Was noticing the times at the derby yesterday and checking for past posters and couldn't believe the difference in times between the 10th and the derby yesterday. Most all of the races were running from 40 to 50 minutes apart and then all of a sudden goes to almost an hour and 50 minutes. What was the reason for this. had to leave and got back just in time for the race. Were they waiting for the rain to stop or did they mention a reason./:howdy:

This has been standard practice for some years now regarding the Kentucky Derby. The extra time allows all the other tracks to synchronize their racing programs, so that the Derby is generally the only race being run at that time and generate more betting dollars at the windows across the country. There is more then an hour between the race before the Derby and the Run For The Roses. Yesterday, the 10th race went off at 4:49 p.m. EDT and the Kentucky Derby went off at 6:32 p.m. EDT. The rain had no impact on the starting time of the race.

the 91 min to post was a bit extreme

also the 155,000 announced attendance..whow talk about a random number..there was many less people than the past 10 derbies Ive been to. traffic, lines, moving around, gettting in, space was much less...

i noticed it also, and think its an xtremely bad idea. the derby is the showcase for horse racing, so instead of showing racing they allow the network to show endless features on hats and celebrity nonsense. the handle would increase on races held right before the derby not decrease the derby handle, so that is also not a logical reason.

i agree its a little excessive but this is the only time to really showcase horse racing so i like that they draw it out a little...

Churchill loves the way NBC is covering the Derby. They really like the cross promotion with the Today show. It's a way to get racing more into the mainstream.
