Selected notes:
• Top of the charts: As we said at the top, the Cardinals are in decent shape with Adam Wainwright on the hill, and he's the leader in the clubhouse for Sunday's action. Jon Lester is right on his tail, with a 3-1 record and a 1.20 ERA against the Kansas City Royals. Clayton Kershaw hasn't allowed more than one earned run in any of his past four starts, including a 2-0 win against the Rockies.
• Mike Leake gets a second shot at the Astros, having already slain the dragon back in April, allowing only one run and five hits in seven innings. James Shields also has a win under his 2010 belt against the White Sox, so he rounds out our top five, ahead of Dallas Braden and his 6.63 career ERA against the Detroit Tigers.
• Rounding out the top 10: Ricky Romero has never beaten the Orioles and has a 5.47 ERA against them, so he rises no higher than ninth on our list. A.J. Burnett has a similar checkered past against the Indians, with a 1-4 record and a 6.69 ERA in the history books.
• Middle-of-the-road options: Felix Hernandez will win again someday, but the 4.63 ERA against the Angels isn't exactly regal. Jake Peavy also brings baggage into Sunday's start in the form of a 5.56 ERA against the Tampa Bay Rays, including a four-inning, seven-run loss earlier in 2010.
• Streamers on alert: Ian Kennedy held the Giants to one run and three hits in a victory a little more than a week ago. John Garland has a 3.86 career ERA against the Nationals, while Joe Saunders is 7-1 lifetime against the Mariners with a 3.06 ERA.
• Thanks, but no thanks: Todd Wellemeyer already lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks this season allowing five runs in five innings, and is 1-4 with a 5.61 ERA against them for his career. Winless Felipe Paulino is 1-4 with a 5.51 ERA against the Reds. Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey is all set for his second start for the Mets, but couldn't feel his (non-pitching) hand after getting hit with a Ryan Howard line drive in his latest outing. As such, it's hard for a fantasy owner to feel good about going with Dickey.

Hitters' count: Sunday
• Robinson Cano, 2B, New York Yankees: Not only is he hitting .395 during a 10-game hitting streak, but he's 4-for-7 lifetime against Justin Masterson of the Indians. What could possibly go wrong here?
• Delmon Young, OF, Twins: Young has seven hits in his past five games and has hit.349 against the current Texas pitching staff, including 2-for-4 with a home run against Derek Holland.
• Chase Headley, 3B, Padres: Headley has hits in eight of his past nine starts and faces Livan Hernandez, against whom he's walked three times, singled and homered in his past five plate appearances.
• Nick Markakis, OF, Orioles: Hitting .326 for May, he hopes to keep the good times rolling against Ricky Romero, thanks to an OPS of 1.000 in 13 career at-bats.
• Joey Votto, 1B, Cincinnati Reds: Assuming Votto has recovered from his stiff neck, things should be looking up for the first baseman against Felipe Paulino, against whom he's hit .313 for his career.
Pitchers' count: Sunday
• Chipper Jones, 3B, Atlanta Braves: Oh, Larry! Not only is he suffering through a dismal .209 month at the plate, but he's 0-for-6 lifetime against Paul Maholm.
• Troy Tulowitzki, SS, Colorado Rockies: Tulo has been terrific, with an 11-game hitting streak that has included five home runs. Obviously, you can't sit him, but do take note he's only 2-for-18 against Clayton Kershaw, with seven strikeouts.
• Blake DeWitt, 2B, Los Angeles Dodgers: He's hitting only .211 against the current Colorado conglomeration of arms, and is 0-for-3 against Jhoulys Chacin. I'll avoid the annual "Three's Company" joke at Blake's expense and simply recommend a sit.
• Carl Crawford, OF, Rays: Crawford hit only .207 against the White Sox in 2009, and though he did go off against them in April (6-for-13), he is only 1-for-6 against Jake Peavy with four strikeouts.
• Hideki Matsui, DH, Angels: Matsui is quite the subservient subject against King Felix, hitting only .188 for his career against Hernandez, with nary an extra-base hit in the mix.
Baseball Challenge Picks of the Weekend

