Most Mexicans don't know what it is, for crying out loud !

How did this "holiday" happen ?

Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May") is a holiday celebrated in the United States and primarily limited to the state of Puebla in Mexico.[1][2] The holiday commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín.[3][4]

Any reason to party is good enough for me. Mexican Americans like to party on that date so why not join them??

You don't need Mexicans in Mexico to celebrate it. I think St. Patrick's Day is bigger in the US than in Ireland so why fight it?

why do you care so much, Doug??

gotta take the wife to a Mexican restaurant , I guess....I find it hilarious that the ( Mexican) owner of a Mexican restaurant can't explain May 5th to me. Kind of like, I don't know, it's not Mexican July 4th ( as many think)....I don't know, they come and drink and eat.

Somehow it has become an American holiday, of sorts, but nobody really knows why ! I find it quite ironic ( made entirely of iron).

Mexico was fighting France in 1862 ? That sounds weird, I'm guessing Mexico didn't go to France, so the other way around, what was this about ?

What were they warring about ?

I need to brush up on my world history, I guess ?

it's an obscure holiday in mexican history, they don't really celebrate it

in the US, it was conjured up by the beer companies as a marketing campaign

Yeah, Corona day !

Sheet, I have enough BS holidays to deal with already, don't need fake Mexican ones !

I doubt that is the norm !

Kind of like asking an American what happened on about 6 am Sunday 12/7/1941

Best you could hope for is....The Germans bombed Pearl Harbor.

Cinco De Mayo is on Wednesday this week. Cinco De Mayo is a holiday that is celebrated in Mexico and the United States. Recently, I have noticed that there are a lot of US celebrations of Cinco De Mayo due to the blending of our cultures especially in States that are near Mexico and have many people who have Mexican ancestry living in them.

Cinco De Mayo is a celebration of the French leaving Mexico after the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848. It is a holiday celebrating The Battle of Pueblo. On May 5, 1862 Mexican forces under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin defeated the better equipped French forces who had not been beaten in the previous 50 years. Although the holiday is much less important than Mexican Independence Day which is September 18, it is still a great celebration especially in the US.
