Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Indians at Pittsburgh Pirates (-110, 8)

We wouldn’t want to be working in the Pirates’ sales department right now. How the hell would you be able to convince Pittsburgh citizens that this weekend’s series between their miserable Pirates and the equally poor Indians is worth paying to see?

Maybe you tell them this is a great chance to see their team beat the snot out of another MLB club. Now there’s something you don’t see every day.

This National League road trip couldn’t come at a worse time for Cleveland designated hitter Travis Hafner. The slugger hit .321 in May and has four homers and eight RBIs in his last seven games but manager Manny Acta says there’s no chance he’ll play any first base.

That means one of the Indians’ best hitters will be reduced to a situational pinch hitter.

Pick: Pirates

Oakland A’s at St. Louis Cardinals (-240, 8)

How crazy are things in Oakland these days? Well Conor Jackson, a corner outfielder or first baseman, hit leadoff for the A’s on Wednesday night.

Oakland manager Bob Geren doesn’t have a designated hitter spot to throw Jack Cust or Mike Sweeney in, so he was forced to put both in the outfield with Jackson in left and leading off.

“Obviously you’re going to get your opportunities in the three-, four – or five-hole to drive guys in,” Jackson told the San Jose Mercury News. “But I think my forte is getting on base and letting guys drive me in.”

He did just that early on against Cubs starter Ryan Dempster, leading off with a single and eventually scoring on a sac fly. Still, bettors shouldn’t feel overly optimistic about Oakland’s chances of putting up a lot of runs, especially with Chris Carpenter on the mound.

Pick: Under

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Jason Hammel, Colorado Rockies (4-3, 4.53 ERA)

The Rockies right-handed hurler is 3-0 in his last four trips to the mound, allowing only three runs in those starts. He’s posted back-to-back shutout efforts heading into Friday, most recently giving up just six hits in eight innings in a 1-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. He also has 22 strikeouts over those last four starts.

Scott Kazmir, Los Angeles Angels (6-5, 5.26 ERA)

Kazmir picked up his third straight win despite lasting only five innings in a 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers last weekend. The southpaw struck out five batters, giving up only two runs on three hits. Kazmir has allowed just four runs in his last 117 innings of work but must watch his pitch count in his Wrigley Field debut.

Stephen Strasburg, Washington Nationals (2-0, 2.19 ERA)

While it’s tough to tag Strasburg as a true streaking pitcher after just two starts, there’s no denying just how stellar the Nats top prospect has been. He’s given up just four hits and three earned runs – two home runs – in his big-league debuts while striking out 22 batters in just over 12 innings of work.

Slumping

Joe Blanton, Philadelphia Phillies (1-5, 7.28 ERA)

The Phillies righty has been garbage in recent starts, giving up 23 earned runs in his last four trips to the mound. Blanton hasn’t won since mid May and is coming off a 10-2 shelling from the Boston Red Sox in which he gave up nine runs on 13 hits including two home runs in just four innings of action.

Debuting

Felix Doubront, Boston Red Sox (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

The left hander from Venezuela gets the nod for his first MLB start in place of the injured Daisuke Matsuzka. Doubront was 4-0 with a 2.51 ERA in Double-A and 2-1 with a slim 1.08 ERA in Triple-A this summer. He has been with Boston since 2005, making 109 minor league starts and boasting a 42-30 record with a 3.55 ERA.

This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On June 18 in Baseball History...

1938 - Babe Ruth is signed as a Dodgers coach for the rest of the season. He is in uniform for batting demonstrations the following day.

1953 - Red Sox rookie outfielder Gene Stephens becomes the only A.L. player to get three hits in the same inning, as Boston scores 17 in the seventh inning in a 23-3 romp over Detroit. The Red Sox send 23 to the plate in the seventh, getting 14 hits and six walks — 20 runners — in succession before third baseman George Kell flies out to end it.

1960 - The Giants, a big favorite to win the pennant in a preseason poll of writers taken by The Sporting News, change managers, replacing Bill Rigney with Tom Sheehan. Horace Stoneham's team is 33-25 and trails only Pittsburgh. At 66 years, two months, and 18 days, Sheehan is the oldest rookie manager in major-league history.

