Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Mets at Florida Marlins (-200, 8.5)

After coming up with only eight hits and three runs in the first two games of the series against Florida, the Mets are altering their lineup…again.

Twenty games ago manager Jerry Manuel moved Jose Reyes from the leadoff spot to No. 3 in the batting order. He also dropped David Wright behind Jason Bay so his slugger could see more fastballs.

The lineup changes didn’t spark the offense and New York has scored double-digit runs only once this year.

On Saturday, Manuel moved Reyes back to the leadoff spot and Angel Pagan to the three-hole. Bay remained batting cleanup but Manuel hinted that he could be dropped from that position if he continues to struggle (1 HR, .265 average) while catcher Rod Barajas could be moved from the No. 8 spot to "a more prominent spot" in the order.

Mets’ hitters have to be pressing right now and the comfort of not knowing where you will be on the scorecard every night isn’t there.

Jonathon Niese has held opposing lineups to one run or less in three of his last five starts. The Mets righty last faced Florida on April 8 and surrendered three runs in a 3-1 loss.

Marlins starter Ricky Nolasco gave up three earned runs in his last start against the Mets on April 7 and should be able to keep New York’s hitters off-balance again Sunday.

Pick: Under

Washington Nationals at Colorado Rockies (-145, 9.5)

Colorado pitchers have been injury-plagued this season, but the team returned starter Jason Hammel on Saturday and get another rotation member back Sunday.

Jeff Francis will be making his first start since Sept. 12, 2008 after missing all of last season coming off shoulder surgery. The southpaw won 17 games in 2007 for this Rockies club and expects to return to form immediately.

"It's not going to feel real until I actually step onto the mound," Francis said. "And once that happens, I expect to pitch well, go deep into the game and help the team win."

Francis was scheduled to make his return debut on April 6 of this season but a sore left armpit just four days before that start shelved him for more than a month.

Despite what his intentions are, Francis will likely be on a tight pitch count in his first game back.

Scott Olsen hasn’t given up more than two earned runs in his last four starts and the Nats went 3-1 in those outings.

Washington has been stroking the ball well and undervalued by oddsmakers as of late. The club is 7-3 in its last 10 outings (+6.70 units) with every win coming as an underdog.

Pick: Nationals

Sunday Night Baseball: Phillies at Brewers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Phillies at Milwaukee Brewers (+125, 10)

The Phillies and Brewers put the wraps on their three-game series Sunday night when Cole Hamels opposes Doug Davis in a battle of southpaws at Miller Park on ESPN. Let’s see how they matchup.

Go figure

Phils' first baseman Ryan Howard entered the series in the midst of a nine-game home run drought before finally homering Friday night. Earlier this season, Howard went 15 straight games (65 plate appearances) without a home run.

Although suffering from the prolonged power slump, Howard actually saw his batting average jump from .280 to .290 in that span.

Exxon Valdez

With All-Star shortstop Jimmy Rollins on the DL and his backup, Juan Castro, out with a strained knee, the Phillies turned to Wilson Valdez to fill the gap.

Valdez has performed admirably in the field. But entering this series, his bat is leaking oil and has more holes than the Exxon Valdez. He was hitting .152 while managing to ground into five rally-killing double plays last week alone.

Castro is listed day-to-day.

Out on a Lidge

Philadelphia closer Brad Lidge left the team Wednesday in Denver and flew back to Philadelphia to have his sore elbow checked by a team physician.

The results brought good news to the injury-riddled Phillies. The MRI showed no structural damage or loose bodies in the elbow. The tests also showed that the surgery Lidge had on his elbow in November is healing properly.

But then the Phillies promptly put their closer on the 15-day disabled lest, retroactive May 10.

Until Lidge comes off the DL, the Phillies will go to a closer-by-committee approach with the back of their bullpen.

Ryan Madson served as the team's closer in April the first time Lidge was on the DL. But Madson had surgery on his right big toe last week and isn't expected to return until July.

The Phillies may turn to veteran Jose Contreras. The righthander is 2-1 with an 0.77 ERA and a 15-to-1 strikeouts-to-walks ratio in 11 2/3 innings of work this season.

"We just have to play with it and see where we're at," manager Charlie Manuel said. "We'll get by."

Arm shortage

Like the Phillies, the Brewers’ bullpen is running on fumes.

