Selected notes:
• Despite three straight quality starts and an above-average strikeout rate, Ian Kennedy is getting no love in fantasy leagues. Sure, he allows too many homers, but he's shown improvement, with only three allowed in his past 28 innings. He shouldn't have a problem picking up his fourth straight quality start against the scuffling San Francisco Giants.
• At this point in his career, Rich Harden is a matchups starter, as getting pasted by the underrated Toronto Blue Jays offense in his last outing proved. Fortunately the Baltimore Orioles don't pack nearly the punch of the Blue Jays; they're second-to-last in OPS against right-handers. Harden is as capable of dominating light-hitting teams as he is of getting lit up by strong ones, so don't let his last putrid performance tempt you into benching him this time around.
A.J. Burnett's inconsistency is especially annoying because he can dominate good offenses while getting lit up by poor ones. So even though he's allowed 10 earned runs in his past two starts (11 innings), it's tough to bench him versus the Tampa Bay Rays. Last year, he had his way with the Rays, posting a 1.97 ERA and 0.97 WHIP in five starts. It's tough to argue with that, so despite recent evidence to the contrary, stick with him.
Aaron Harang is quietly turning around his season, logging at least six innings in four consecutive starts while totaling 26 strikeouts and 11 earned runs. He's faced the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals in three of those four starts too, so he's not exactly performing well against cupcake opponents. Those in need of strikeouts should take a long look at Harang when he faces the Atlanta Braves.
• Despite a ridiculously bloated WHIP (1.82), it's hard for me to give up on Justin Masterson. He's striking out more than 10 batters per nine innings while inducing ground balls 60 percent of the time, a masterful combination no other starter in the major leagues has accomplished (save the injured Jorge De La Rosa). So why has he been knocked around so much? Well, his batting average on balls in play is floating at an extreme .404, so stick around and your faith may well be rewarded. And how can you say no to a home matchup versus the Kansas City Royals?
Clay Buchholz has faced a number of tough offenses this season, but it doesn't get any easier when he draws the Minnesota Twins. They rank second in the majors in on-base percentage, and Buchholz's middling peripherals (a 10-15 strikeout-to-walk ratio in his past four starts) don't inspire any confidence. It may get worse before it gets better.
• It's unsurprising that Dallas Braden was a bandwagon add after his perfect game, but don't feel as if you have to justify your new pickup by starting him against the Detroit Tigers. He's been a terrible pitcher on the road with a 6.50 ERA and 1.39 WHIP, and had significantly worse stats on the road last season, too. The Tigers are no walk in the park -- they rank fourth in on-base percentage -- and Braden is not an overpowering pitcher, so don't be surprised if he gets knocked around.