1962 - Hank Aaron of the Braves reaches the left-center field bleachers at the Polo Grounds, the second player to find the center field bleachers in two days and only the third ever. The Braves win 7-1.

1972 - By a 5-3 vote, the U.S. Supreme Court confirms lower court rulings in the Curt Flood case, upholding baseball's exemption from antitrust laws and the legitimacy of its reserve clause. Its decision is narrowly construed, however, and leaves the way open for legislation or collective bargaining to undercut the reserve system.

1975 - Boston rookie Fred Lynn drives in ten runs with three home runs, a triple, and a single during a 15-1 drubbing of Detroit. Lynn's 16 total bases tie an A.L. record.

1976 - Commissioner Bowie Kuhn voids the A's sales, totaling $3.5 million, of Joe Rudi and Rollie Fingers to the Red Sox and Vida Blue to the Yankees, saying they are 'not in the best interest of baseball.' A's owner Charlie Finley files a $10 million damage suit against Kuhn, and will refuse to use any of the three players until June 27.

1977 - New York's Reggie Jackson loafs after a fly ball during a 10-4 loss to Boston and is taken out by manager Billy Martin. Jackson and Martin nearly come to blows in the dugout as national television cameras watch.

1986 - California's Don Sutton becomes the 19th pitcher in ML history to win 300 games, beating the Rangers 3-1 on a three-hitter.

1995 - Tigers manager Sparky Anderson moves into third place on the all-time list with his 2,158th win. He passes Bucky Harris with the 10-8 victory over Baltimore.

Tips and Trends
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Angels at Chicago Cubs [2:20 PM ET]

Angels: Los Angeles continues to grind along in the American League West, as they have a winning record both at home and on the road this season. The Angels are 37-32 SU this year, trailing Texas by 2 games in their division. The Angels are +4.50 and +8.71 units both SU and on the RL respectively this year. Los Angeles had a short stay at home, as they were on the road for quite some time prior to their last series, before heading to Chicago to face the Cubs. Offensively, the Angels have been quite streaky this year in that they either tear the cover off the ball or they don't plate any runs at all. Lefty Scott Kazmir has been lights out of late, as he's a perfect 3-0 with an ERA of 2.12 and a WHIP of 1.35 in his past 3 starts. The Angels are 4-0 in their last 4 games against a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15. Los Angeles is 9-2 in their last 11 interleague road games against a right-handed starter. The Angels are 11-4 in their last 15 games against a right-handed starter. Los Angeles is 4-0 in Kazmir's last 4 road starts. The Angels are 4-1 in Kazmir's last 5 starts overall.

Angels are 4-0 in their last 4 interleague road games vs. a team with a losing record.
Over is 6-1 in Angels last 7 interleague road games.

Key Injuries - SS Erick Aybar (knee) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)

Cubs (-139, O/U na): Chicago has been getting some great pitching performances of late, as they've held their opponents to 2 runs or fewer in 4 of their past 5 games. As a result, Chicago has won 3 of their past 4 games overall to get to 30-36 on the season. The Cubs are now 17-16 at home this year, a record they need to continue to improve. As poorly as the Cubs started the season, they only trail the National League Central leading Reds by 6.5 games. Chicago is still a terrible team to back from a betting standpoint, as they are -15.41 and -7.89 units both SU and on the RL this year. P Carlos Silva will look to keep up his unbelievable season, as he is 8-1 with an ERA of 2.89 and a WHIP of 1.08. Silva is likely to be an All-Star this year, beyond anyone's wildest thoughts heading into the year. The Cubs are 7-1 in their last 8 games against a left-handed starter. Chicago is 3-9 in their last 12 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. The Cubs are 10-1 in Silva's last 11 starts overall. The Cubs are 7-1 in Silva's last 8 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance. Chicago is 4-0 in Silva's last 4 starts during game 1 of a series.

Cubs are 2-8 last 10 interleague games against a team with a winning record.
Under is 7-3 last 10 home games against a team with a winning record.

