• A road start against the Rangers may look like a red flag for Gio Gonzalez, but don't be so worried. The Rangers are 10th in home OPS, true, but they are flat-out awful against left-handers, ranking 27th in the majors. Gonzalez has done a great job of limiting his home runs, too, which is important considering how many batters he walks. It's a little bit higher variance than you would like, because Gonzalez can still be prone to inconsistency, but the strikeouts are real and the matchup is favorable, so what more can you ask for?
• How improbable was it coming into the season that we would have Gonzalez and Carl Pavano all near the top of the rankings? Like the first two hurlers, Pavano has been quietly consistent, pitching exceptionally well in all but one start. Pavano has caused so many nightmares for owners over the years that people are still gun-shy, but by the numbers it's hard to see why. Residence in the AL Central can do wonders for him, and indeed, he has a very good track record against the White Sox with the team hitting just .236 off him in 123 at-bats. Remember guys, matchups are everything.
• Call me a fool, but I'm still high on Wandy Rodriguez, as most of his problems are due to a ridiculously inflated .387 batting average on balls in play. He has a solid 19-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio in his past four starts (23 innings), has had success against the Cards (3.72 ERA and 0.97 WHIP in five starts last season, including a 2.65 ERA and 0.88 WHIP in three starts at Busch Stadium) and the Red Birds just aren't good against left-handed pitching (.657 OPS, 22nd). It's a mistake to be too results-oriented and bench Rodriguez while you wait for him to get back on track; instead, you want him to get back on track in your starting lineup, where he can balance out some of the damage he's caused.
• I don't care how well John Danks is pitching, when the numbers are this one-sided against a pitcher, you have to sit down and listen. The Twins as a team have a .306 AVG/.383 OBP/.502 SLG line off Danks, and because they are division foes they have racked up 229 at-bats against him, not exactly an insignificant total. Almost every key hitter in the lineup rakes versus Danks, including their vicious middle of the order. It's true that Danks owned the Twins in their first meeting, but it's also true that Danks posted a 5.17 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in five starts against the team last year and happened to miss Joe Mauer the first time around this year. Then you throw in the fact that it's a road start and it's a question of if you really want to risk your ratios based on the allure of Danks' to-date performance. Personally I have no qualms in benching a pitcher with a sub-2.00 ERA if that's what the matchups dictate I should do.
• It's a shame when a good pitcher has a tough matchup, because you might talk yourself into starting him when you shouldn't. There are very few starters I would feel comfortable starting in Fenway Park, and Shaun Marcum is not one of them. He doesn't strike out enough batters (6.75 K/9) to make it worth the risk, and his BABIP (.248) suggests he's been a bit lucky, too. Have no shame in leaving him on your bench this time around.
• Is Derek Lowe done? That's the question you have to ask yourself when a 36-year-old can't strike out anyone -- not that he ever could -- and keeps getting pounded. Worse is the fact that he's walking four and a half batters per nine innings, a rate he just can't survive with. Maybe he turns it around, but if he does, it probably won't happen on your team; cut bait if you haven't already.

Reds: Bailey is coming off one of his poorer outings of the season -- a 14-7 Reds loss to the Cubs on Friday. In his four-plus innings, he was charged with seven earned runs with five hits and five walks. In that short amount of time, he threw 94 pitches. Bailey did a pretty good job of throwing strike one but lacked finishing pitches and couldn't get the outs. "I just couldn't put them away," Bailey said. "Before you know it, you're 3-2."Pirates: Duke's last start was marred by two errors behind him, which led to three unearned runs. Those would be the only runs that would score while Duke was on the mound in his 6 1/3-inning performance. Duke struck out a season-high seven and even kept nemesis Albert Pujols off the bases. Though Duke wasn't rewarded with a win, it was a step forward for the left-hander, who hadn't pitched into the seventh since April 16. Duke rediscovered his fastball command and did a much better job of executing his sinker. Duke allowed one run in seven innings against the Reds back in April. He is 3-6 with a 4.04 ERA in 11 career starts against Cincinnati.

