I recommend getting the wii play and wii sports to get started, they come with extra remotes which you will need if you have any friends because the wii will get played when you have people over (unlike some systems that rely heavily upon FPS titles).
definately buy Mario Galaxy and the New Super Mario Bros game as well if you are a fan of the franchise in any form they are two of the best mario titles to date.

Wii Sports will do you until you can't move your arms anymore. That crap gave me tennis elbow. Mario Cart is the best game by far. Other than Wii Sports. Target has some good packaged games where you get 9 games on one cd for like $20. I think the ones we have are called like Wii party games and Carnival games. I have a hunting and fishing game but they are pretty hard to get the hang of atleast for my old ass self anyway.
You can stream video from your PC using the Wii Browser to an internal IP address... for what it's worth, I haven't tried it yet.