Key Injuries - 3B Aramis Ramirez (thumb) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4

New York Mets at New York Yankees [7:05 PM ET]

Mets: New York has literally been the Amazing Mets of late, as they have been the hottest team in baseball for the past month. The Mets have won 6 straight, and 9 of their past 10 games to come within a half game from the National League East lead. The Mets are 37-28 overall this year, trailing Atlanta by just a half game in their division. The Mets have already won 2 of 3 games earlier this season against their crosstown rivals. New York has been mixing great offensive performances with great pitching performances of late. The Mets have held their opponents to 1 run or fewer in 5 of their past 10 games, while their offense has scored 26 runs in their past 3 games. Lefty P Hisanori Takahashi is 5-2 with an ERA of 3.48 and a WHIP of 1.33 this season. The Mets are 4-0 in their last 4 games as an underdog. Yankees (-180, O/U 9.5): New York has been playing great baseball of late, as they have caught the Rays for the best record in baseball. The Yankees are 41-24 SU this year, thanks to an impressive 23-8 home record. New York is +5.55 and +10.46 units both SU and on the RL respectively this year. The Yankees have scored 29 runs in their past 4 games, proving how dangerous their offense can be. Right-hander Javier Vazquez has really turned his season around of late, as he is a perfect 3-0 with an ERA of 2.57 and a WHIP of 0.76 in his past 3 starts. Vazquez still has a season long ERA over 5.00, but if he keeps his current form that will change quickly. The Yankees are 58-16 in their last 74 games as a home favorite. New York is 43-16 in their last 59 home games against a left-handed starter. The Yankees are 54-21 in their last 75 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. New York is 4-1 in Vazquez's last 5 starts as a home favorite of -151 to -200. The Yankees are 4-1 in Vazquez's last 5 starts.

Daily Sports Roundup: June 18

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Nationals play host to the White Sox, while the United States takes on Slovenia and England battles Algeria in World Cup action.

Chasing the World Cup . . .

It's Germany vs. Serbia, Slovenia vs. the United States, and England vs. Algeria on the World Cup schedule for Friday. The Americans (EVEN) will be looking to build on their 1-1 tie with England when they take on Slovenia (+260) on Friday (draw odds are +230); Slovenia beat Algeria 1-0 in their tourney opener. England is pegged as the -500 favorite against Algeria (+1200), with draw odds of +500, while Germany is at -167 against Serbia (+450), with draw odds of +265. Germany pounded Australia 4-0 in their first game of the World Cup, and Serbia was blanked 1-0 by Ghana last game.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Angels and Cubs will meet in interleague action at Wrigley Field on Friday afternoon, with Los Angeles' Scott Kazmir (6-5, 5.27 ERA) set to take on Chicago's Carlos Silva (8-1, 2.89 ERA). Lefthander Kazmir is back on track for the Angels, having picked up victories in each of his last three starts. Kazmir beat the Dodgers in his last trip to the mound, giving up just two earned runs on three hits over his five innings of work. Righthander Silva was tagged with his first loss of the season in his start against the White Sox last game despite giving up just two runs in seven innings.

Stephen Strasburg (2-0, 2.19 ERA) will look to stay unbeaten when the Nats host the ChiSox on Friday, while the rest of the MLB schedule has Milwaukee at Colorado, Arizona at Detroit, the Mets at the Yankees, Cleveland at Pittsburgh, Minnesota at Philadelphia, San Francisco at Toronto, the Dodgers at Boston, Tampa Bay at Florida, Kansas City at Atlanta, Texas at Houston, Oakland at St. Louis, Baltimore at San Diego, and Cincinnati at Seattle. Johnny Cueto (6-1, 4.50 ERA) will take on Cliff Lee (4-3, 2.88 ERA) in that Reds/Mariners matchup. Righthander Cueto beat the Royals last game despite surrendering five runs over his six innings pitched. Lefthander Lee is coming off a loss to the Padres in which he allowed three runs over seven innings.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the WNBA schedule for Friday has Seattle at New York, Tulsa at Minnesota, Connecticut at Los Angeles, and San Antonio at Phoenix. The Silver Stars (3-6 straight-up, 3-5-1 against-the-spread) will be looking to bounce back from a 90-83 road loss to Atlanta in their last contest; Sophia Young had 24 points for San Antonio in that contest. The Mercury (5-5 SU, 4-6 ATS) thumped Tulsa 116-84 in their last game, with Diana Taurasi and Candice Dupree each pouring in 18 points for Phoenix. <!-- / message -->

Friday's six-pack

-- I'll go to my grave saying that basketball is poorly suited for series that are best-of-7; when teams know all the opponent's plays by heart, it makes the games like practices. Much less attractive ball to watch.

