The behind the scenes clowns at ESPN lead their Sports Center with a game 1 of an NBA semifinal (Boston - Cleveland) conference game over the Kentucky Derby.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the Kentucky Derby one of the worlds premier sporting event?

Any newsman worth his weight is salt would tell you the Kentucky Derby is your lead sports story, especially over a game 1 semifinal conference game, and it's not even close, as a matter of fact, the Mayweather - Mosely fight may be more of a lead story than Cav's - Celtics

espn covers basketball thats why they put that on, they would put a regular season nba game leading off rather than a game 7 of the stanley cup. its a joke

Kentucky Derby is way overrated IMO.

i agree,

The derby is garbage anymore. It's just an excuse for women to wear those stupid big hats.. And the pregame coverage is way to long.. Just race the damn horses..

ESPN was right to lead in the celts/cavs, much better event, thank you espn

I agree, just can't stand the inconsistent and simply awful officiating. Those guys are impact players, and once they get hot, they don't stop. LOL

I just enjoyed Ray & Caron play. If Ray gets eliminated, the NBA season is over for me.

if they played Game 1 of BOS-CLE in a 100,000-seat arena, would it sell-out?

well, if they played games for 7 hours, once a years and you can gamble on it, maybe.

BTW: I think the derby is bigger than game 1 of that series, and I hate the NBA, but I don't like the argument you made.

Back in the day, when ESPN had the NHL contract...they would lead with it...remember, they are owned by ABC.....when ABC lost the Derby to NBC....they stopped leading with it.....if ESPN doesnt have the contract, they won't lead with it....They're weird...they pick and choose whats newsworthy....hell, remember, when Ben Rothlisburger got in trouble the first time? They wouldnt even acknowledge it......not only should they have acknowledged it, but it should have been the lead story....but they will send Pedro Gomez to follow Barry Bonds every move and tell me what he shit out and the type of toilet paper he used, while denying steriods and setting a phony homerun record....acting like its a big deal....when polls were taken, and nobody cared about it...but if espn shoves it down your throat, it becomes a story, because THEY said its a story....They say the NBA is so much better than the NHL, well its only because its on that network....look at stands during the regular season...they are half empty in arends not named LA...Boston...Cleveland...and Utah....The NHL fan support is very strong....during the playoffs every arena is sold out...maybe it is just not tv friendly....thats a different topic all together...my point is, if ESPN showed hockey and lead with it...people would watch it....sadly as this is, ESPN is king...they just have a huge influence on sports and what people watch...

OK...I'll correct you.

The Kentucky Derby USED TO BE one of the world's premier sporting events. Horse racing, in general, and the Kentucky Derby, in particular, are niche sports/sporting events today. Sorry, that's just the way it is...

Very much like boxing USED TO BE one of the top sports. Neither holds the position today that they did 40-50 years ago.

Now, if you wanted to lead Sports Center with the Derby out of paying homage to "the way things used to be"/nostalgia, I have no particular problem with that.

But horse racing like boxing both are off the radar for the average American sports fan...

Young males who like to spend money (ESPN's number 1 target audience) don't give a damn about hockey or horse racing; they would rather see LeBron warm up than the stretch run of the derby or a hockey playoff game. ESPN goes where the bucks are; simple as that.
