Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Baltimore Orioles at San Francisco Giants (-200, 7.5)

It's hard to pick winners, but this is the time of year that it becomes increasingly easier to pick non-winners. They stick out like sore thumbs and sore losers.

Take the Orioles, owners of the worst record in baseball and losers of 14 of their last 16 games. It's becoming less of a streak and more of a trend.

And when things start going bad for a team like the O-Birds, they start getting worse. Fingers are pointed and blame is shifted to all the wrong places.

Even manager Luke Scott is taking out his frustration on the umps instead of his players. After being ejected from Saturday night's loss to the Mets for arguing balls and strikes, he made it sound liike his team was the victim of conspiracy rather than its own poor play.

"It has just been difficult, trying to overcome obstacles. There's just been things that just haven't gone our way," Scott said. "From large strike zones to balls right at people. That's part of the game, that happens. But what can you do? We have to find a way to overcome these obstacles."

Or you could play better baseball, but hey, let's be real. The downtrodden Orioles took another beating Sunday before boarding a plane across country to San Francisco. Bet that was a pleasant flight, unless the pilot missed his landing zone.

The Orioles have dropped 40 of their last 51 on the road and are pinning their hopes on a winless Chris Tillman. The Giants have won 11 of their last 14 at home and send a steady Jonathon Sanchez to the hill. Sanchez (4-5) is no guaranteed winner, but he's facing a group of sure-fire losers.

Pick: Giants

Seattle Mariners at St. Louis Cardinals (-300, 7.5)

Less than two weeks ago, Mariners pitcher Lucas French was getting roughed up by the Sacramento River Cats. Today he faces the St. Louis Cardinals.

French was called up from Triple-A Tacoma on June 6 to plug a hole in the bullpen and earned a spot in the starting rotation. It didn't take much to get the field promotion - after allowing eight hits and four runs in 5 2/3 innings of relief work (6.35 ERA), French is replacing winless starter Ian Snell.

Granted, the Red Birds' bats have been in a bit of a slump lately and they are hitting just .237 against lefties. But a return home from a West Coast road swing and the chance to face a recent minor-leaguer may be just what the Cards need to get their offense rolling.

Pick: Over

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Joe Saunders, Los Angeles Angels

This lefty is in the process of salvaging what appeared to be a nightmare season. Saunders has allowed three or fewer runs in six of his last seven starts and the Halos are 6-1 over the same stretch.

Saunders pitched a complete game and surrendered just one run in his last start.

“I was getting quick outs,” Saunders told the Associated Press after the game. “When you feel comfortable on the mound and everything feels right, confidence is key.”

Slumping

Randy Wolf, Milwaukee Brewers

They say the road to recovery doesn’t begin until you hit rock bottom. The Milwaukee Brewers hope struggling hurler Randy Wolf found that dark hole in his last outing.

The lefy veteran allowed five home runs and was charged with eight earned runs in under five innings of work against the light-hitting Cubs. It was the fourth time in six starts the former Dodger allowed five or more runs.

"I have to deal with it and try and get better,” Wolf told reports following the 9-4 setback to Chicago. “I'm making a lot of mistakes out there and I'm not getting away with any of them. I'm better than that. I've just got to find a way to get better than that.”

This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On June 14 in Baseball History...

1933 - Lou Gehrig's consecutive-game streak survives, even though he and manager Joe McCarthy are thrown out of a game. McCarthy is suspended for 3 games but Gehrig's streak, now at 1,249, continues.

1952 - Warren Spahn of the Braves ties the N.L. record of Jim Whitney with 18 strikeouts against the Cubs in a 15-inning, 3-1 loss. Hal Jeffcoat's two-run triple wins it, while Spahn's home run is the only Boston score. Meanwhile, Braves scout Dewey Griggs signs Hank Aaron to a contract.

1965 - No-hit pitching and 18 strikeouts, tying the N.L. extra-inning record, net Cincinnati's Jim Maloney a 0-0 tie with the last-place Mets through ten innings. Johnny Lewis's 11th-inning home run gives New York and reliever Larry Bearnarth a 1-0 win.

1966 - Miami ekes out a 4-3 triumph over St. Petersburg (Florida State League) in 29 innings. It is the longest game not interrupted by a suspension of play in the history of organized ball. Sparky Anderson is the manager for St. Petersburg.

1979 - The Giants lose to the Cubs 8-6, but Willie McCovey hits his 513rd career home run off Dennis Lamp. McCovey becomes the most prolific lefthanded home run hitter in N.L. history.