Saturday: Ian Kinsler, 2B, Texas Rangers: His recent nine-game hitting streak came to an end, but Kinsler should get right back on that horse, as he's 5-for-6 lifetime against Carl Pavano with a pair of home runs and six RBIs to his name.
Sunday: Stephen Drew, SS, Diamondbacks: He has a .321 batting average for the month of May, and is in the midst of a seven-game hitting streak. Todd Wellemeyer is just gasoline to the fire, as Drew is 7-for-11 against him with two home runs.

Tickets Yankee Stadium | 1:05 PM ET
CLE Justin Masterson, RHP (0-5, 6.13)
Indians (18-29) @ NYY A.J. Burnett, RHP (5-2, 3.55)
Yankees (29-20)

Indians: Masterson remains in the Indians' rotation, for now. But suffice to say he's on shaky ground, given his results in a starting role the past two seasons. He hasn't notched a win since Aug. 20, 2009, losing 11 consecutive decisions. That's just two shy of a team record. He has a 1.89 WHIP and a .386 average against when facing lefties. He was roughed up for five runs on nine hits in four innings in a loss to the White Sox on Monday. The Indians might end up moving Aaron Laffey from the bullpen to the rotation. But for now, they're sticking with Masterson, one of three pitchers acquired in last summer's Victor Martinez trade with the Red Sox.

Yankees: Burnett gets the nod on Sunday, looking for his second consecutive win. Burnett hurled five innings of scoreless, three-hit ball on May 25 at Minnesota, but threw only 75 pitches before rain forced the game to be suspended heading to the sixth. Derek Jeter homered to make a winner of Burnett, who is 2-2 in five May starts. He is 1-4 with a 6.69 ERA in six career starts vs. Cleveland.

Tickets Comerica Park | 1:05 PM ET
OAK Dallas Braden, LHP (4-4, 3.23)
Athletics (27-23) @ DET Max Scherzer, RHP (1-4, 7.29)
Tigers (25-23)

Athletics: Braden, who pitched a perfect game on Mother's Day, left his last start in Baltimore on Tuesday with a left ankle sprain. Four innings into the 1-1 game, pitching coach Curt Young and manager Bob Geren had seen enough of Braden favoring the injury, which resulted in uncharacteristic back-to-back walks and more pitches up in the strike zone than Braden usually throws. Since then, Braden has been receiving treatment and spent a couple of days off his feet and away from baseball activities. Assuming Braden is good to go in Motown, he will pitch. But any sign that the ankle is still tender and Braden might be in line for another early exit.

Tigers: The Tigers will recall Scherzer from Triple-A Toledo to return to the Tigers' rotation after a pair of dominant starts for the Mud Hens suggested he has made the adjustments in arm angle and delivery he was trying to find for the better part of a month in Detroit. He allowed a run on four hits over 15 combined innings, racking up 17 strikeouts in the process against just two walks. He was last seen on a Major League mound at Comerica Park on May 14, when he gave up three Red Sox home runs, two to David Ortiz, over five innings of six-run ball.

Tickets Rogers Centre | 1:07 PM ET
BAL Jeremy Guthrie, RHP (3-4, 3.64)
Orioles (15-35) @ TOR Ricky Romero, LHP (4-2, 3.42)
Blue Jays (29-22)

Orioles: In his last outing Tuesday against Oakland, Guthrie turned in his eighth quality start in 10 appearances this season. He held the A's to one earned run through six innings, giving up six hits and three walks while striking out two. All three of his wins this season have come over his last four starts. Guthrie is 2-4 with a 3.56 ERA in 11 career starts against the Blue Jays, five of which came at the Rogers Centre. He is 1-2 with a 3.16 ERA at the Toronto stadium.

