I know it's early but I've already looked over every single D-1 team. My thoughts on Iowa are as follows:

Iowa defense:

They remind me lots of Alabama's defense last year. Might be the top defense in the country. They'll improve on that run defense quite a bit and they can pressure the QB. Corners and safeties are almost all back and I don't think anyone will be able to pass on them effectively. Tip top unit.

Iowa offense:

Definitely the weak link. Some skill players are back (Stanzi most importantly) but that offensive line is going to be a problem. I know Iowa usually gets their shit together on the offensive line but they have only 2 starters back and one of them is a sophmore (Reiff). Bulaga would have been huge if they came back. I look for them to struggle to run and it will, in turn, hurt the passing game.

Iowa overall:

Defense will win them lots of games and they could go undefeated with roadies at Wisconsin and Ohio State being the ones they are most likely to lose. A half decent offense is all that separates them from being a top 10 team in my eyes. I look at them as a 11-18 ranked squad this year and I think they'll get better late in the season as the offensive line gets their shit figured out. Ohio State is the only Big-10 team I like more.

What ya think?

They are getting so much limelight these days, going to be hard to find a SOFT line.

Make no mistake, the IOWA football program is gaining some traction.

I believe that Ohio State goes to Iowa this year

Damn you are right. I was looking at last year's schedule. In that case, I don't think Wisconsin is a problem since that's a home game also. Iowa has a fairly easy schedule and Ohio State might be the only loss.

Feel bad for the other Iowa team no other conference interested in having Iowa state join when Big 12 disbands

My thoughts are that they are far too slow to be the best defense in the nation and it is an insult to last years Tide defense to compare them. Let alone the NU defense which was the best last year, and not close.

They are the only 2 Hawkeyes that have their jersies retired.

Correct for thing in common #1 but I am looking for two distinct things besides going to Iowa at all in common.

Gravy that is a guess that barely touches on the thing the two Iowa greats have in common.

You are right it is erie and tragic. The 2nd thing they had in common other than retired numbers (only two at Iowa)

Nile Kinnick – The guy did it all. He won the Heisman, Walter Camp and Maxwell trophies and was named Big Ten MVP in 1939, served as senior class president at Iowa and was a Phi Beta Kappa member. After graduation, Kinnick enrolled in law school but left after only one year to enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve.Tragically, his life was cut short when he died in a crash of his fighter plane during a training flight on June 2, 1943 at the age of 24. Kinnick was a charter member of the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951, and Iowa renamed its football stadium in his honor in 1972.

Cal Jones – A three-time, first-team all-conference pick at guard, Jones became Iowa’s first recipient of the Outland Trophy in 1955. A native of Steubenville, Ohio, Jones had originally verbally committed to play his college ball at Ohio State. But when two close friends and high school teammates opted to go to Iowa, Jones decided to join them. After finishing his college career, Jones signed with Winnipeg in the Canadian Football League and made the all-pro team as a rookie. He was on his way home after the CFL All-Star Game when the plane in which he was riding crashed just north of the U.S.-Canadian border, killing all aboard. He was only 23.

They said the Iowa defense had no speed last year............

Meanwhile, LB and 2nd round draft choice Pat Angerer had the fastest 40 at the combine for a LB.

This years DL may be the fastest DL in the country and arguabbly the best overall unit in the nation(Atlons has them rated #1)..........BINNS and CLAYBORN at the DE position are both effective pass rushers and with former DE BALLARD on the inside, this unit should provide for a more then solid pass rushing DL.

CLAYBORN has a shot to contend for the Heisman(no chance of winning), and would like to see him make it to NY for the season ending ceremony.............not only a great player, but a great kid and one of the most loyal hawkeyes in recent memory.

WILHEIM........thanks for the informative posts on two of the greatest hawkeyes to put on an Iowa football uniform.
