Saturday's Afternoon Tips

The folks at the FOX network return to the diamond this Saturday with another pair of televised battles, with this week’s coverage focusing on interleague action. Let’s take a closer look.
**White Sox at Cubs**
Since Interleague play started in 1997, the Windy City Series has been close to even. In the first 72 games, the White Sox hold a 37-35 edge over the Cubs, including a 4-2 performance last season.
On Friday afternoon, Ozzie Guillen and the White Sox doubled-up the Cubs 10-5 in the first game of this year’s crosstown series. A combined 26 hits and 15 runs helped the total easily go ‘over’ the closing number of 10 ½ runs. While this series usually receives top billing in the Windy City, this particular game played second fiddle to the Blackhawks, who won their first Stanley Cup on Wednesday.
The White Sox will send Mark Buehrle (3-6, 5.40 ERA) to the mound on Saturday and the club has won three of his last four starts, which is good news considering the team went 2-6 in his first eight starts. The 3-1 record is solid, but Buehrle’s also benefited from 27 runs from his offensive over this four-game span. Don’t be surprised to see a good effort here, especially when you look at his interleague stats. He’s tied for the most career interleague wins (20) and since 2008, Buehrle is 6-0 with a 1.71 ERA in nine starts against NL opponents. Total players might want to make a note that the ‘over’ has gone 7-4-1 in his 12 appearances this season.
Even though Chicago is eight games under .500 and eight games behind the Reds for the NL Central lead, the team has had one bright spot this season and its pitcher Carlos Silva (8-0, 2.93 ERA). The veteran is having a career season and Chicago fans couldn’t have imagined his success. The Cubs have won 10 straight starts with Silva on the hill after losing first his appearance, a 5-4 loss at Cincinnati back in early April. The total has gone 5-3-3 in Silva’s 11 games this year, but his last three have all gone ‘under.’ It will be curious to see if Silva can keep his success going this afternoon, considering he’s struggled against the White Sox (4-10, 5.52 ERA) over his career.
The Cubs have gone 14-14 at home this season, while the White Sox have produced a 12-15 mark on the road.
**Phillies at Red Sox**
Boston and Philadelphia meet for the second time this season, with this three-game set taking place at Fenway Park. The Red Sox took two of three from the Phillies in May and have now won four of the last six encounters between the pair. Since the two teams started squaring off in their interleague battles, Boston has gotten better of Philadelphia at home. The Red Sox have won eight of 12 and six of the last seven, but the pair hasn’t played at this venue since 2006.
The oddsmakers opened Boston as a $1.50 home favorite (Bet $150 to win $100) for Saturday and the number seems fair considering the recent encounters, plus the pitching matchup. The Red Sox dominated the Phillies 12-2 on Friday behind David Ortiz's bat and John Lackey's arm. The combined 14 runs easily jumped 'over' the closing number of 10.
After missing the first month of the season, Daisuke Matsuzaka (5-2, 4.59 ERA) is starting to get into a solid groove. Boston has won five of his eight starts this season, including three of the last four. During this run, the Japanese product has surrendered six earned runs and 17 hits in 27 1/3 innings. His control has been up and down, evidenced by 14 walks during over this span. Dice-K has already faced the Phillies this season on May 22 and he just missed a no-hitter. Despite giving up a hit in the bottom of the eighth, his teammates preserved the 5-0 shutout win.
The Phillies will counter with Joe Blanton (1-4, 6.07 ERA) and the hefty hurler also got a late jump on the season and he’s still looking for his form. Philadelphia is 2-5 in his seven starts, which includes three straight losses. Even though his numbers haven’t been consistent this season, Blanton (3-2, 3.61 ERA) has decent stats over his career against Boston, with eight of his nine starts coming with his stay in Oakland. Last year with the Phils, Blanton came up on the wrong side of a 5-2 loss to Boston, but he only gave up two earned runs.
The total on this game is sitting at 10 runs, which could be a tad high when you look at Phillies’ offense. Ironically, the drought started against Boston and Dice-K. Including that shutout, Philadelphia has scored 39 runs over its last 17 games, which translates to an average of 2.3 runs per games. It should be noted that All-Star Jimmy Rollins went on the DL at the start of this skid, which has watched the Phillies go 5-12 over this span.
Philadelphia has gone 15-14 on the road this season, while Boston owns an 18-14 record at home.