Yankees: Vazquez will get another chance to figure out his issues as the Yankees continue their four-game series at Comerica Park. The Yankees pushed Vazquez back so he'd miss a start against the Red Sox in Boston, giving him time to throw two vigorous bullpen sessions and work on his mechanics. Something has to change -- he was raked by the White Sox for five runs in three-plus innings on May 1 and the innings-eater hasn't completed the sixth in any of his starts. Vazquez is 6-7 with a 4.50 ERA in 13 career starts vs. Detroit, but has not faced them since 2008.Tigers: Porcello has lost three of his last four starts, giving up fewer than five earned runs just once in those outings. Most recently, he allowed five runs, three earned, in a loss to the Twins, giving up five hits and four walks over 5 1/3 innings, striking out three. The right-hander is at his best at Comerica Park this season. Both of his wins have come on the Tigers' home field, against the Angels and Indians. Porcello has faced the Yankees just once, giving up six runs on six hits and three walks. Porcello lasted just 3 2/3 that day, striking out one.

Braves: Lowe certainly looked distressed after allowing the Phillies seven runs and 11 hits in five innings on Friday. The veteran right-hander entered this season with the hope that his offseason adjustments would allow him to avoid the frustration he experienced during the latter portion of the 2009 season. But his stats through the first seven starts of this year look very similar to the ones he posted during his last nine outings last year. Opponents have compiled a .293 batting average and .371 on-base percentage against him. He is 3-1 with a 3.25 ERA in seven career starts against the Brewers.Brewers: If it's a sunny afternoon and the shadows are in play at Miller Park for this game, Gallardo could be very tough. He has reached double-digit strikeouts in three of his last four starts -- the first Brewers pitcher ever to do so -- and has won all four of those outings, most recently a 3-2 win in Arizona on Friday in which Gallardo struck out 10 batters in five innings. The Braves, of course, were the Brewers' opponent on a sunny day in May 2004, when Ben Sheets used a glare-aided curveball to notch 18 strikeouts, a franchise record.

White Sox: Danks will hope for a little more run support in his next trip to the hill, as he gave up two runs over seven innings on Thursday against Toronto, only to get the hard-luck loss when the offense was shut out. Six starts into the season, Danks has turned in five quality starts and has not allowed more than two earned runs in any of his six starts. Danks' first start of the campaign was against the Twins, as he went six innings and gave up two runs -- one of them earned. That got him a no-decision. The southpaw is 4-5 lifetime against the Twins with a 5.13 ERA. Even though Danks has started against the Twins more frequently than any other team in his career, this is his first start in the brand-new Target Field.Twins: Pavano suffered some tough luck in his last start against Baltimore last Thursday. The Twins veteran right-hander pitched eight solid innings and gave up just two runs, while striking out eight Orioles batters. Pavano's lone mistake of the outing was a hanging breaking ball that went for a two-run homer in the 2-0 loss. Pavano yielded six hits and three walks in throwing 97 pitches against Baltimore. Since the Twins had an off-day Monday, Pavano should be well rested pitching on five days' rest when Minnesota welcomes the Chicago White Sox to Target Field.

Blue Jays: Marcum contributed his fourth straight quality start for the Blue Jays on Friday against the White Sox but once again failed to earn a victory, as the club staged a late extra-innings rally to win, 7-4. The right-hander went 7 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits without issuing a walk. He did however, double his season's home run total as both Mark Kotsay and Alex Rios went deep. Aside from the two home runs, it was vintage Marcum, who was economical with his pitches, utilizing his outstanding changeup to keep hitters off balance. Marcum has been fantastic against the Red Sox throughout his career, showcasing a 4-2 record with a 3.33 ERA over 48 2/3 innings. Red Sox: Wakefield's last start was April 25 against Baltimore, after which he was subsequently moved to the bullpen to make room in the rotation for Daisuke Matsuzaka. On May 1, Wakefield made his first relief appearance since June 9, 2004, throwing 2 1/3 innings in the Red Sox's 12-9 loss in Baltimore. Between relief appearances he had made 162 starts. As a starter this season, Wakefield is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA. Part of the problem was a long fifth inning in which he faced eight batters and gave up four runs. Silva served up 10 hits over five innings and walked one. The good news is that his right wrist seems to be fine after he tweaked it during an at-bat in New York.

Phillies: Following Tuesday's rainout, Halladay is expected to start the first game of Wednesday's day-night twin bill. He'll be pitching at Coors Field in Denver for the first time in his career. That is noteworthy because Coors can be a difficult place to pitch, but also because Halladay grew up in Colorado. If Ubaldo Jimenez can pitch successfully in Colorado, why can't Halladay?Rockies: Cook seemed to be in control of Wednesday's game against the Padres until giving up four runs in the fourth inning. For most of his time on the mound, he was forcing weak contact and getting ground balls. However, he elevated three key pitches, and those were the hits that drove in four runs. Manager Jim Tracy acknowledged after the game that Cook has been inconsistent, but he expects him to go on one of his patented streaks of success at some point.