Hitters' count:
• Russell Branyan, 1B, Cleveland Indians: The average isn't there and never will be, but you've gotta respect the power. With four home runs since May 11, Branyan is worth taking a chance on, especially when lefties are hitting .338 versus Gil Meche.
• Jeff Francoeur, OF, New York Mets: Why are 34.5 percent of ESPN owners still holding on to Francoeur? Your guess is as good as mine, but while they have him they should at least start him against Livan Hernandez. He's roped six hits off Hernandez in 15 at-bats, four of them going for extra bases, including one home run.
• Adrian Beltre, 3B, Boston Red Sox: Beltre has cooled off recently but has a history of success against Scott Baker, going 7-for-22 (.318) with three doubles and a homer.
• Bobby Abreu, OF, Los Angeles Angels: Abreu is batting below the Mendoza Line against southpaws this season but has crushed John Danks in his career, going 4-for-9 with a pair of homers. He's also picked up six walks, so he could swipe a couple of bases to boot with noodle-armed A.J. Pierzynski behind the plate for the Chicago White Sox.
• Manny Ramirez, OF, Los Angeles Dodgers: Ramirez is still stuck on two homers, but he could change that versus Jon Garland. He just kills Garland, batting .500 in 30 at-bats, including four doubles and three home runs.
Pitchers' count:
• Aramis Ramirez, 3B, Chicago Cubs: Ramirez went deep in his last game, so maybe he's ready to heat up ... but not against Jamie Moyer, whom he's 1-for-11 against lifetime.
• Billy Butler, 1B, Kansas City Royals: While Butler sports an impressive batting average, he has provided little power, and he won't even have the average to stand on against Justin Masterson. He's mustered just a single in 10 career at-bats against his division foe.
• B.J. Upton, OF, Tampa Bay Rays: It's hard to believe that in 37 plate appearances, Upton has yet to pick up an extra-base hit against A.J. Burnett. He's just 6-for-31 (.194), giving him a batting average that matches his slugging percentage, and has fanned a whopping 15 times.
• Nate McLouth, OF, Atlanta Braves: While McLouth does have a double off Aaron Harang, that's about all he's able to say. He's reached base just three times in 23 plate appearances versus Harang, batting .048 and striking out nine times.
• Kendry Morales, 1B, Los Angeles Angels: Morales' OPS drops 342 points against southpaws, and he's 1-for-6 versus John Danks lifetime. Bench him if you have alternatives.
• Adam Jones, OF, Baltimore Orioles: Jones has an awful 31-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio against right-handed pitching in 125 at-bats, so you can expect Rich Harden, who has held right-handers to a .203 average this season, to have a feast.
Baseball Challenge Pick of the Day

Travis Hafner, DH, Cleveland Indians: The great thing about these picks of the day is that you're married to the player you choose for just one day, so why not take advantage of some tasty batter-pitcher matchups? Hafner may look done, but he's actually hitting .283 with three home runs (and a .943 OPS) in 60 at-bats against righties. He's a career .290 hitter against Gil Meche, who's been awful this year, especially against southpaws. A big game for Hafner certainly isn't out of the question.
Triage

Injury list: Out
Asdrubal Cabrera, 2B/SS, Cleveland Indians (15-day DL, arm): Cabrera is expected to undergo surgery on his fractured left forearm. He'll be out for a couple of months.
Mark DeRosa, 3B/OF, San Francisco Giants (15-day DL, wrist): DeRosa plans to be ready when he's eligible to be activated next Tuesday.
Jim Edmonds, OF, Milwaukee Brewers (15-day DL, oblique): It seems as though Edmonds is perpetually injured, so this is no surprise. This is retroactive to May 16, so Edmonds could be back at the very end of May.
Rafael Furcal, SS, Los Angeles Dodgers (15-day DL, hamstring): Furcal still isn't quite 100 percent, and may not be activated until next week.
Scott Hairston, OF, San Diego Padres (15-day DL, hamstring)
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, San Francisco Giants (15-day DL, shoulder/knee): The saga of Sanchez continues to have twists and turns. Sanchez was expected to be activated by now but now may not be ready until Wednesday or even later.
Travis Snider, OF, Toronto Blue Jays (15-day DL, wrist): Snider was hot before he injured his wrist, so let's just hope there are no lasting effects; wrist injuries can linger and sap power.
Injury list: Day-to-day
Bobby Abreu, OF, Los Angeles Angels (back)
Adam Dunn, 1B/OF, Washington Nationals (illness; available to pinch hit)
Andre Ethier, OF, Los Angeles Dodgers (pinkie)
Jorge Posada, C, New York Yankees (foot)
Carlos Quentin, OF, Chicago White Sox (illness; probable)
Mark Reynolds, 1B/3B, Arizona Diamondbacks (illness)
Grady Sizemore, OF, Cleveland Indians (knee): An MRI is scheduled for Sizemore on Wednesday. With the way he's hitting, a trip to the DL might provide his owners a break.
Nick Swisher, 1B/OF, New York Yankees (biceps; probable)
Ryan Theriot, 2B/SS, Chicago Cubs (elbow)
Chase Utley, 2B, Philadelphia Phillies (illness)
Weather concerns

