The other day Kobe Bryant was asked by a reporter why he didn't seem overly excited about Lakers-Celtics. He said "I don't give a damn about it. It's for other people to get excited about. I get excited about winning." Of course we all know that Kobe was lying.
There is no way Bryant has not been dreaming of this matchup. There is no way that every nerve-ending is not tingling. Two years ago the Celtics shook Kobe and the Lakers like rag dolls on their way to an NBA title.
These are the two most iconic franchises in the sport and it doesn't pass the smell test that a competitor like Kobe doesn't want to beat Boston, in the series that starts Thursday, more than any other team.
This is a legacy-making series.
Bryant does a lot of things well, losing is not one of them. Like Michael Jordan who is always compared to, and Tiger Woods, Bryant remembers the people who embarrassed him.
Heck, they hold grudges just because it is a Tuesday.
And as much as athletes say they never think about their legacy, we know they are always thinking about their legacy.
For those who believe that Jordan exists in rarefied "Air" it is heresy to say that anyone is approaching his stature (or statue for that matter).
But a Lakers title makes it No. 5 for Kobe and No.2 without Shaq.
We have asked this before but let us put it out there again. If the Lakers beat the Celtics, can we start talking about Bryant being an equal to Jordan?