1985 - One day after his successor Joe Altobelli was fired as manager of the Orioles, Earl Weaver comes out of retirement to manage the club. Weaver led Baltimore to six A.L. titles from 1968-82.

1990 - The N.L. announces plans to expand from 12 to 14 teams for the 1993 season. The price of admission for each expansion franchise is $95 million.

1992 - Ozzie Smith breaks Roy McMillan's N.L. mark by taking part in his 1,305th career double play.

1995 - Giants infielder Mike Benjamin goes 6-for-7 in a 13-inning 4-3 win over the Cubs. It caps a three-day binge in which Benjamin, a career .186 hitter in his first six seasons, sets a major league record with 14 hits in three games. Benjamin was 14-for-18 in that stretch.

Tips and Trends
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Blue Jays at San Diego Padres [10:05 PM ET]

Blue Jays: Toronto is starting to slide back in the brutally difficult American League East standings, as they've lost 7 of their last 10 games overall. The Blue Jays are 34-29 this season, yet are only 4th in their own division. Playing in the most difficult division can be downright unfair, but that's life in the AL East. Toronto has a winning record both at home and on the road this season. Toronto is +9.53 and +21.27 units both SU and on the RL this season. P Shaun Marcum will take the mound today, as he's been one of the most underrated starting pitchers in baseball this year. Marcum is 5-3 with an ERA of 3.38 and a WHIP of 1.12 this year. The Blue Jays are 1-4 in their last 5 interleague road games against a right-handed starter. The Blue Jays are 6-1 in Marcum's last 7 starts on grass. Toronto is 7-2 in Marcum's last 9 starts as a road underdog. Toronto is 5-2 in Marcum's last 7 starts following a team loss in their previous game. The Blue Jays are 1-4 in Marcum's last 5 starts during game 1 of a series.

Blue Jays are 1-6 last 7 games as a road underdog.
Over is 10-2 last 12 against the National League West.

Key Injuries - SS Josh McDonald (personal) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (Side of the Day)

Padres (-120, O/U 6.5): Even with a rather rare home loss, San Diego continues to lead the National League standings. The team that won't go away is now 37-26 for the season. Perhaps experts and opposition need to take this team more seriously, as they have the best pitching staff in baseball. San Diego will send P Jon Garland to the mound today, as he is 6-4 with an ERA of 2.81 and a WHIP of 1.32 this year. The Padres are one of the select few teams in MLB that is up double digit units both SU and on the RL this year. San Diego is +14.87 and +10.75 units both SU and on the RL respectively this year. The Padres are 4-0 in their last 4 games with the total set at 6.5 or lower. San Diego is 7-2 in their last 9 games against a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15. The Padres are 1-5 in their last 6 interleague home games against a right-handed starter. San Diego is 5-1 in Garlands last 6 home starts. The Padres are 4-1 in Garlands last 5 starts following a team loss in their previous game.

Padres are 8-0 last 8 home games against a team with a winning road record.
Under is 6-1 last 7 interleague home games against a team with a winning record.

Key Injuries - SS Everth Cabrera (hamstring) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Milwaukee Brewers at Los Angeles Angels [10:05 PM ET]

Brewers: Milwaukee is one of the few teams in baseball that likes life out on the road. Milwaukee lost another home game yesterday, to stand only 11-19 at home this year. On the road, the Brewers are a respectable 15-18. It all adds up to a record of 26-37, placing them 9.5 games behind the National League Central leading Reds. The Brewers simply can't put together a stretch of playing well both on offense and pitching. As a result, Milwaukee is double digits in the hole both SU and on the RL this year. The Brewers are -11.98 and -12.24 units both SU and respectively this year. Veteran P Randy Wolf will look to stop the bleeding, despite his own woes of late. Wolf has pitched poorly of late, and is only 4-6 this year with an ERA of 5.31 and a WHIP of 1.63. The Brewers are 4-1 in their last 5 games against a left-handed starter. Milwaukee is 1-5 in their last 6 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. The Brewers are 1-5 in Wolf's last 6 starts. The Brewers are 0-4 in Wolf's last 4 starts following a team loss in their previous game.

Brewers are 3-13 last 16 games as an underdog of +110 to +150.
Over is 7-2 last 9 interleague road games.