-- I'm thinking it'll be a long time before we see the Celtics in the Finals again; their nucleus is old by NBA standards, except for Rondo.

-- Any all-time NBA teams that don't have Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the top five are asinine. He is one of the five best players ever, for sure.

-- College World Series starts Friday; TCU is only team in Omaha for first time, but strangely, UCLA (0-4) has never won a CWS game.

-- Looks like the NFL is going to 18 regular season and two preseason games, which will be a big improvement over the current 16/4.

-- Eldrick Woods didn't get any birdies Thursday, is five behind leaders at Pebble Beach; how weird will it be if he is never dominant again?

***********************************************

Friday's List of 13 (+3): Our Friday look at NL teams........

16) Arizona-- Traded Conor Jackson for needed bullpen help, but they've scored total of five runs in losing last four games vs lefty starters. Would it be horrible if they admitted their mistake and brought Bob Melvin back to manage this team? They've been terrible since he left.

15) Pittsburgh-- Worst record in NL, but promotion of prospects Tabata, Lincoln, Alvarez provide hope for depressed franchise. They also had to cut their highest priced player (Iwamura) who could wind up helping one of the contenders if he decides to become a free agent.

14) Houston-- Astros have to use Oakland's Haren-to-Arizona trade as a blueprint for how to restock their farm system. They've got to trade Roy Oswalt in order to improve down the road. Mills has this team playing as well as their limited talent allows. They desperately need more talent.

13) Milwaukee-- Randy Wolf averages 19.6 called strikes a start, which is a lot in today's game; his brother is a major league ump. Wonder if there are any umps who don't even know that Wolf's brother is an umpire. I'd doubt it, but since not everyone knows the Infield Fly Rule, anything is possible. If Wolf's turn to start came on a day when Jim Wolf was doing the plate, would major league baseball allow this to happen?

12) Cubs-- Lou Piniella won Rookie of Year for Royals in 1969, when he was on his third major league team-- he played briefly for '64 Orioles and '68 Indians. Sweet Lou was also selected in two different expansion drafts and not many guys can say that.

11) Washington-- OK, I underestimated the average price of a ticket for a Nationals' game; it is $51.46. So if Strasburg draws an extra 20,000 fans to a home game, thats an additional $1,029,200, before any concessions are sold or parking/souvenirs are paid for. Kid's earning his money.

10) Florida-- Major league baseball ain't easy; Michael Stanton just went 0-10 in his first three home games with the Marlins, who are 31-35 with an owner who thinks they're the '84 Tigers. Bad news for the manager, who would be in high demand if Mr Luria were to stupidly fire him.

9) Colorado-- Ubaldo Jimenez has a 1.15 ERA on June 18, and thats with him giving up three runs in six IP in a monsoon in Denver last week. Even at 34-32, Rockies are in 4th place in a tough five-team division. Gonzalez' throw to the plate Tuesday night was an absolute thing of beauty.

8) Cincinnati-- Argument exists in baseball circles as to whether there is such a thing as clutch hitting, or instead, will a .269 hitter continue to hit .269 in any given scenario? As a coach or a fan, I know I have a preference as to who I'd rather see perform in key situations, but there are people who think that sort of thing is random. I would disagree with them.

7) Philadelphia-- Here's how stupid the save rules are: A's lead Cubs 2-1 in 8th inning Thursday; Cubs have bases loaded, one out. A's bring closer Bailey in; he gets sac fly to right and strikeout to put out fire, just super job of keeping A's in game, but he gets a blown save, because the tying run scored while he was pitching. No common sense whatsoever.

6) St Louis-- Cardinals scored zero or one run in half of Garcia's 12 starts; they're 5-1 in his other six outings. After consulting with friends who are Cardinal fans, we're ready to declare Mark McGwire a bad hitting coach-- bring Hal McRae back, so Holliday/Pujols can start raking again.

