I think this is the Hardest Question in Sports......

Ali was Up there as well.......I Believe , was it SI ? or Time magazine that Voted him Best of All time ??

are you talking about athletes or competitors, because there is a huge difference? guys like lebron and dwight are incredible athletes, but probably not the greatest of all time (yet)

in my opinion you have to look at either a running back or safety. those positions more then any other in sports require the perfect combination of strength and speed.

Agree with seanjohn there is a difference.

I believe Jordan is best overall as a a combination of competitor + athlete.

Usually I would say best athlete would be a basketball player because usually if you can play bball you can play any other sport.

But, I think Bo Jackson COULD have been the best ATHLETE ever.

I saw him play basketball in one of those competitions and he was just as smooth doing that as he was running over & around people on the football field with that 4.1 speed & power.....

I always go back and forth between sanders and jackson... it's so tough cause many athletes have tons of potential and never realize it (basketball players who choose football kinda thing).

There Wasn't Anything Sanders Could Do That

Bo could not. But because of his size & strength there was a lot Bo could do that no one else could. Their speed was close to equal. The best white HS athlete? Joe Mauer, the ONLY 2 time Gatorade POY in foots. We know what he can do in bases. Star on a state championship Hoops team. He & Dave Winfield the greatest ever to come out of MN.!<><>

How is Dave Winfield not mentioned?? He is the only person to be drafted in first round of 3 professional sports. MLB, NBA (and ABA) and NFL...drafted in first round of NFL without ever playing a down in college

So long as we're making shit up, Michael Jordan hit 50 homeruns in MLB and won the Master's

Dave Winfield never even played college football and was drafted well past where it would end today; he was a bench player in college basketball and again, drafted past where it would end today. Although easily one of the 10 best rightfielders in baseball history, his draft status is more a quirk of the 1970s drafting, rather than a statement of him being a good athlete

To be considered the very best athlete in the entire history of human sports, being among the absolute very best in at least one sport should be given much more credit than being mediocre at a second sport. Deion Sanders is outside of the top 20 football players in history, cannot see how a few stolen bases with the Braves and Reds move him above those 20 other NFL players like Montana. Has Melky Cabrera and Darelle Revis combined to contribute more to their teams than Peyton Manning and Albert Pujols have alone to theirs?

Micheal Jordan is a reasonable choice. I might take Wilt Chamberlain for being among the top five basketball players and he did much better at volleyball and track-and-field than Jordan did at baseball and golf. Jim Brown did even better with lacrosse and track-and-field. He might be my choice