Key Injuries - C Gregg Zaun (shoulder) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Angels (-165, O/U 9.5): There might not be a hotter team in baseball right now than the Los Angeles Angels. Los Angeles has been extra hot of late while playing on the road, making their recent stretch of play all the more impressive. The Angels have turned their season around, as they are now fighting with Texas for the American League West division lead. Lefty Joe Saunders will get the start tonight, as he will look to lead his team to a 4th straight win when he starts. Saunders is turning his season around as we speak, as he is currently 5-6 with an ERA of 4.35 and a WHIP of 1.49. The Angels are 14-2 in their last 16 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. Los Angeles is 4-1 in their last 5 games against a left-handed starter. The Angels are 4-0 in Saunders' last 4 starts against a team with a losing record. The Angels are 7-1 in Saunders' last 8 interleague starts. Los Angeles is 1-4 in Saunders' last 5 starts as a home favorite of
-151 to -200.

Angels are 20-9 last 29 interleague home games.
Over is 10-3-1 last 14 home games following a road trip of 7 or more days.

Key Injuries - 3B Brandon Wood (hip) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (OVER - Total of the Day)

Daily Sports Roundup: June 14

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Giants begin a home interleague series against the Orioles, while the Netherlands and Italy play their first World Cup matches.

Chasing the World Cup . . .

The World Cup schedule for Monday has the Netherlands vs. Denmark, Japan vs. Cameroon, and Italy vs. Paraguay. The Dutch are the biggest favorite for Monday, as they're listed at -200 to get past Denmark (+500), with the draw odds at +300. Cameroon is favored at +105 over Japan (+250), with draw odds of +225, while Italy is listed at EVEN odds over Paraguay (+290), with draw odds of +220. The Dutch and Italians are both favored to finish atop their respective groups; the Netherlands is the -200 favorite to win Group E, and Italy is the -225 favorite to end up in first in Group F.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

As well, there are just four games around Major League Baseball on Monday, with Seattle at St. Louis, Milwaukee at the Angels, Toronto at San Diego, and Baltimore at San Francisco. The Orioles will send Chris Tillman (0-2, 5.54 ERA) to the mound in that last matchup, while the Giants counter with Jonathan Sanchez (4-5, 2.82 ERA). Righthander Tillman was tagged with the loss by the Yankees in his last trip to the mound despite surrendering just three runs (two earned) on eight hits over his six innings of work. Lefthander Sanchez is also coming off a losing effort - he allowed three earned runs on seven hits in five innings in his start against the Reds last game. <!-- / message -->

Monday's six-pack
After ten weeks of baseball, here are some statistical leaders......

-- Batting average: Cano .371/Morneau .350/ Ethier .343

-- HRs: MiCabrera 19/Bautista 18/Hart-Konerko 17

-- RBI: MiCabrera 56/Guerrero 54/Glaus 49

-- OB%: Morneau .460/Youkilis .450/Cano .418/Willingham .417

-- ERA: Jimenez 1.16/JGarcia 1.49/JJohnson 1.91

-- Strikeouts: Haren 97/Lincecum-Jered Weaver 96/Gallardo 94

************************************

Monday's List of 13: Going off on a variety of subjects.......

13) Ted Lilly/Gavin Floyd put on pitching clinic Sunday night; Floyd had his no-hitter broken up in 7th inning, Lilly lost his in the ninth. Cubs got a run in 7th on a Tracy single, then Marmol escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth as the Cubs salvaged the last game of a three-game series, 1-0.

12) Last no-hitter at Wrigley Field was Milt Pappas way back in '72. He is probably best known as a guy the Reds got when they stupidly traded Frank Robinson to the Orioles after the 1965 season (O's won '66 Series), but Pappas was 209-164 in major leagues, over a 17-season career. The no-hitter came in his 16th season, at age 33.

Two of the Padres who batted against Pappas in his no-hitter way back on September 2, 1972 were Toronto Blue Jays' manager Cito Gaston and Fred Kendall, the father of Royals' catcher Jason Kendall.

11) Tim McCarver suggested on the air Saturday that Stephen Strasburg should be in the All-Star Game if he is 5-1 or 6-0, "...because people want to see him." No one who makes their season debut on June 8 should be in the All-Star Game that season, no matter what FOX wants.

10) Strasburg allowed a Hafner homer and five walks in 5.1 IP Sunday, in his second big league start, as Nationals whooped Cleveland 9-4, in front of 32,876 fans, Cleveland's biggest home crowd since its home opener.

9) The San Diego State rookie has 22 strikeouts in two starts, the most by a kid in his first two starts since Karl Spooner had 27 back in 1954. Just in case you were wondering, Spooner was 10-6, 3.09 in 16 starts at ages 23-24 in 1954-55, then hurt his arm, never pitched again. Be careful........

8) Caddyshack is 30 years old? Damn, I just read that and felt very old.