Top MLB Interleague Weekend Power Trends 6/11-6/13

The second batch of interleague games in Major League Baseball is on tap for this weekend, and as usual, there are some great regional, and even inter-city rivalries highlighting the slate. Unlike recent seasons, the National League proved more than competitive the first time around against its counterparts from the Junior Circuit, winning 22 of the 42 games. This weekend’s games should prove whether or not that was simply a fluke, or if the N.L. truly is closing the gap. Let’s take a look at some of the best matchups, including 3-game sets in Chicago, Tampa, Boston, and Minnesota, while also revealing this weekend’s list of Top StatFox Power Trends to consider.
While neither of the teams in Chicago have gotten off to good starts in 2010, when the Sox and Cubs go head-to-head, it is always intense. The South Siders are 7-games under .500 while their neighbors to the north, the Cubs are 6-games below the median. The White Sox are embarking on a 3-stop road trip and come in as winners in three of their last four games overall. They are 7-5 against the Cubs over the last three years, but the latter are 4-2 at home during that stretch. The Cubs open a lengthy homestand in this set.
One of the more interesting series’ of the weekend is in Tampa, where the Rays host the Marlins. Florida has been one of the few N.L. teams that has actually fared well in interleague play since its inception, but still, they will be looking to snap a 2-10 skid against the Rays. Tampa Bay remains the league’s best team at this point, 18-games over .500 and leading the Yankees by 2-games in the A.L. East.
In Boston, the Phillies and Red Sox renew their emerging rivalry. Boston took two of three games in Philly two weeks back. There are distinct trends in interleague play converging on this series, with Phiilies’ manager Charlie Manuel owning an ugly 24-41 mark vs. A.L. East teams, and Sox skipper Terry Francona boasting a 43-17 record against the N.L. East clubs.
At new Target Field in Minneapolis, a pair of division leaders will get together for three games when the Braves visit the Twins. Surging Atlanta has taken control of the N.L. East Division with a huge run since early May. Ironically, they have cooled off of late, going just 3-4 in their L7 games despite pounding out over 11 hits per game during the stretch. The Twins have been one of the league’s best teams at home this year, going 20-10 while hitting .291 as a club, much of the reason for the comfy 4.5-game lead in the A.L. Central. Minnesota has also been great in interleague play, 28-11 for +16.8 units over the last three seasons.
There are also big series’ out west between the A’s and Giants, as well as the Dodgers and Angels, a series which is covered fully in the StatFox MLB Series Betting regular feature.
Now, here’s a look at some of the Top StatFox Power Trends you’ll want to utilize in your weekend wagering, including several focusing on interleague performance.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Phillies at Boston Red Sox (-155, 10)

There has been more excitement among Phillies fans than in the team’s lineup these days.

Between people running out onto the field and being Tasered, to purposely puking on little girls, to toddlers taking swigs out of beer bottles, it’s a good thing the Philadelphia faithful have a lot to offer because fans surely aren’t getting their kicks watching the offense.

After getting blanked by Florida Thursday, the Phillies have been shut out a total of seven times this season. The slump the team’s offense has fallen in has produced an UNDER record of 15-5 in Philly’s last 20 games.

"When you don't score, you're not going to win the game," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "I never thought about getting shut out that many times."

Manuel has juggled the lineup about all he can, even dropping Jayson Werth completely out of it for nearly a week. Werth returned last night and went 0-for-3.

These two offensive juggernauts can no doubt put up runs but with the way the Phillies offense is trending these days, a double-digit total is just too high. Also, the three-game series between these teams in May witnessed an average of 7.33 runs per game with two going under.

Pick: Under

Texas Rangers at Milwaukee Brewers (-110, 10)

Who would have thought a little ‘ole toe would have ignited the Rangers offense?