5) Dodgers-- Last time the All-Star Game was in Kansas City was 1973; Catfish Hunter broke his thumb trying to field a ball hit back at him, in a game where 15 future Hall of Famers played. Manny Ramirez returns to Boston this week; the natives should be in a swell mood after the Celtics lost Game 7 to the Lakers Thursday night.

4) Mets-- My dad is pleased with his red-hot team (17-6 in their last 23 games); just don't tell him they've been feasting on Orioles/Indians, two of the worst teams in baseball. Will they put up or shut up in the Bronx this weekend? I still want to know who thought Reyes should bat 3rd, or who thought Tatis was a better 1B than Ike Davis? No one's saying.

3) San Francisco-- Matt Cain has a 0.44 ERA in his last seven starts, with opposing batters hitting .147 against him in those games. Once they bring Bumgarner up, they're going to have a quality starting pitcher every night, which makes them very dangerous with an offense sparked by Sanchez, Posey and new leadoff hitter Torres.

2) San Diego-- Padres are tied with Dodgers, despite allowing 81 less runs than LA. Wouldn't you think Bud Black's success would make it easier for more former pitchers to become big league skippers? Right now, Black is the only one in major leagues. Tommy Lasorda was a pitcher, too.

1) Atlanta-- How will a guy like Bobby Cox fill void in his life after he's done managing in the big leagues? I mean, it has to be a really consuming job, right? What does he do next year, when there's no media to ask dumb questions (or good ones), no lineup cards to make out, no game to go to? It has to be a problem for some of these guys.

Bettors' best friend: Friday's wagering tips

Chicago-Washington: Nationals pitching prospect Stephen Strasburg is on the hill after winning his first two big-league starts. Strasburg has been a -200 and -187 favorite on the hill in those contests and should carry another lofty price tag against the White Sox.

Weather watch

Los Angeles Angels at Chicago Cubs: The forecast for Wrigley Field is calling for thundershowers to go along with the unpredictable wind in Chicago.

Tampa Bay Rays at Florida Marlins: Expect some thundershowers in this battle of Florida.

Who’s hot?

New York Mets: Heading into Thursday’s game against the Cleveland Indians, the Mets have won six straight games and nine of their last 10. New York faces the cross-town Yankees this weekend.

Detroit Tigers: The Tigers have won six straight games heading into their weekend series with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Who’s not?

Pittsburgh Pirates: The Bucs are winless in their last 10 games heading into Thursday’s finale with the Chicago White Sox. Pittsburgh is at home to the Cleveland Indians this weekend.

Tulsa Shock: The Shock have dropped three straight games on the road heading into Friday’s contest in Minnesota. Tulsa is just 1-3 on the road and 3-6 SU and ATS on the season.

Key stat

0 – The United States has never come back to win a World Cup match in which they trailed since 1930, making it even more important that U.S. jump out to an early lead against Slovenia Friday.

Notable quote

"Rooney can say what he wants. It's his problem. We will play to win this game. We want to qualify as well." - Algeria defender Madjid Bougherra after hearing that England’s Wayne Rooney was predicting an English win in their matchup Friday.

Injury watch

Rafael Furcal, Los Angeles Dodgers: The shortstop has left the Dodgers to be with an ailing family member and will miss at least the first two games against the Boston Red Sox this weekend. Taking Furcal’s spot in the lineup is Jamey Carroll.

Game of the day

New York Mets at New York Yankees

Tips and notes

Manny back in Fenway: Manny Ramirez makes his return to Boston this weekend. The former Red Sox slugger will likely DH for the Dodgers and will likely be treated well by die-hard Boston fans. He’s hitting .295 BA with seven home runs in 2010.

Sweet 16: A Germany victory against Serbia Friday would insure the Germans a spot in the knockout round of the World Cup. Germany has at least made the final 16 in every World Cup tournament since 1954.

Parker out?: Los Angeles Sparks star forward Candace Parker is doubtful for Friday’s game against the Connecticut Sun. Parker separated her shoulder in the Sparks win over Minnesota Sunday and has been limited in practice this week. Parker is scoring over 20 points and grabbing more than 10 rebounds a night.
