76ers interview Laimbeer, Mitchell

PHILADELPHIA -- Former Detroit player Bill Laimbeer and former Toronto coach Sam Mitchell met with the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday in Dallas to discuss the team's vacant coaching job.

"We want to speak to as many qualified candidates as possible and certainly Bill Laimbeer's credentials as a player and success as a coach -- including three championships in six seasons in the WNBA -- speaks for itself," general manager Ed Stefanski said. "We want to thank Bill for meeting with us."

Mitchell coached the Raptors for four full seasons and was the NBA coach of the year in 2006-07. He was fired 17 games into the 2008-09 season.
"Sam has been a successful head coach in the league, having been named coach of the year in 2007, and we were very interested in speaking with him," Stefanski said. "It was good to sit down with him to exchange ideas about our team and this opportunity."

Phoenix Suns assistant coach Dan Majerle is another candidate to be targeted in the 76ers' search, NBA coaching sources told ESPN.com's Marc Stein.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Sixers, after receiving permission from the Suns to speak with Majerle, are sending a delegation to meet him in Phoenix on Monday after Game 4 in the Suns-Spurs series.

The Sixers also have an interview scheduled Monday with Portland Trail Blazers assistant coach Monty Williams.

The 76ers also have talked to Avery Johnson and Doug Collins. They fired Eddie Jordan last month after the team went 27-55 in his lone season.

You would have thought that Bill Laimbeer would have been a coach already, but apparently he must not have something that impresses owners or general managers...

I wasn't impressed with Laimbeer when he was miced up in the wnba. Sounded like a dope who just provided energy without any x's or o's.

Philly should get avery, the total opposite of jordan in terms of enforcing discipline and team rules.