Ten games ago, slugger Josh Hamilton phased out the “toe tap” in his batting swing. He and Texas hitting coach Clint Hurdle have been working on it since the spring and Hamilton was finally able to break the habit.

Since making the adjustment, Hambone is hitting .436 with four homers and 15 RBIs. The lefty has driven in at least one RBI in seven straight games.

"We're swinging the bats really well over the last few weeks, doing what we're capable of doing," third baseman Michael Young said. "If we keep improving on offense, we'll be in great shape at the end of the year. We're having good at-bats, working good counts, and finding ways of putting runs across."

The Rangers posted 12 runs in each of their last two games versus Seattle and are averaging 7.4 runs per outing over a 10-game period. Texas will be without its designated hitter during interleague play on the road but should continue to roll in hitter-friendly Milwaukee.

Pick: Rangers

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Brian Bannister, Kansas City Royals (6-3, 4.50 ERA)

Bannister is putting bettors’ kids through college with his recent winning streak. He’s won five straight starts, helping build 6.11 units for Royals backers. The right hander is giving up just under three earned runs per game during this stretch with 18 strikeouts and just four walks in 32.0 innings of work. In his most recent outing, Bannister went 7.1 innings, allowing only two runs on five hits in a win over the Detroit Tigers.

Cliff Lee, Seattle Mariners (4-2, 2.77 ERA)

The better Lee performance the greater the trade buzz gets. With rumors of him heading elsewhere, the former Cy Young winner is rounding into form in recent outings. Lee has not lost a start since May 16 and has been stellar in his last three trips to the mound. He’s given up a total of four earned runs on 16 combined hits while striking out 25 batters in those games. Lee will be out to erase a rough start against the Padres earlier this season, when he gave up seven earned runs on 11 hits in just 6.1 innings.

Slumping

Nick Blackburn, Minnesota Twins (6-3, 5.21 ERA
)

The Twins’ right hander has lost back-to-back starts, which isn’t setting off too many alarms bells with bettors. However, when you allow 10 total runs on 20 hits in just under seven innings, you’re about as appealing as the dugout floor. Blackburn touts an ERA south of 14.00 in June and hasn’t struck out a batter since May 27.

Mark Buehrle, Chicago White Sox (3-6, 5.40 ERA)

The ChiSox lefty is adding to the trouble on the South Side of Chicago. Buehrle is 0-1 in his last two outings, allowing six runs in each appearance. He lasted only three innings in his most recent start, giving up six hits on eight hits including a home run to the Cleveland Indians. He burned through 95 pitches in that shortened start and has thrown over 200 in his last two starts despite going just over eight total innings. Against the Cubs, the southpaw is 4-4 with a 4.58 ERA in 11 starts.

This Day in Baseball

On June 12 in Baseball History...

1939 - The greatest-ever gathering of members and future inductees of the Baseball Hall of Fame assembles in Cooperstown, N.Y., for the dedication of the museum: Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Walter Johnson, Grover Alexander, Nap Lajoie, George Sisler, Eddie Collins, Tris Speaker, Cy Young and Connie Mack accept their plaques.

1950 - Major League Baseball names Connie Mack as the Honorary A.L. Manager of the All-Star Game.

1957 - Stan Musial plays in his 823rd game for a new N.L. consecutive-game streak. This beats Gus Suhr's old record. Cardinals hurler Larry Jackson beats the Phils 4-0 to improve his record to 8-2. He has now beaten every N.L. team this season.

1961 - An ailing Bill Veeck sells his interest in the White Sox to Arthur Allyn, a minority partner. Allyn also buys Hank Greenberg's stock to acquire a controlling interest. Greenberg remains as General Manager.

1970 - Pittsburgh's Dock Ellis no-hits San Diego 2-0 in the first game of a doubleheader. Ellis walks eight and hits one and gets all his support on two Willie Stargell home runs.

1975 - Milwaukee defeats Oakland 9-7 to move within four games of first. Oakland's Billy Williams hits his 400th career home run, but is matched by Hank Aaron's first home run in Milwaukee since 1965.

1979 - The Tigers fire manager Les Moss, hiring Sparky Anderson.