Weatherproof: Rockies-Astros, Giants-Diamondbacks and Blue Jays-Mariners. Rain is expected in Boston (Twins-Red Sox) throughout the day and most of the night (50 percent chance), while Arlington (Orioles-Rangers) has a moderate 40 percent chance of scattered storms

Cubs: Maybe being on the road will get Gorzelanny on track. The lefty has not won away from Wrigley Field yet but has a 2.50 ERA in his three starts. At home, he's 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA. In his last outing, which was at home, the lefty did not get a decision, giving up a season-high five runs on nine hits over five innings. He did strike out seven. Gorzelanny has made one start in his career against the Phillies and lost.Phillies: Moyer allowed four earned runs in 6 1/3 innings in a victory Friday over Milwaukee at Miller Park. Moyer has pitched fairly well this season. He has kept the Phillies in almost every game he has pitched, which accounts for his 5-2 record after seven starts. Moyer allowed three homers to the Brewers, giving him 501 homers allowed in his career. That is second in baseball history. Only Robin Roberts has allowed more with 505, but that is a mark based on longevity more than anything.

Royals: In his last start against the Chicago White Sox last Friday night, Meche tossed six innings, giving up four hits and one earned run in a 6-1 victory, although he did not factor into the decision. One strength of Meche's last start against the White Sox was his control as he only walked two of the 25 batters he faced. The 6-foot-3 righty is still in search of his first win of the season as the Royals are trying to get back on track under new manager Ned Yost.Indians: Just when it appeared Masterson was starting to figure things out, he got knocked around in a loss to the Orioles on Friday. He allowed six runs on eight hits with five walks and four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings of work. He is still searching for his first win of 2010, and the Indians' decision to place him in the rotation upon his arrival from Boston last year still hasn't paid off.

Brewers: Wolf minced no words after his last start, a loss to the Phillies in which he surrendered six runs in five innings. "It's kind of embarrassing the way I pitched," Wolf said. "I couldn't execute anything. I was behind everybody. ... There's no excuses other than I was terrible today." He's allowed at least one home run in each of his past four starts and has had trouble with left-handed hitters. Last year with the Dodgers, he limited left-handed batters to a .159 average and surrendered only four extra-base hits in 185 plate appearances. This year, left-handers are batting .302 against Wolf, with 10 extra-base hits in 60 plate appearances.Pirates: Burres had a 13 scoreless innings streak snapped his last time out and labored through his four-inning start. The left-hander scattered seven hits and allowed six runs (five earned) in what was his fourth start with Pittsburgh. To this point, only two of those starts have extended past the fourth inning. Burres' spot in the rotation is by no means secure. The club is likely to give him at least one more chance to prove that he belongs in the rotation, but the leash probably won't be much longer. Burres' only previous appearance against the Brewers came in relief. He allowed two runs on three hits in four innings.

Mets: Though the Mets have not yet announced who will step into the rotation in place of Oliver Perez, all signs point to the knuckleballer Dickey. In eight starts for Triple-A Buffalo, Dickey was 4-2 with a 2.33 ERA, numbers made better by a complete game one-hitter in late April. In his most recent start, Dickey fired eight innings of three-run ball in a victory. He will be making his first start since last August, and has not faced the Nationals since being blown out by them in June 2008.Nationals: The Nationals have decided that right-hander Livan Hernandez will pitch on three days' rest against the Mets on Wednesday night at Nationals Park. The Nationals were thinking about calling up a Minor Leaguer for that game, but after throwing 100 pitches in the first game of a day-night doubleheader against the Rockies, Hernandez went to manager Jim Riggleman's office and volunteered to take the ball. Washington needed a pitcher Wednesday because the day-night doubleheader messed up their rotation plans. Hernandez was originally scheduled to start Friday against the Rockies, but the game was postponed because of rain, and he had to pitch Saturday instead.