Coming off their most anemic night of the season, the Pirates can only hope for more offense. Pittsburgh was held to just one hit and one baserunner on Tuesday night and will attempt to rebound in Wednesday's series finale against Cincinnati. The Pirates are 2-15 this season when their opponent scores first, and they've also managed a 3-16 mark when scoring less than four runs. By contrast, Pittsburgh has been fairly competitive when its offense is a factor. The Pirates are 11-2 when they score at least four runs and 11-0 when leading after four innings, twin facts not lost on their coaching staff. Pittsburgh has scored just 28 runs in its eight-game homestand, and manager John Russell knows that it's not enough to stay afloat.

Duke, Pittsburgh's Opening Day starter, has endured an erratic beginning to his 2010 campaign. The left-hander logged a 2-0 record and a 2.37 ERA in his first three starts, but then he turned around and posted an 0-3 record and a 7.59 mark across his last four outings. Duke hasn't won since his second start of the year, and he's already had a no-decision against the Reds.

Derek Lowe will look to bounce back from his worst start of the season, in which he allowed seven runs on 11 hits in five innings in Philadelphia last Friday. After winning his first three starts, Lowe has lost three of his past four and hasn't completed six innings since April 10 in San Francisco. The 11 hits Lowe surrendered to the Phillies were a season high and tied the most he'd given up as a member of the Braves.

Yovani Gallardo takes the hill on Wednesday aiming for his fifth win in as many starts. Gallardo has been Milwaukee's ace thus far, leading the team in wins, ERA and strikeouts. He has risen to third in the National League in punchouts, having struck out at least 10 batters in three of his past four starts -- a first in Brewers history. Gallardo was able to strike out 10 D-backs in his last start despite lasting only five innings. He hopes to go deeper into the game this time around.

John Danks had another solid outing on Thursday but was handed his first loss of the season. He pitched seven innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits and two walks, while fanning seven. He fell to 3-1 on the season. Danks hasn't given up more than two earned runs in any of his six starts, three times yielding only a single score.

Carl Pavano lost his second straight eight-inning, two-run performance on Thursday. He went right at the free-swinging Orioles, throwing 70 of 97 pitches for strikes but was burnt by Ty Wigginton's two-run homer in the second inning. Pavano scattered six hits, struck out eight and walked three while earning his third loss of the season. Pavano induced three double plays. He pitched with a full week of a rest, due to a stiff neck and a slight rotation shuffle. He was worried about his range of motion following his last start, but said he felt fine after the game

Tim Wakefield (0-1, 6.03 ERA), who has spent the last few weeks in the bullpen, will replace him. The 43-year-old knuckleballer started the season in the rotation but lost his spot when Matsuzaka returned from the disabled list.

Wakefield wouldn't comment on being relegated to a relief role, but Red Sox manager Terry Francona seemed to anticipate he'd be needed again.

One problem for Wakefield has been the inability to slow down baserunners. Opponents have stolen 11 bases in his 31 1-3 innings without being caught.

Wakefield has allowed 11 runs in 7 2-3 innings while losing his last two starts against Toronto, but he's still 10-6 with a 3.66 ERA against the Blue Jays since the start of 2004.

Shaun Marcum (1-1, 3.19), who is off to an impressive start in a return from Tommy John surgery.

Marcum has six quality starts in seven outings, holding opponents to a .219 average. He limited Boston to one run in seven innings of a game the Blue Jays lost 2-1 on April 27.

The right-hander did not get a decision Friday at Chicago, but held the White Sox to three runs and did not issue a walk in 7 2-3 innings of Toronto's 7-4 win.

Silva hasn't pitched very well in his last couple of outings dealing with some soreness in his neck and right shoulder prior to his start on Friday night, was feeling better Saturday . He also had some wrist issues earlier this month, so hopefully he's not breaking down already this season.

Volstad improved to 3-2 this season by holding the Nationals to two runs in seven innings. He struck out four and walked two.
Ever since his seven-run implosion at Coors Field late last month, Volstad has been tough, allowing just three runs in 16 innings (all against the Nationals). Aside from that one poor start, he's earned a quality start every time out.