1981 - At 12:30 AM, after meeting with the owners for most of the previous day, players' union chief Marvin Miller announces, "We have accomplished nothing. The strike is on.

Tips and Trends
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago White Sox at Chicago Cubs [FOX | 4:10 PM ET]

White Sox: Chicago is clearly more talented than a middle of the road team right? The White Sox have some sound pitching, yet they have one of the very worst offenses in baseball. As a result, the White Sox are only 26-33 for the year and 8.5 games behind the American Central Division leader. Chicago has scored 3 runs or fewer in 4 of their previous 6 games entering today. The battle of Chicago is always a heated rivalry, so the fans should be in for another treat. Chicago has been a terrible team from a betting standpoint, as they are down double digits both SU and on the RL this year. To be exact, the White Sox are -10.45 and -14.88 units respectively this year. Lefty Mark Buehrle has been a disappointment this year, as he is only 3-6 with an ERA of 5.40 and a WHIP of 1.49. The White Sox are 5-1 in their last 6 interleague games against a right-handed starter. The White Sox are 3-8 in their last 11 games against a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15. The White Sox are 4-1 in Buehrle's last 5 starts following an outing of less than 4 innings in his last appearance. The White Sox are 20-6 in Buehrle's last 26 interleague starts overall.

White Sox are 6-2 last 8 interleague road games.
Over is 6-1 last 7 games against a team with a losing record.

Key Injuries - RF Carlos Quentin (rest) is probable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)

Cubs (-142, O/U na): Chicago is coming off perhaps their worst fielding game of the season. Between the Cubs outfield and SS Starlin Castro, Chicago had 3 costly errors. It was only fitting that the Cubs would lose the game on a wild throw. The Cubs have frustrated their faithful fans this year, as they seem to lack any passion this year. It's been 14 long games since the Cubs last won consecutive games. Chicago is 27-33 this year, 7.5 games behind the Reds in the National League Central. The Cubs are only 14-13 this year at historic Wrigley Field. Chicago is -14.62 and -4.63 units both SU and on the RL respectively this season. The lone bright spot for the Cubs this season has been P Carlos Silva. Silva is an amazing 8-0 this year, with an ERA of 2.93 and a WHIP of 1.06. The Cubs are 6-0 in their last 6 games against a left-handed starter. The Cubs are 35-17 in their last 52 home games against a left-handed starter. Chicago is 1-7 in their last 8 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. The Cubs are 7-0 in Silva's last 7 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance.

Cubs are 4-1 last 5 interleague home games against a team with a losing record.
Under is 5-0 last 5 interleague games.

Key Injuries - 3B Aramis Ramirez (thumb) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Oakland Athletics at San Francisco Giants [9:00 PM ET]

Athletics: Oakland is leaning on their pitching staff to keep them afloat this season. The Athletics are 32-30 overall this year, 2 games behind the American League West division leader. The A's are 11-17 SU on the road this year. Oakland has played in numerous close games this year, proven by the difference in units SU and on the RL. Oakland is +3.68 and -6.56 units respectively this year. The A's have enjoyed playing close to home of late, as this will be their 3rd consecutive series in the Bay Area. Right hander Ben Sheets will take the mound tonight, as he looks to get rewarded for his work. Sheets hasn't had any run support this year, causing him to have a 2-5 record overall. Sheets has an ERA of 4.96 and a WHIP of 1.44 this year. The Athletics are 7-3 in the last 10 meetings in San Francisco. The Athletics are 3-8 in their last 11 interleague road games. Oakland is 1-7 in their last 8 interleague road games against a team with a winning record.
Oakland is 1-5 in Sheets' last 6 road starts overall.

Athletics are 10-3 last 13 road games against a team with a home winning percentage greater than .600%.
Under is 9-1 last 10 Saturday games.

