An unlikely spoiler, Juan Castro breaks up bid with two outs in bottom of 8th. Dice K goes 8 full giving up just the one hit. Marco Scutaro came up inches short of an over-the-shoulder grab on Castro’s soft looper.
The Phis had hit several balls very hard but Boston's defense was able to turn them all into outs. With the no hitter gone Sox reliever Daniel Bard pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to complete the 1 hit 5-0 shutout of the powerful Phils.

Red Sox notes: Matsuzaka singled in the second inning, marking his first career regular-season hit. He had been 0 for 8 with four strikeouts in the regular season. He did get a hit in the 2007 World Series. … Jacoby Ellsbury led off and played center field, marking his return to Boston’s lineup after a 37-day stint on the DL with broken ribs.
Ellsbury went 0 for 4 with a walk and a run scored. Ellsbury is scheduled to move to left soon when Center Fielder Mike Cameron returns from a one month stint on the DL with Kidney stones/abdominal strain problems. Ellsbury is expected to solidify the Sox batting order at the lead off position with Dustin Pedroia (currently slumping) batting 2nd,
A day after sitting out Triple-A Portland's doubleheader, Mike Cameron is expected to be back in the lineup Sunday.
The Sox are expected to reassess Cameron's fitness after the game with the hope that he'll be ready to come off the disabled list on Monday. Cameron has nearly a week's worth of rehab starts under his belt and could come off the DL at any time, but with Jacoby Ellsbury's return to the lineup, Boston's outfield situation doesn't feel quite as dire. Nevertheless, he should be back in the majors soon, possibly as soon as Monday.
The big question mark continues to be Josh Beckett effectiveness and is his stiff back a real worrisome problem. Right now only time will tell. Veteran knuckleballer Tim Wakefield will sub for the ailing Beckett against of all people Phillies new ace Roy Halladay today, a foe they know well, though it will be the first time with him in a Phillies uniform. Boston has been one of the few teams with some success off the ace, with a 14-14 record against him. Halladay also has a 4.28 ERA against the Sox. The Phils are -235 favorites in a day game at Citizens Bank, something you don't see a lot of against Red Sox teams over the last decade.