7) Almost as old as last Monday, when Delino DeShields Jr got drafted by the Astros; I had his dad on my fantasy team his first three years in the big leagues, with the Expos. 1990-92. Time flies, boy.

6) Isiah Thomas holds the record for most points in one quarter in NBA Finals game, scoring 25 in one quarter in a 1988 game.

5) Kansas City is going to get the 2012 All-Star Game, which is good for Royals' fans. They could use some good news, considering the Big 12 has its headquarters in Kansas City and Big 12 may very well go away soon. The Royals' chances of being good went away a long time ago.

4) Kevin Millwood was signed by Orioles to be the Opening Day starter, their #1 guy; so far this season, he's made 14 starts, with zero wins. Ugh.

3) Severe ugliness in Memphis Sunday, as Robert Garrigus had a 3-shot lead as he stood on the 18th tee, looking for his first PGA win. Both his closest opponents parred the 18th, but in a moment that reminded us of Jean van de Velde at Carnoustie 11 years ago, Garrigus hit his tee shot in the water, his next shot in the trees, and triple-bogeyed 18, forcing 3-way playoff with Lee Westwood and Robert Karlsson. Sad day for Garrigus,as Westwood won the playoff.

2) My brief summation of the NBA Finals: The Celtics are tougher, both mentally and physically. Now, they still have to win another road game, but they're killing the Lakers on loose balls and hustle plays.

1) Vince Young was involved in some kind of an incident in a strip club in Dallas this weekend; he was issued a citation by police. I'll say two things about this and be done with it.........

a) You never, ever, ever want to see your QB involved in something like this, but it seems to be happening more often, which isn't good.
b) How much money does he make? If he likes strippers, can't he bring them into his house, away from potential trouble......how hard is this?

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

Blue Jays-Padres total opened at 7 but has fallen to 6.5 at most books.

Orioles-Giants total opened at 7.5 but has climbed to 8 at some books.

Weather to watch

Mariners-Cardinals: 60 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Who's hot

Giants have won 12 of their last 17.

Angels have won 10 of their last 12.

Who's not

Orioles have lost 15 of their last 17.

Mariners have lost eight of their last 10.

Cardinals have lost six of their last seven.

Key stat

1.1 - Average number of goals scored per game in the first seven World Cup matches before Germany blew the curve with a 4-0 victory over Australia on Sunday afternoon. The low scoring has been bad news for fans who like offense but great news for UNDER bettors. It may be too early to call it a trend but the new lopsided adidas ball may be hurting offensive players more than goalkeepers, with the possible exception of England's Robert Green.

Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Jack Wilson returns to the Mariners after rehabbing a hamstring but finds another player by the same last name in his old position. Shortstop Josh Wilson has filled in nicely in Jack's absence, batting .307 with a homer and 13 RBIs. Jack Wilson was batting .253 when he went on the DL and may have lost his starting job. The M's have hinted at keeping Josh at short, which will not go over well with Jack. So which Wilson will get the starting nod today?

Notable quotable

"If I get a nickel for every person that tells me to stay in Miami, I won't need to sign a contract."

Heat All-Star guard and free agent-to-be Dwyane Wade said during a charity event in Miami over the weekend.

Tips and notes

Who would have thought after the United States/Englad World Cup opener that both squads would be considering a goalkeeper change, albeit for very different reasons. U.S. goalie Tim Howard is being evaluated for the rib injury he suffured during Saturday's 1-1 draw England, which is still decideing whether to bench Robert Green for his gaffe in goal. The Brits are pondering a switch to David "Calamity" James while the U.S. may be forced to use Marcus Hahnemann after Howard's injury is evaluated on Monday. The changes could have a big impact on the outcome of their games on Friday.

Tiger Woods will be paired with Ernie Els and Lee Westwood for the first two rounds of this week's U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. Sounds more like the final Sunday pairing for a major. That should be good news for backers of Tiger, who seems to elevate his level of play based on his partners. It's also the right course for Woods, who rolled to a 15-stroke victory the last time the U.S. Open was held at Pebble Beach in 2000. Of course, much has changed for Tiger since that time, but he may be surrounded by the right people at the right place to get his derailed career back oin course.

Joe Gibbs has always been a disciple of teamwork, even if his charges have a strange way of showing it. His drivers, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch, have won seven of the last 10 NASCAR Sprint Cup races despite the fact that Busch threatened to kill Hamlin three weeks ago at Charlotte. NASCAR, perhaps the biggest monopoly in all of sports, has a problem with teams monopolizing victory lane. Expect a non-Gibbs winner next week at Sonoma.