Key Injuries - C Kurt Suzuki (personal) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 2

Giants (-123, O/U 7.5): San Francisco has been dominant at home all season long, as they are 19-11 there. Despite losing each of their last 2 games, San Francisco is still 32-27 SU overall. The Giants are 3.5 games behind the hotly contested National League West leader. The Giants are +0.83 and -3.56 units both SU and on the RL respectively this year. San Francisco is looking for some redemption after losing all 3 games against Oakland a few weeks ago. The Giants really struggled offensively in that series, scoring a total of 1 run over the 3 games series. Lefty P Barry Zito will face his old team tonight, so finding motivation won't be difficult. Zito is 6-2 this year overall, with an ERA of 3.15 and a WHIP of 1.24. The Giants are 6-14 in their last 20 interleague games against a team with a winning record. The Giants are 8-3 in their last 11 home games against a right-handed starter. San Francisco is 7-3 in Zito's last 10 home starts against a team with a winning record. The Giants are 2-9 in Zito's last 11 interleague starts.

Giants are 4-1 last 5 home games against a team with a road winning percentage less than .400%.
Under is 7-1 last 8 interleague games.

Key Injuries - LF Mark DeRosa (wrist) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3 (UNDER - Total of the Day)

Daily Sports Roundup: June 12

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The White Sox and Cubs play at Wrigley, the Marlins take on the Rays, and England battles the United States in World Cup action.

Chasing World Cup glory . . .

There are three more games on the World Cup schedule for Saturday, with South Korea vs. Greece (7:30am ET), Argentina vs. Nigeria (10am ET), and England vs. the United States (2:30pm ET). Argentina is the biggest favorite for Saturday, as they're set at -250 to win, with Nigeria the +650 underdog, and the draw odds at +330. Greece is listed at +150 against South Korea (+180), with those draw odds at +200, while England is a -200 favorite against the United States (+450). That match's draw odds are +330. England is the -275 fave to win Group C, while the United States is at +400.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Mark Buehrle (3-6, 5.40 ERA) is scheduled take on Carlos Silva (8-0, 2.93 ERA) when the White Sox and Cubs continue their interleague series at Wrigley Field on Saturday afternoon. Lefthander Buehrle will be looking to turn things around after he was blasted in each of his last two starts for the White Sox - surrendering 12 earned runs on 20 hits over 8 1-3 innings against the Indians and Rangers. Righthander Silva, on the other hand, continues to be on a roll. Silva won his sixth straight start last time out, holding the Pirates to just one earned run on four hits over seven innings, fanning five.

Elsewhere around baseball on Saturday it'll be St. Louis at Arizona, Houston at the Yankees, Philadelphia at Boston, Washington at Cleveland, the Mets at Baltimore, Pittsburgh at Detroit, Atlanta at Minnesota, Kansas City at Cincinnati, Texas at Milwaukee, Toronto at Colorado, Seattle at San Diego, Oakland at San Francisco, the Angels at the Dodgers, and Florida at Tampa Bay. Ricky Nolasco (5-4, 4.60 ERA) is expected to take on Matt Garza (6-4, 3.31 ERA) in that Marlins/Rays matchup. Righthander Nolasco took a no-decision against the Mets in his last start (three runs over 5 1-3 innings), while Garza defeated the Rangers last time out (four runs over 5 2-3 innings).

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there are just two games on the WNBA's schedule for Saturday, with New York at Washington and Tulsa at Phoenix. The Shock and Mercury already met once this season, with Phoenix picking up a 110-96 road win back on May 25. Diana Taurasi was good for 35 points for the Mercury in that contest, while Penny Taylor chipped in with 29 points. Amber Holt poured in 20 points off the bench for the Shock in that loss.

Saturday's six-pack

-- Flip side of the pitch count debate: Cal-State Fullerton left starting pitcher in to start 8th inning late Friday night, even though he already threw 116 pitches in first seven innings. This is why minor leaguers are on a pitch count early in their pro careers. Colleges abuse kids' arms.

-- I was surprised to hear that Fullerton is now 39-8 in its last 47 games vs UCLA; you'd never think Bruins would get dominated like that by a Big West school, in any sport, but Fullerton is a baseball power.

-- Angels' Joel Pineiro became only second AL pitcher ever (Eldred in 2000) to score three runs in an interleague game, and he did it without hitting a fair ball- walked twice, reached on wild pitch after a strikeout.

