Many US states have a 5 cent deposit. It kind of is a failure ( IMO). It has become too difficult to pump the cans/ bottles through the machines in the US.

The fucking Machines clog up usually after putting 10 cans in them, then you have to get the CS department at the Supermarket to send some numnutz to empty the machine. I can't spend 30 minutes trying to get $5 for my deposits.

huge failure, most Gringos just throw deposit cans and bottles in the trash, now !

It started in 1980 in CT. The then 5cent deposit ( then) was like a 2010 quarter, I'd pick up a case of beer empties if somebody left them at the beach, worth returning for the deposit...then, not now !

I'd pick up a discarded case of bottles for $6 deposit ( now), but not $1.20.

Most people just throw them in the trash here in Michigan, and it's 10 cents per can/bottle. Huge failure is indeed what the current system is.

It really is a waste. I collected all my bottles in 12 trash bags and then had my brother take them back and I'd split the profit with him. He was so frustrated because the machines kept filling up that I agreed to let him keep all the money and he said it wasn't even worth doing for 100% of the money.

OMG,

I was gonna start a thread on this the other day.

We have a Black bin for Garbage

A blue bin for recycling

A green bin for kitchen waste such as egg shells, meat waste, kitchen waste etc. (in toronto i beleive even diapers are supposed to go here)

we have green bags for garden waste.

They pick up the green kitchen waste every week.

The Garbage every 2 weeks

Recycling every 2 weeks.

Its pretty much a full time job keeping it all organized.

There is also strict limits to the amount of waste you can throw out, but you can also buy tags and attach them to bags to be able to throw out extra bags.

I'm old nearing 47.

In CT this deposit stuff started around 1980....perhaps Jan 1st 1980 ? I worked at a grocery store from 1979-1982 ( high school years for me). It was chaos back then, no crushing machines. Customers brought the shitty empties back to a bottle sorting area, we hand sorted it by manufacturer ( Like pepsi, coke, AB, Miller, etc.). Hugely inefficient and resulted in a backroom full of smelly bags of garbage, awaiting inefficent methods of hauling via 18 wheelers.

These "modern" machines suck too. They are so inefficient that many people will just throw the cans away as regular trash. I'd recycle for free as I am Green, but not possible with my stupids wife. Recycling is not allowed.

yeah beer bottles are 10 cents per bottle.

Cans are 5 cents, but not all provinces do the cans thing.

In quebec some of the cans were 20 cent deposit.

I'd kind of guess that most Canadians would voluntarily recycle stuff without deposits. I would recycle everything possible, but can't with a present wife that thinks nothing of littering.

deposit is kind of low, now that you are in Toronto, eh ?

Do you return beverage cans for 5 cents in Ontario ? If you recycle them, that is just as green.

I could almost support a 50 cent per can/ bottle deposit, once you have your stock of needed beverages the deposit is forgotten, and any litter will get picked up by scavengers. I've seen people dumpster-dive for 5 cent cans

It is tough. I like to buy something like a case of 24 Heineken bottles, replace each bottle ( in box) as you consume them, return to the Packie next time you buy, that is doable, but only $1.20

Filling up the bed of your truck with assorted cans and bottles and trying to pump them through the redemption machines at Stop& Shop......

might only net you $6/ hour ?, and that's not dumpster diving for cans, that's cleaning out a garage full of cans/ bottles.

I think I'd charge to haul it.

I thought Canada just buried their bottles and cans in the 6 feet of snow still on the ground.

Really? Not on the west side of the state. They all get returned.

What did you do for the last 10+ years ?

It is somewhat -EV, maybe like $4/ hr pumping my own empties thru the machines at a pace that expects the machines to jam after 10 cans.

I'm not happy with doing it.

Here in NY they just added 5 cent deposit to water bottles also. They just did it hoping people don't bring them back and they can pocket the nickel to add to their budget. Its got nothing to do with the environment nowadays, its basically another tax that they hope they keep if people are too lazy to redeem the deposit. I never used to bring back bottles but I do now. I give NY too much in taxes now, they are not getting more of my money.

CT recently added it to water also. Non carbonated bevs exempt ( like iced tea, gatorade, etc.) , except water.

Problem is returning the containers for 5 cents is like working for $5/hour with the problems at the redemption machines ....like full bin, call attendant.

Levistep found this out. I can't really take them to one place, no redemption center that takes everything is anywhere near me.

Half of my friends in CT just chuck the containers in the trash. I would recycle everything if I could but that cannot be done with my present wife.