Milwaukee’s starting rotation is averaging less than six innings per start and, as a result, the bullpen is getting exhausted filling in the remaining innings.

After three rough days against Atlanta, manager Ken Macha admitted the problem extends beyond just one or two relievers.

RHP Carlos Villanueva saw his ERA soar from 0.51 to 3.26 in two relief appearances on consecutive days against the Braves. Villanueva allowed six runs in 1 2/3 innings in those outings.

"It's been a little bit of an epidemic throughout the (Braves) series,” said Macha,

"It's not just one or two guys. It's everybody out there."

Where’s the beef?

Brewers' first baseman Prince Fielder, who ranked second in the NL with a .602 slugging percentage in 2009, has not been able to find his power stroke this season.

Entering this series, Fielder had only nine extra-base hits (five doubles, four homers) in 130 at-bats and has a .385 slugging percentage.

The good news is Ryan Braun returned to the Milwaukee lineup Friday night. He missed the last two games of the Atlanta series after being hit on the left elbow on a pitch from Tommy Hanson.

Armed to the max

Philadelphia lefthander Hamels enters tonight game at 3-2 with a 4.53 ERA. In his last three starts he has mowed down 23 hitters in 19 innings of work.

Hamels is 3-4 in his seven career team starts in this series, including 0-3 as a visitor with a 5.75 ERA.

Milwaukee southpaw Davis has struggled since coming over from Arizona this season. He walked six and surrendered a grand slam on Monday against the Brewers. The lefty went 5 2/3 innings, allowing six runs on three hits while striking out four. Davis took the loss, dropping to 1-4 with a 7.56 ERA.

Davis is 4-4 in his career team starts against the Phillies, including 3-1 at home with a 2.71 ERA.

Chew on this

After Friday’s 9-5 setback, Milwaukee fell to 4-12 at home, its worst start ever at Miller Park.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On May 16 in Baseball History...

1902 - Two deaf-mutes face each other for the first time when Dummy Hoy leads off for the Reds against Dummy Taylor of the Giants. The Reds win 5-3 with a five-run rally in the ninth. Hoy goes 2-for-4.

1932 - The Yankees score their fourth straight shutout to equal the record set by Cleveland (1903) and Boston (1906). Johnny Allen, George Pipgras, Red Ruffing, and Lefty Gomez are the hurlers.

1939 - The first A.L. night game is played at Shibe Park, with Cleveland beating the host Philadelphia Athletics 8-3 in ten innings.

1954 - Ted Williams returns to action after breaking his collarbone in spring training and goes 8-for-9 with two home runs and seven RBI in a doubleheader against the Tigers. Williams has three hits in game one, a 7-6 loss. He goes five-for-five in the nightcap, including two home runs, but Boston loses 9-8 in 14 innings.

1957 - The Yankees celebrate Billy Martin's 29th birthday in a raucous fashion. An ensuing fight at Manhattan's Copacabana Club leads to $5,500 in fines and the eventual trade of Billy to Kansas City. Hank Bauer allegedly starts the fight by hitting a patron, although Bauer denies it.

1967 - Philadelphia voters approve a $13 million bond issue to build a new stadium.

1979 - N.L. owners approve the sale of the Astros from the Ford Motor Credit Company to John J. McMullen for a reported $19 million.

1984 - The Twins sell 51,863 tickets to their 8-7 loss to the Blue Jays, but only 6,346 fans show up for the game. The skewed numbers are the result of a massive ticket buyout plan organized by Minneapolis businessman Harvey Mackay to keep the Twins in Minnesota; if the club does not sell 2.41 million tickets this season it can break its lease with the Metrodome. Taking advantage of reduced prices on the Family Day promotion, Mackay pays $218,718 for 44,166 tickets.

1987 - After starting off with an 18-2 record, the 1987 Milwaukee Brewers drop their tenth in a row, losing 13-0 to Kansas City, and earning the nickname Team Streak. The Brew Crew's only hit off Charlie Leibrandt is a bunt single.

1997 - Jim Leyland returns to Pittsburgh for the first time wearing a uniform other than that of the Pirates. Leyland, who spent 11 seasons as skipper in Pittsburgh, sees his new team, the Marlins, beat the Pirates, 3-1. Two days later he leaves town with Florida's first-ever sweep in Pittsburgh.