Rays: Davis will look to bounce back from two consecutive losses in his eighth start, when he will take the field against the Yankees for the second time this season. Davis went six innings against the Mariners on Friday and gave up home runs in the first and fifth innings, but he settled down in between. He gave up only five hits and walked three batters, striking out two. The rookie right-hander once again fell victim to an off night by Tampa Bay's hitters, as the Rays put up just one run before the eighth inning, and they only scored twice in his previous loss to the A's in Oakland. Davis' first outing of the year against the Yankees wasn't much different, as the Rays were nearly no-hit by CC Sabathia on April 10. Davis went six innings in that game, gave up four earned runs, seven hits, four walks and a home run and only struck out three batters. The key for Davis will be his fastball command, but he can't be dominant without control of his curveball. The 24-year-old struggled to locate his curve early on against the Mariners in his last outing, but he became more effective once he got it under control.Yankees: Burnett was better if still not great in his previous outing against the Twins, allowing three runs (two earned) in 6 2/3 innings. He struggled predominantly with his control, especially early, walking in a run with the bases loaded and issuing four free passes total -- all of which were on four pitches. Burnett will try to find the form he had in his only other start against the Rays this season, when he limited Tampa Bay to two runs on six hits in seven innings in a 7-3 Yankees win. His 12 wins against the Rays are his most against any team and his 2.76 ERA is his lowest against an AL team outside of the one he currently pitches for.

Reds: Harang was a 4-3 loser to the Cardinals on Friday and ended his quality-start streak at three. While the right-hander didn't have a great outing, he wasn't lousy, either. His downfall was a pair of two-run homers by Albert Pujols and Ryan Ludwick -- both were wall-scrapers that barely cleared the fence in right field. For the game, Harang gave up four earned runs on eight hits over six innings, walking two and striking out five.Braves: Kawakami is still looking for his first victory of the 2010 campaign after again coming up short on Friday night against the D-backs. Although Kawakami recorded a season-high seven strikeouts, he lasted just 4 1/3 innings, tied for his shortest outing of the year. Kawakami's struggles have only increased recently. In his last four outings, he has pitched just 20 1/3 innings with an ERA of 6.64. High pitch counts have prevented Kawakami from lasting more than 6 2/3 innings this season. Still, he hasn't been afforded much help offensively from his teammates. In Kawakami's six losses, the Braves have not scored more than three runs.

Twins: Baker pitched effectively for the majority of his last start against the Yankees, but it was in the seventh inning that he found trouble. After Baker gave up an infield single to lead off the seventh, Derek Jeter then hit a hard liner back up the middle that ricocheted off Baker's right leg and into shallow right field for a double. Baker would exit the game after being struck, but he was tagged for five runs on 10 hits over six-plus innings. He nearly matched his career high in strikeouts, falling one short with nine. And the best news was that Baker's right knee was fine the day after he was struck by that line drive. He is expected to stay in line for his next start and face the Red Sox. In his career, Baker is 0-1 with a 4.30 ERA in three appearances (two starts) vs. Boston.Red Sox: Buchholz has struggled with his command of late, walking five batters in each of his past two starts. But unlike two starts ago when that lack of control hurt him in a loss to the Yankees, Buchholz thrived en route to a victory over Detroit in his last outing. He gave up just three hits and one run over 6 1/3 innings. Buchholz hasn't fared particularly well at Fenway this season, going 1-3 with a 4.84 ERA. Interestingly, he has been dramatically better on the road, posting a 3-0 record and a 1.86 ERA in three starts. Buchholz is 16-17 in his career. Opponents are hitting .269 against him this season.

After an 0-4 start, Guthrie has won his past two outings and will look to keep that momentum going against the Rangers. Smith has started seven games for Colorado this season and has a 1-2 record and a 6.35 ERA. He feels he has regained his aggressive mindset after a run of poor starts, trusting his stuff more and getting ahead of hitters. He's 3-2 overall against the White Sox with a 3.49 ERA in six career outings.White Sox: Danks has made seven starts this season and six have been of the quality variety. In fact, the White Sox most consistent starter gave up three runs to the Twins in Wednesday's 3-2 loss and that effort marked the first time he allowed as many as three runs in a start this season. Danks struck out three, walked three and yielded seven hits over seven innings, including a pair of run-scoring, two-out hits from left-handed hitting Justin Morneau and Denard Span. He threw 109 pitches and 63 for strikes.