Blue Jays: While the stats may not have been pretty, Romero's last outing Tuesday against the Angels was undoubtedly a character building performance. The left-handed sophomore was tagged for five runs within the first two innings, and even without his best stuff preceded to battle into the sixth in an effort to save the tired arms in the Blue Jays' bullpen. All in all, Romero lasted 5 1/3 innings, surrendering seven runs on eleven hits, while racking up eight punchouts. It was a disappointing start for Romero, who had only given up one run over his past two starts, and was made all the more disappointing as the game was played in Anaheim, miles from where he grew up. Look for the southpaw to seek some revenge against the Orioles, against whom he is 0-2 lifetime with a 5.47 ERA.

Tickets Great American Ball Park | 1:10 PM ET
HOU Felipe Paulino, RHP (0-7, 5.08)
Astros (16-33) @ CIN Mike Leake, RHP (4-0, 2.70)
Reds (30-20)

Astros: Paulino is trying to avoid becoming the first Astros pitcher in history to begin a season with eight consecutive losses. The big right-hander has actually pitched pretty well in his previous two starts, holding the Brewers to seven hits and two runs in six innings Tuesday in Milwaukee. Paulino faced the Reds on April 28 in Houston and gave up six hits, six runs and four walks in five innings. He's 1-4 with a 5.51 ERA in six career starts against the Reds, including 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA in three starts at Great American Ball Park. He's 3-9 with an 8.00 ERA all-time on the road.

Reds: Although Leake hasn't picked up a win in his past two starts, he continues to frustrate opposing hitters. In two no-decisions, he's pitched a combined 13 1/3 innings and allowed four runs. The Reds squandered each of the starts, as they allowed seven runs in the ninth to lose to Atlanta on May 20 and managed just one run last Tuesday against the Pirates. Leake allowed a career-high 10 hits in the loss to the Pirates, but just two went for extra bases -- one of which was on a routine fly ball that should have been caught. In his only start against the Astros, Leake allowed one run and five hits in seven innings to beat Paulino on April 28.

Tickets Sun Life Stadium | 1:10 PM ET
PHI Jamie Moyer, LHP (5-4, 4.55)
Phillies (28-20) @ FLA Anibal Sanchez, RHP (4-2, 3.23)
Marlins (24-26)

Phillies: Moyer had thrown six or more innings in every start this season, until he struggled a bit in an 8-0 loss Tuesday to the Mets at Citi Field. Moyer allowed seven hits, four runs and two walks in five innings, his shortest outing of the season. But Moyer has had great success against the Marlins in his career. He is 13-5 with a 3.18 ERA in 18 starts against Florida. The Phillies could use some of that magic in the series finale against them Sunday.

Marlins: Sanchez continued what is looking like a resurgent 2010 season with a win against the Braves on Tuesday, when he gave up two runs in 6 1/3 innings and exited with one out in the seventh and 116 pitches under his belt. The 26-year-old has now given up no more than two runs in seven consecutive starts. On Tuesday, he scattered five hits and four walks but was constantly able to pitch out of trouble and rack up six strikeouts -- two against rookie sensation Jason Heyward. Sanchez's worst start of the season came against the Phillies, when he gave up five runs in six innings on April 16.

Fenway Park | 1:35 PM ET
Bruce Chen, LHP (1-0, 2.89)
Royals (21-29) @ Jon Lester, LHP (5-2, 3.15)
Red Sox (28-23)

