There is nothing like it. Best thing to do imho.
I'll take freshwater fishing for anything, but Deep Sea - nothing compares.
I'm more of a grouper digger than going after the man in the blue suit since I'm a meat fisherman and want to eat what I catch, so I focus on Mangrove, Mutton, Lane, Yellowtail and the ocassional True American Red Snapper and then Red/Gag/Black Grouper. Thrown in a Kingfish to smoke and it can be one hell of a trip.
I go off of Fort Myers Beach with an old commercial captain that now does 6-pack charters. He can be ornery but damn he'll put you on fish.
Best trip to date was an two night trip, where we left at 4pm on a Friday and started fishing around 2am Saturday AM the first night then kept fishing almost non-stop until Sunday afternoon - getting back to the docks around 5pm Sunday night. After filleting, ended up taking home over 100 lbs of fresh fish. I had fish for the next 3 months since I vacuum sealed the majority of it (gave a ton away to family as well).
Trip cost me around $800, so total talley was around 80 cents a pound. Buying that at Wegmans around here would cost me around 15 dollars a pound - if they even have it.
There's nothing like the feeling of thinking you've got a snag and then realize it's not a snag, and the mate starts yelling at you to get yourself strapped in (fishing belt, harness, etc) then you get strapped into the boat itself so you don't get pulled overboard. Your muscles take a pounding but it's so damn satisfying.
You guys are really missing the boat on fishing if you don't do it - especially deep sea.