Marlins: A case can be made that Sanchez is coming off his best outing of the season. The right-hander beat the Mets on May 14, and it was his first win since April 22 at Houston. Sanchez matched his season high with seven strikeouts. The seven innings and 108 pitches also were season highs. Sanchez has made eight starts, and in seven of them he has thrown at least six innings.Cardinals: The Cardinals' young lefty doesn't pitch like a rookie. He's poised and doesn't get rattled, but more strikingly, he has four pitches that he throws with confidence in a wide variety of counts. The difference-maker seems to be his slider, which he used to get a slew of strikeouts his last time out. Garcia came through the Minors known for a sinker-curveball combination, but the addition of the slider (which he also sometimes throws smaller, like a cutter) has taken him a major step forward.

Giants: Wellemeyer is the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde of the Giants pitching staff. At home, he's cool, calm and collected with a 2-1 mark and a 3.04 ERA. On the road, it's a completely different story. Away from the friendly confines of AT&T Park, it's a cruel world for the right-hander, who's 0-2 with a 9.49 ERA on the road. He's 1-3 with a 4.79 ERA against the Arizona Diamondbacks for his career, and he pitched fairly well in his only start at Chase Field. He wouldn't mind facing Adam LaRoche, though, as the first baseman is a lifetime .192 hitter (5-for-26) against him. Keep Stephen Drew away from Wellemeyer, however. Drew has six hits in nine at bats against Wellemeyer.D-backs: Kennedy has been Arizona's best pitcher this year. In his last start, against the Braves, Kennedy did not receive a decision because another meltdown by the bullpen cost him. The right-hander tossed six shutout innings before Brian McCann led off the seventh with a home run. After allowing back-to-back singles later in the inning, he was removed with a 4-1 lead, only to watch Juan Gutierrez give up a three-run homer to tie the game. Kennedy appeared in just one game for the Yankees in 2009 and four in Triple-A after missing most of the year following surgery to remove an aneurysm near his right shoulder. The right-hander came in the same three-team trade that netted the D-backs Edwin Jackson.

All told, he allowed two runs over six innings. Garland felt he could have pitched better. "Way too many balls, way too many walks. ... I gave them too many opportunities," he said. "It definitely seemed like a big struggle out there."Dodgers: Ortiz, making his first Major League start in nearly three years, was charged with three runs in four-plus innings Friday night, when the Dodgers rallied to beat the Padres. That, and the fact that the Dodgers have few other options, convinced manager Joe Torre to give him another spot start. Torre praised Ortiz's ability to minimize damage, and while that's a back-handed compliment of sorts, the manager also said he went with Ortiz instead of rookie Carlos Monasterios because Ortiz's pitch count is now approaching 90. A career starter, Ortiz said he finds it easier to prepare for starts with a regular five-day routine after pitching the first month out of the bullpen.

But the Blue Jays had their aerial game working, and five home runs helped overcome Cecil's subpar outing to produce a 16-10 victory and present him with a no-decision. Fortunately for Cecil, he won't have to face the Rangers this time. He has allowed 15 earned runs over seven innings in two career starts against Texas.Mariners: One of the biggest surprises in the Major Leagues during the first month and half of the season, Fister hopes to continue his state-of-the-art pitching against the visiting Blue Jays as the Mariners begin a homestand. Fister ranks third in the American League in ERA and is a close second to Cliff Lee as the most consistent starter in the Seattle rotation. He was put to a stern test in his previous start, holding the Rays to one run over five tough innings. A high pitch count got him out of the game, not the Rays hitters.
