Gary Coleman has slipped into a coma and is currently on life support after suffering a head injury at his Utah home this week, the actor's spokesman announced Friday morning. The former 'Diff'rent Strokes' star fell and hit his head on Wednesday and was taken to the ICU at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. John Alcantar, a spokesman for the actor, said in a statement that Coleman was at first "conscious and lucid," but that his condition quickly took a turn for the worse.

"We are saddened to announce that since mid-afternoon, Mountain Time, on May 27, 2010, Mr. Coleman has been unconscious and on life support."

Alcantar did not list Coleman's exact condition, however ABC News is reporting that the actor suffered an intracranial hemorrhage.

In thanking his supporters, Alcantar said Coleman "always has had fond memories of being an entertainer and appreciates his fans for all their support over the years."

He added: "At this critical moment, we can only ask for your thoughts and prayers for Gary to make a speedy and full recovery."

Earlier on Thursday, Coleman's wife, Shannon Price, released a brief statement to KUTV asking for support, saying: "Gary was taken to the hospital with a serious medical problem yesterday, we are asking for everyone's prayers at this time. We hope those prayers are answered and that Gary will be able to recover and return home soon."

Coleman's health has been an issue of late, as the 42-year-old actor has suffered two seizures this year. The first occurred on January 6, while the second took place in late February while he was on the set of 'The Insider.' During the 911 call from the latter incident, an 'Insider' staffer who called it in told the operator, "We have someone having a seizure right now on our stage ... we just need someone as soon as possible."

The actor has also undergone two kidney transplants -- one in 1973 and one in 1984 --- to help curb the kidney disease nephritis, which he has battled for decades. It's that disease which is responsible for stunting his growth.

Health woes aside, Coleman has also found himself in legal trouble in recent years. In January, Coleman was arrested at his Utah home after failing to appear in court for a domestic violence warrant. The domestic violence charges were eventually dropped, and he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor criminal mischief charge. He was ordered to take a domestic violence class and pay a $595 fine.

Former child star Gary Coleman dies at 42

‘Diff’rent Strokes’ star suffered intracranial hemorrhage

SALT LAKE CITY — Former child TV star Gary Coleman died Friday at a Utah hospital after suffering an intracranial hemorrhage at his home. He was 42 years old.

Coleman suffered the hemorrhage Wednesday at his Santaquin home, 55 miles south of Salt Lake City. He was admitted to the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center and was conscious and lucid until midday Thursday, when his condition worsened and he slipped into unconsciousness. Coleman was then placed on life support.

Coleman has had continuing ill health from a kidney disease he suffered as a child. He had at least two kidney transplants and has ongoing dialysis.

An ambulance was called to Coleman’s home Wednesday, and he was initially transported to Mountain View Hospital in Payson, the nearest medical facility, said Dennis Howard, Santaquin’s director of public safety.

The family statement says Coleman was later moved to the regional medical center in Provo for additional tests and treatment.

The hospital did not give details on Coleman’s condition beyond calling it an intracranial hemorrhage, which is bleeding inside the head.

However, Coleman's brother-in-law told TMZ that the actor sustained a head injury during a fall. His father-in-law, Dale Price, also told UsMagazine.com that Coleman fell.
Dr. Jennifer Majersik, a stroke specialist and assistant professor of neurology at the University of Utah, said intracranial hemorrhages can be broken vessels within the brain itself or next to it. Majersik, who is not involved in Coleman’s treatment and is unfamiliar with the case, said the most serious types involve a broken vessel inside the brain.
Hemorrhaging can also occur on the surface of the brain or in the protective layers between the brain and the skull, Majersik said.