-- Something is wrong with James Shields; he is now 0-3, 13.50 in his last three starts, after Marlins got 10 runs off him in just 3.1 IP Friday. He's thrown a lot of innings the last 3.5 years; has it taken its toll?

-- I read Charlie Bell's quote in the box down below and ask myself why Tom Izzo would ever want to coach an NBA team. Ever.

-- AL teams were 8-6 against NL teams Friday, putting them ahead in season series, 29-27. Its odd; six of the seven non-DH games went over the total, while under was 4-2-1 in the DH games, in AL ballparks.

***************************************

Saturday's List of 13: More things I'd do if I was worth $4.6B.......

13) Not having to work anymore, I'd catch up on my reading: I have this stack of 15-20 books I want to read. so I would read all of them.

12) I'd volunteer to be a career counselor for high school kids; guidance counselors in high schools have too much to do. Being so wealthy would give me credibility with kids, not that being rich would make me any more well-suited to give advice. Think the kids would listen, though.

11) I'd make a list of people who've been nice to ne during my life (and it would be a pretty long list) and I'd look those people up and thank them in person. We don't say thank you enough.

10) I'd enter the World Series of Poker once, just to see what it was like. Wouldn't last long probably, because I suck at poker, but think it would be quite an experience, and life is about good experiences.

9) Would love to see a Saturday night football game at LSU; have seen an Alabama-Tennessee game (great fun) so now I'd like to do an LSU game on Saturday night and a Saints game in New Orleans Sunday/Monday.

8) Want to spend an afternoon in the bleachers at Wrigley Field watching the Cubs. I've been in that neighborhood, but haven't seen a game there.

7) I'd love to be an extra in a movie. Think I'd be big box office. LOL

6) Would be great fun to walk on a beach Christmas morning, as long as it was a very warm beach. I've done it on New Year's, never on Christmas.

5) I'd learn to play the saxophone. Either that or the keyboard.

4) One thing I'm going to do when I retire is learn how the stock market works. Not sure its a lot different than handicapping sports, but I want to find out. One thing about sports; half the teams win, half lose. Seems like there are days when its impossible to either win or lose in the market.

3) If I was really, really rich, I'd buy me a radio station and make myself a sports talkshow host. Its not hard to do, but it is very hard to do well. It would be fun to find out if I could do it and do it well.

2) I'd sit at a gas station and wait for someone who looked like they were having a bad day; you know the type-- slumped shoulders, dragging their feet, just out of it. Then I'd pay for their gas. Hopefully it would help in brightening their day a little bit.

1) I'd shoot baskets and ride an exercise bike every day. One of the most fun things there is for me to do is just to shoot baskets. Simple fun.

Bettor's best friend: Saturday's wagering tips

Line off the board

White Sox at Cubs – The uncertainty of wind speed and direction at Wrigley Field has kept this game’s total from being posted. You can find the overnight forecast below.

Lines to keep an eye on

Pirates at Tigers – Most sportsbooks have moved the total in this game to 8.5 after opening at 9.

Rangers at Brewers – This game’s total opened at 9.5 but sharp money quickly bumped it to 10. Both teams have played to two straight OVERS.

Weather report
(Forecasts are extracted from Weather.com the night before the game.)

Braves at Twins – A 40 percent chance of rain is expected throughout the game.

Blue Jays at Rockies – The National Weather Service forecast calls for a 40-60 percent chance of precipitation with a 13 mph wind blowing directly in from center field.

Pirates at Tigers – A 40-50 percent chance of rain is called for throughout the game.

Nationals at Indians – The forecast calls for a 50 percent chance of precipitation.

White Sox at Cubs – A 10 mph wind is projected to blow out to center field and there is a 30 percent chance of rain.

Royals at Reds – The forecast calls for a 60 percent chance of precipitation.

Who’s hot

New York (WNBA) has covered the spread in two straight games and is 7-3 ATS in its last 10 meetings versus Washington.

Spokane (AFL) has won four consecutive games, going 3-1 ATS during that stretch.

Going into Friday, the Dodgers had won four straight and were 8-2 over a 10-game span.