Royals: Chen is subbing for Gil Meche, who went on the disabled list on Saturday with right shoulder bursitis. This will be Chen's first start for the Royals although he made three early-season starts for Triple-A Omaha. In 10 relief appearances since being called up on April 23, Chen has a win, a save and a 2.89 ERA, but he's pitched only 9 1/3 innings. The Royals hope to get at least four innings from him, and right-hander Brad Thompson will be available to "piggyback" him. Chen has pitched nine times at Fenway Park with a 1-2 record and 4.74 ERA.Red Sox: Lester has been one of the hottest pitchers in the game in recent weeks. He has made five starts in May, going 4-0 with a 1.95 ERA. Most recently, Lester allowed just one hit and no runs over six innings against the Rays, walking five and striking out nine. Opponents are hitting Lester at a .198 clip this season. In his six Fenway starts, Lester is 3-1 with a 3.32 ERA. Lester has been ridiculously effective at Fenway throughout his career, going 26-6 with a 3.18 ERA in 51 games, 50 of which have been starts. He had the best game of his career against the Royals, a no-hitter on May 19, 2008. In Lester's career against Kansas City, he is 3-1 with a 1.20 ERA.

Turner Field | 1:35 PM ET
Paul Maholm, LHP (3-4, 3.98)
Pirates (20-30) @ Kenshin Kawakami, RHP (0-7, 4.93)
Braves (27-22)

Pirates: In his last outing, Maholm was fantastic, allowing just six hits and no runs in seven innings against the Reds in a game the Pirates eventually won, 2-1. Maholm left with the lead, but Pittsburgh's bullpen couldn't hold it and he got the no-decision. Afterward, he called himself effectively wild, but he was also efficient, tallying 89 pitches in seven innings. Against the Braves, Maholm has performed quite well in his career. He's only 1-1 in four starts, but he's allowed only four runs in 27 innings (a 1.33 ERA).Braves: After another misfortunate start against the Marlins on May 25, Kenshin Kawakami became the first Braves starter to lose his first seven decisions to start a season since 1985. Recently, however, it's been more tough luck than anything. Against the Diamondbacks on May 14 and against the Marlins on Tuesday, the righty was afforded little run support. And in his best chance for a win, against the Reds on May 19, the Braves bullpen faltered. The 34-year-old has an ERA of 3.31 in his past three starts and hasn't surrendered more than five runs in an outing this year.

Tropicana Field | 1:40 PM ET
Jake Peavy, RHP (3-4, 6.05)
White Sox (21-28) @ James Shields, RHP (5-2, 2.99)
Rays (34-16)

White Sox: The right-hander gave the White Sox world a bit of a scare following his last start at Progressive Field when talking about how he just didn't feel good on the mound. But as Peavy said two days later, it was just much to do about nothing. His 7-3 loss to Cleveland, during which Peavy allowed six runs on eight hits over six innings, was just one of those starts among 33 or 34 where he didn't have his best stuff. Peavy would like to close out this road trip on a high note, as well as finish off a rough two-month stretch to begin the 2010 campaign, when he faces the Rays at Tropicana Field. Peavy sits two wins away from 100 for his career and has a 1-1 career mark against Tampa Bay.Rays: Shields will make his 11th start of the season looking to build on what was arguably his best outing of the year, a four-hit, five-strikeout performance against the Red Sox on Tuesday. Shields gave up two runs on one hit in the third inning but responded by retiring 16 straight batters from the third inning until he left the game after eight. The right-hander has been great in May, posting a 2.65 ERA in his five starts this month and going at least eight innings in three of them. He leads the American League with 69 1/3 innings and is second in strikeouts, having fanned 71 batters -- a high number for someone who says he doesn't focus on striking out batters. This will be Shields' second start of the year against the White Sox. He gave up just two runs in seven innings against them on April 22, allowing six hits and three walks while striking out three. In six career starts against Chicago, Shields is 2-1 with a 4.17 ERA.

