How long after a cow is dead can they salvage the leather?

There is a dead cow on the side of a nearby road. Need to know if I can somehow turn this into a quick buck.

It died less than 24 hours ago. I saw it roaming around the area, figured they would get it back home. Then spotted it dead on the side of the road.

Hey, DAniel Boone, we are in the 21st century.

Surely it can't make ya enough money to actually consider skinning the damn thing, can it?

You're in the US, as according to your Location. Is it hot there?

Just joking - the quicker, the better. Decomposition in a humid climate at 90+ degrees happens pretty quickly. If you're gonna do it, you can't wait a week. I'd say 2-3 days max. I haven't farmed cattle in 10 years, but I know the worst stench in the world is a steer laying in a ditch face down that you pull out after two weeks of being dead.

Good Luck! Hahaha.

Last time I checked there were flies starting to gather. I'm in Florida. The humidity probably ruined the meat.

Okay, dude this isn't even close to an easy process. If so, some other jackal with a bowing knife would be scalping cattle in fields across America! You have to skin the animal. Then, you have to tan the leather. This is done by soaking the skin and then removing all the shit on the back - the meat that's left on. Then you have to remove the hair. This is done by rubbing lime (or urine - cattle urine) into the hair. Then, you scrape off the hair. Then, you have to rub it with some sort of fat (I've never personally done it, but I've heard egg yolk works?). If you don't do this, the leather will get stiff and brittle. Then....on and on and on.

Or you just get a tanning kit which has the supplies in it. I think they sell them at http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/.

You might get $200 for a properly tanned skin? We used to sell them to our butcher, who tanned them and shipped them to God knows where.

Holy shit! That's more complicated than I thought and I have no experience with any of that. I was only interested cause I heard you could get upwards of $500 for the skin.

Thanks for the help.

seems like the rancher would still own it, not like this is a deer.

It's still his property, though.

This seems like it could be theft ?
