The University of Colorado has accepted an invitation to join the Pacific-10 Conference, the first school to join the conference since 1978.
"The University of Colorado is a great fit for the Conference both academically and athletically and we are incredibly excited to welcome Colorado to the Pac-10," said Pac-10 Commissioner Larry Scott said in an e-mailed statement.
Philip P. DiStefano, Colorado's chancellor, said: "On behalf of The University of Colorado students, faculty, alumni and fans, we are proud to accept this invitation from the Pac-10 and join the most prestigious academic and athletic conference in the nation."
While Colorado has accepted the invitation, a source said more will be extended soon — probably to Texas, Oklahoma and three other schools from the Big 12.
Everything depends on Nebraska.
The Cornhuskers, a Big 12 member, are expected to announce this week that they are joining the Big Ten. If that happens, then Texas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State will bolt to the Pac-10 to create the first 16-team super conference, split into two eight-team divisions.
"They want to make the Pac-16 happen," the source said.
The league would form its own television network, with per-school revenue more than doubling.
If Nebraska remains in the Big 12 and the rest of that league stays intact, the Pac-10 would invite Utah as its 12th team and split into two six-team divisions.

Brilliant move by the Pac-10 moving fast and locking in Colorado. It now forces the hand of the Big-12 South schools and puts to rest the Baylor vs. CU debate.

So what if Colorado and Nebraska leave the Big 12? I see no reason for the rest of the Big-12 South to defect to the Pac-10. Why would you goto a conference run by inept leaders? The Pac-10 has some of the worst TV deals in all of college sports. They show their games on Fox Sports channels.

I think this is all media speculation. Big 12 should wave goodbye to Colorado and Nebraska and invite TCU and Boise St. Those teams can carry their weight in football and that is what it all comes down to. None of the other sports generate much revenue. The Big-12 will have upgraded their conference with two schools like Boise and TCU.

OMT, with all these conference re-allignments, doesn't that create a scheduling snafu with teams rushing to reschedule conference and possibly even non conference games for the upcoming football season?

PAC 10 Management was poor in the past, with a commish that was the WORST. Larry Scott knows what he's doing. First, he got the Pac 10 a better bowl deal, well before expansion talks. Next comes talk of a revised TV package. Now this. The old, bad pac 10 is gone!

Inept leaders? For sure. In the past at least. The Pac 10 has a new guy at the helm though.

Bad TV deals? For sure. Again, in the past. When they grab OU and Texas look out.

You only have to worry about the non conference games that are scheduled. The cupcakes on every schedule will be dropped in a heartbeat if need be.