Miller Park | 2:10 PM ET
R.A. Dickey, RHP (1-0, 1.50)
Mets (25-25) @ Randy Wolf, LHP (4-4, 4.52)
Brewers (21-28)

Mets: Dickey worked his way through two bases-loaded jams in the first three innings and a line drive to his left elbow to earn the victory in his last start against the Phillies. The knuckleballer blanked Philadelphia in six innings Tuesday before eventually coming out of the game when his left elbow started swelling. Dickey has been cleared to play medically and is expected to get the start Sunday in Milwaukee. He attributes his recent success to trusting his knuckleball more as he has felt more comfortable throwing it from behind in the count. This has allowed his fastball to become more of a weapon, surprising hitters who are getting approximately 80 percent knuckleballs.Brewers: Wolf wasn't happy in his two starts before Tuesday's win over the Astros, calling his May 14 loss to the Phillies "embarrassing," and saying after his May 19 outing in Pittsburgh, "I'm concerned that I stink." His performance against the struggling Astros, though, left him smiling. Wolf allowed no runs on four hits in seven strong innings for his first win at Miller Park since his April 6 Brewers debut. He snapped a streak of 20 straight games that a Brewers starter pitched fewer than seven innings, since Yovani Gallardo went seven in a 2-1 win at San Diego on May 1. "We need to do that more," Wolf said.

Wrigley Field | 2:20 PM ET
Adam Wainwright, RHP (6-3, 2.38)
Cardinals (28-22) @ Ryan Dempster, RHP (3-4, 3.31)
Cubs (24-26)

Cardinals: The Cardinals will be looking for a little justice for Wainwright, who was a very hard-luck loser his last time out. Three times this season, Wainwright has allowed one or two runs in a start and the Cardinals have lost. He hasn't always pitched well at Wrigley, but he also hasn't made many starts there. There's no reason to think he can't succeed just as much at the Friendly Confines as he has everywhere else.Cubs: Dempster will close the Cubs' six-game homestand and hopes to end the way he started it. Last Tuesday, he threw eight shutout innings and snapped a personal four-game losing streak in the Cubs' 3-0 win over the Dodgers. Dempster was able to avoid the one bad inning that has snuck up on him this season. Last year, he was 0-1 with a 3.33 ERA in four starts against the Cardinals. He's 6-6 with a 4.35 ERA in his career against St. Louis

Tickets Coors Field | 3:10 PM ET
LAD Clayton Kershaw, LHP (4-3, 2.90)
Dodgers (27-22) @ COL Jhoulys Chacin, RHP (3-2, 3.09)
Rockies (26-23)

Dodgers: Kershaw's three-game win streak was snapped in Chicago, even though he didn't allow an earned run. That made it four consecutive quality starts, during which his ERA is 0.64 with 27 strikeouts in 28 1/3 innings and he's 1-1 with a 2.28 ERA on the road this year. In his most recent start, the Cubs made him work, fouling off enough pitches to run up his pitch count to triple figures after only six innings. But aside from a disastrous start against Milwaukee that lasted only four outs, he's shown the ability this year to control the damage, a very good trait at Coors Field, where he's 2-2 with a 6.92 ERA. The Dodgers have scored 10 runs in his last four starts.

Rockies: Chacin continued to pitch well against the National League West on Tuesday, this time holding the D-backs to four hits and two runs in six innings. He'll be facing the Dodgers on Sunday for the second time, having pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings against Los Angeles on May 8 for his second win of the year.

Tickets Angel Stadium of Anaheim | 3:35 PM ET
SEA Ian Snell, RHP (0-3, 4.32)
Mariners (19-29) @ LAA Joe Saunders, LHP (3-6, 4.40)
Angels (24-27)

Mariners: After a demotion to the bullpen, Snell got a do-over as a starter and made a solid second first impression. He only went five innings because of a predetermined pitch count of around 90 and wasn't very economical, but holding the Padres to one run on five hits certainly counts for something. Especially when the man he replaced, Ryan Rowland-Smith, had been struggling mightily. Snell said he worked the kinks out of his slider while in the bullpen and has restored his confidence in the pitch, giving him more versatility than he had before being demoted.

Angels: Saunders was solid against the Blue Jays on Monday at Angel Stadium, allowing three runs on just four hits over 6 1/3 innings. But the Angels offense struggled mightily, recording just two hits on the night in a 6-0 loss. Saunders did struggle with his command, however, as he walked five batters and needed 115 pitches to record 19 outs. Saunders is 7-1 with a 3.06 ERA in 11 career starts against the Mariners.

