I never saw the point of wearing a watch, especially now when there is a clock in everything from your cellphone to a toaster oven.

I could perhaps see a watch if it was 1860 and you're on horseback.

a watch is not only as a functional object imo. many things can be said of a person by the choice of a watch.

TRUE, it is pure jewelry to me with no function, like a ring.

I see wristwatches going the way of pocket watches that were common 150 ( or so) years ago.

I find a watch to be a pretentious and useless item...maybe giving one the opportunity to visually say "Look at me , I own a Rolex watch." Even worse are the guys buying fake ones.

I'm not a fan of 100% useless items, especially when just used as status symbols.

I wouldn't wear a single piece of jewelry if I had a billion dollars. I'd still wear sneakers and T-shirts

Looks like the gold is worth some good money. Probably fairly old
and the watch is valuable.

I have never owned a watch. Never will.

I have never bought a watch, have "owned" one or two as gifts, but never really wore one for more than a few days. I wear no jewelry, gave up on a wedding band after about a week.

Jewelry just feels uncomfortable to me.

A $10 Timex would keep just as good time as some $50,000 watch ( for all practical purposes). The point is a watch has no real function anymore, it really had little use back in the 1970's.....well a bit more then. Car radios were more push button mechanical and lacked LCD displays, so maybe a watch back then....

As a last resort, I could find out the time in a foreign country ( not knowing the language) by pointing at my wrist, if I couldn't find a clock ( casino maybe ?)

A watch might as well be a bracelet.

It can get you killed also.

10k Gold only or 10/24 or 41.66 % Gold. I'd guess around $150 as a scrap value ( maybe less). Value of this item as a timepiece should be much higher, but I can't estimate that.

why not. plenty wear em now.

Well because there is really no longer any practical reason to wear a wristwatch, much like pocket watches went out of style. back in the 70's and before, there was at least some practical reason for a watch.

Do young men ( college age) wear watches now ?

I doubt many do, if you don't wear one informally, you probably don't wear one going out.

A watch really serves no purpose anymore.