Who’s not

Iowa (AFL) has dropped three games in a row, going 0-3 ATS in those outings.

The Cubs have lost two straight games and are 3-7 in their last 10.

The Pirates were on a five-game slide going into Friday.

Key stat

9-1 – Dodgers’ record in one-run ballgames at home this season. L.A. is also an NL-best 15-6 in one-run games overall. As many come-from-behind and walk-off games as the Dodgers play this is a useful statistic for bettors.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Yankees third basemen Alex Rodriguez did not start Friday against the Houston Astros but was available to pinch-hit. Rodriguez left Thursday’s game versus Baltimore after the first inning after reaching for a ground ball. The Yankees slugger had an MRI Friday, which revealed tendinitis in his right hip flexor. The team doesn’t think the injury is related to the hip surgery Rodriguez had prior to last season. Ramiro Pena started at third in A-Rod's absence. Bettors will want to monitor this situation as the Yankees might think they can get by the Astros without returning Rodriguez to action.

Notable quotable

“My knee hurts, but it'll be fine. I don't weigh that much, so I don't carry around a lot of weight. We'll find a way to play through it. I'll heal while I play. I've got to get out there and help us win. That's my job.”

-- Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia said of his ailing knee that he admitted has plagued his performances at the plate.

Tips and notes

- It’s no secret that Argentina has a bevy of talent at the forward position. ESPN.com World Cup insider David Hirshey wrote in a column last week that “Argentina is going to try to win its games 11-10” behind its arsenal of strikers that includes the player that many consider the best in the world – Lionel Messi. The total in the Argentina-Nigeria match Saturday sits at 2.5 (-115/over) and with all the buzz being created over the favored team’s scoring prowess over bettors might want to get on this one sooner than later.

- The Brazilian group of referees that will officiate the USA-England match Saturday was given a crash-course on English-language curse words in order to keep players from verbally abusing one another. Because FIFA thought this was important for the integrity of the game these officials might be quick to pull the trigger on a yellow or red card. The English captain said his squad must be on their best behavior because the team has “had experience of losing big players at important times." Wayne Rooney was given a yellow card Monday during a friendly for swearing at the ref. Bettors should be aware that key players could be ejected if tempers flare.

- On Wednesday, the Red Sox reported that Daisuke Matsuzaka was suffering from “intestinal turmoil.” Basically after long toss Dice K puked which didn’t allow him to complete his bullpen session. Matsuzaka was spectacular in his last outing but had been shaky in two starts prior. After he walked eight hitters in a loss to the Royals on May 27, Dice K said that his “lower body wasn't cooperating” which caused him to have “no movement and…no bite to my pitches.” The language barrier between Matsuzaka and the Boston medical staff/coaches is a vast one and the righty has been known to hide injuries before. The Sox are -150 favorites at home versus Philadelphia Saturday.

Pitchers Report - June

If it’s June, school is out. And so too will be the NBA (we think). It’s also the time of the season when MLB pitchers look to ace exams in hopes of keeping their teams in the pennant chase. To get a better feel on what to expect, let’s examine their results from exams in the past.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team starts the last three seasons during the month of June. On the flip side, we’ve also listed pitchers that struggle in June team starts, winning 33% percent or less of their efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each June over the last three years. I’ll be back next month with July’s Good Month Pitchers. Until then, enjoy…

GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

Gavin Floyd - Chicago White Sox: 10-2
Dan Haren - Arizona Diamondbacks 13-4
Felix Hernandez - Seattle Mariners: 12-2
Scott Kazmir - L.A. Angels: 8-4
John Lackey - Boston Red Sox 11-4
Ricky Nolasco - Florida Marlins: 8-2
Andy Pettitte - N.Y. Yankees: 11-5
Tim Wakefield - Boston Red Sox: 11-5
Carlos Zambrano - Chicago Cubs: 14-3

BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

Bronson Arroyo - Cincinnati Reds: 4-13
Joe Blanton - Philadelphia Phillies: 5-12
Jon Garland - San Diego Padres: 5-11
Livan Hernandez - Washington Nationals: 6-12
Tim Hudson - Atlanta Braves: 4-8
