DeRosa suspended for throwing ball at fan during Game 2

NEW YORK (AP)

Referee Joe DeRosa has been suspended without pay for throwing a ball at a fan during halftime of an NBA playoff game in Orlando.

DeRosa will miss the next game he would have been scheduled to work.
At halftime of Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals between Orlando and Boston, DeRosa was walking to the scorer's table to get the warm-up jackets for his crew.

A fan behind the table approached DeRosa, gesturing with his arms and appearing to be shouting at the veteran official. DeRosa flipped the game ball to the fan, who tossed it back.

One game seems pretty light. Could you imagine if Rasheed Wallace did that? How many games would he have gotten?

The tossing of the ball was as gentle as could be. More playful than anything. A suspension for that is a joke.

That's not really the point. In fact, these NBA officials have gotten to the point where they hold grudges against certain players and some of them have let their egos get in the way.

That guy should be gone for the playoffs at the very least.

That's correct. He was just moved to a different seat. I'm sure it's because he's the CEO of some company and he buys season tickets, very expensive ones.

don't see why the fan should've had to move at all... he's well within his rights to yell at an official (legally i guess not, but imo he is - you pay for the seats & you can say whatever you want for the most part).

To a certain extent I agree with you. Obviously if the guy is yelling death threats he's gone. Also, if the guy is throwing f bombs everywhere he's going to get ejected as well.

The fan certainky has a right to yell at him though as long as it's within reason.

Meanwhile JACK can yell at the officials all he wants in LA from his front row seat.

The official made a mistake, the suspension was a good one.

Got off very light. Joe DeRosa is another company man clown with a huge ego.

The ref is an ahole. u pay that much for seats you should be able to do what you want as long as you are not doing something crazy like threatening his life etc.

was watching it when it happened, and remember the announcers saying, they "thought" the fan had been ejected...and even the announcers were like "wtf is he being ejected for?".....he was barking, like all the fans do, and the ref threw/tossed/flipped (whaterver you want to call it) at him, in the stands, and he flipped it back....someone throws a ball like that at me, and its coming back at them twice as hard....guy didnt do that, he just flipped it back, like it was done to him.....

Ref was out of line....
