I've been exploring semi-retiring outside the US w/in the next 5-10 years.

If I was a single guy, I would do it today, but I think it's best that
my kids finish school state-side before I move off-shore.

Here are the places I've been reading about and considering
(in no special order):

1. Mexico (Baja, Ajijic, Lake Chapala, Le Paz...)
2. Panama
3. Thailand
4. Nicaragua
5. South America (Argentina, Uruguay)
6. Philippines
7. Costa Rica
8. Belize

Any comments/suggestions would be appreciated... Obviously I would need
to spend some time in desired spots before permanently moving.

I like close access to the beach. My wife would need some semblance
of security, so the recent crime problems mentioned in Belize would be
dissuasive.

I would consider any country with less crime and where you do not stick out like a sore thumb.

Cut my cost of living in half.

You could probably do that in the States. Depends what your costs are, really.

I don't know why everyone assumes it cheap to live overseas. Almost everything here is more expensive. Cheaper items are: hookers, booze, cocaine, taxes, domestic staff, healthcare and housing -- and the last one is debatable.

out of curiousity why is turkey not an option? I haven't been myself but all I hear is how amazing that country is, not so much hooker blow heavy but quality of life, cheap, antalya bodrum both look sick and you're a short flight away from a bunch of other amazing countries.

Of the countries on your list I can speak about Mexico and Uruguay, and Mexicos merely week all inclusives so not a whole lot to offer but I did a school semester in Uruguay and a more boring country you will not find. It is quiet and safe and Punta Del Este is beautiful in season but off season completely dead so living there year round isn't really a viable option. I did a side trip into Argentina albeit just 3 days but I had more fun there in 3 days then I did in Montevideo over 3 months. Uruguay also is not a cheap country, it's not quite Chile expensive but it's up there, you can do better with your buck in South America. Argentina was amazing, I wasnt there long enough to work out living expenses etc but having fun was cheap and if its on the cheapest countries list I would say in your spot id consider it

My cousin did a couple projects in the Phillipines and he raved about the place, cheap food cheap booze wild nightlife. Said you have to stick to certain areas cause it can get sketchy but he told me its a must visit, might be worth researching a bit more.

Thanks for the input. I'm not interested in Turkey, because it is 99%
Sunni Muslim. Some good friends of ours have spent time in Buenos
Aires - I do want to check that out.

Let me know what you find. I think I have plenty for here but you never know.

The republicans might get back in.

Asshole always has to turn everything into Bush/Repub bashing.

Take that shit out of my thread.

LOS ANGELES, April 21 (Reuters) - A group backed by hedge fund Harbinger Capital Partners plans to open in early 2013 Vietnam's first Las Vegas-style casino resort in a coastal area to be called the Ho Tram Strip.
Asian Coast Development Ltd said on Wednesday that it had named Lloyd Nathan, formerly president of MGM Mirage's (MGM.N) global gaming development, as its chief executive officer, a post from which he will oversee the project's financing and construction.

Those that mentioned living in the U.S., I agree.

There are many very affordable places: Tennesse & Nevada (no state income taxes), many parts of Florida (including along the coast - Jacksonville Beaches, St. Augustine, Flagler Beach/Palm Coast all the way down to Melbourne - Plus no state income tax), Texas (no state income tax), North & South Carolina, Southern Virginia.

I will retire w/ a military pension...and ID. I hope to live near: a base (for shopping and use of facilities; golf, gym, MWR, etc), a college (usually cheap eats/shopping due to students) and hopefully near water/mountains. For me, the northern Nevada area is ideal (not in Reno, but nearby)....

Outside of the states? Switzerland, France, or Costa Rica....

What are you going to do for income w/out the restaurant?

Are US citizens allowed to buy real estate in Costa Rica?