Tickets AT&T Park | 4:05 PM ET
ARI Ian Kennedy, RHP (3-3, 3.41)
D-backs (20-30) @ SF Todd Wellemeyer, RHP (3-4, 5.36)
Giants (26-22)

D-backs: Kennedy has been the club's most consistent pitcher this year. In his last outing against the Rockies at Coors Field, Kennedy searched for a pitch that would work for him, but never could find it. Still, he managed to keep his team in the game, allowing just three runs in five innings of work. Two of the runs came via homers from Brad Hawpe and Troy Tulowitzki. Kennedy did not get much offensive support as the D-backs fell, 3-2. He appeared in just one game for the Yankees in 2009 and four in Triple-A after missing most of the year following surgery to remove an aneurysm near his right shoulder. The right-hander came in the same three-team trade that netted the D-backs Edwin Jackson.

Giants: After a 24 scoreless-inning slump by the Giants offense, Wellemeyer received the gift of run support in his last outing. Against Washington on Tuesday, Wellemeyer faced little trouble until the seventh, when he was pulled after giving up three straight singles to open the inning. The Giants bullpen allowed in one run on a sacrifice fly, but that was it as Wellemeyer finished with a final line of two runs on four hits and two strikeouts. Wellemeyer's last start against the D-backs was forgettable, as he gave up five runs on four hits -- three of which were home runs -- in a 13-1 pounding. Wellemeyer holds a 1-4 record and 5.61 ERA in eight career appearances (four starts) against Arizona.

Tickets PETCO Park | 4:05 PM ET
WSH Livan Hernandez, RHP (4-3, 2.08)
Nationals (25-25) @ SD Jon Garland, RHP (6-2, 2.10)
Padres (29-20)

Nationals: On Tuesday, it looked like Hernandez was going to have one of his best games of the season, but one bad inning proved costly as the Nationals lost to the Giants at AT&T Park on Tuesday night. After allowing a leadoff double to Andres Torres in the bottom of the first inning, Hernandez retired 12 out of the next 14 hitters he faced. But it went downhill for Hernandez in the fifth, when the Giants scored four runs. During San Francisco's rally, Hernandez threw just 12 pitches.

Padres: After a semi-rough start, for him at least, Garland eventually settled down to improve to 6-2 this season while lowering his ERA to 2.10, as he tossed seven scoreless innings in the Padres' victory over the Cardinals. Garland retired nine consecutive hitters at one point. He allowed one baserunner in the seventh inning, but he got Skip Schumaker on a 5-4-3 double-play ball started by third baseman Chase Headley to end the inning. Garland struck out seven and walked two. "I thought his last three innings were pretty solid," Padres manager Bud Black said. "As you get through the first couple innings, I think both pitchers felt like they had to match each other."

Tickets Target Field | 8:05 PM ET
TEX Derek Holland, LHP (2-0, 2.95)
Rangers (26-23) @ MIN Scott Baker, RHP (4-4, 4.48)
Twins (29-20)

Rangers: In his last start against the Cubs, Holland pitched six innings while giving up three runs on four hits with five strikeouts. All three runs came on home runs. In two career starts against the Twins, Holland is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA and seven strikeouts. But for his career, he is 2-6 with a 4.98 ERA in nine starts.

Twins: Baker pitched a solid five innings in his last start against the Yankees on Tuesday. Although the game was suspended after the fifth inning, Baker was strong throughout. He allowed only three hits and faced more than three batters only once in the game. The right-hander pitched down in the zone and struck out two batters in the outing. Baker continues to prove his strength at home, where he has a record of 3-1 and allowing only 12 of his total 18 earned runs this season. Baker walked only one batter against the Yankees, and has given up one or fewer walks in his last four starts.
