1. Argentina
Two wins from two tells its own story. Having opened with a 1-0 victory over Nigeria, they thumped South Korea 4-1 in their second game. Classy forward line makes them real contenders.

2. Brazil
The five-time winners were frustrated for 55 minutes against a North Korea side which proved tough to break down. Their defence was exposed at the end which will give rivals hope.

3. Netherlands
The two-time finalists should improve on a mediocre 2-0 win against an unadventurous Denmark. Hopefully, Arjen Robben will soon be back to add another dimension to their attack.

4. Germany
That impressive rout of Australia was followed up by a surprise defeat at the hands of Serbia. The Klose red card was key, but you'd still have expected more from Joachim Low's side.

5. Spain
The European champions will need to make changes if they are to win the World Cup. Lots of possession against Switzerland but no cutting edge. Jesus Navas looks a better bet than David Silva on the right.

6. Italy
Unconvincing in an opening 1-1 draw against Paraguay, but the Italians are notorious for hitting their straps after a slow start. Did improve markedly in second half.

7. Uruguay
Followed up a creditable 0-0 draw against France with an impressive 3-0 win over World Cup hosts South Africa and are now within touching distance of the next round.

8. Mexico
Held by hosts South Africa in their opener but really hit their straps to beat France in their second game, meaning a draw with Uruguay sends both teams through to the knockout stages.

9. Ghana
Showed they can perform without injured midfielder Michael Essien by defeating Serbia with a late penalty. Will need to improve their attack but in pole position to reach the last 16.

10. Chile
Saw off a poor Honduras side 1-0 in their opening game but really should have scored more such was their dominance. Will fancy their chances of progressing from Group H.

11. England
Fabio Capello's men produced an abject performance in a 0-0 draw with Algeria but will go through to the last 16 if they beat Slovenia, although even a draw might be enough.

12. Switzerland
Sensational result against Spain but still look limited. Spent most of the match defending but look a threat on the counter-attack and have a great chance of making the last 16.

13. Serbia
Much improved in shocking fancied Germany, even if was against 10 men. Rode their luck when Podolski missed a penalty, but Milos Krasic showed his star quality.

14. United States
Looked down and out when trailing 2-0 at half-time to Slovenia in their second outing but rallied to take a point on the back of an impressive opening-game draw with England.

15. South Korea
Very impressive performance as they defeated Greece 2-0 first up but came off second best against a classy Argentine side. Will still fancy their chances of progressing, though.

16. Japan
Keisuke Honda's first-half winner against a poor Cameroon side puts the Japanese in pole position to qualify alongside the Netherlands from Group E.

17. Paraguay
Battling 1-1 draw against defending champions Italy leaves Paraguay well-placed to qualify from a weak Group F ahead of Slovakia and New Zealand.

18. Ivory Coast
Perhaps just shaded a dreary opening clash against Portugal, but now deadlocked in the battle to claim second spot and a probable last-16 clash with Spain.

19. Portugal
Desperately disappointing in an awful opener against Ivory Coast, Cristiano Ronaldo and co now face a probable GD shoot-out to reach the last 16.

20. Slovenia
Built on their victory over Algeria by moving into a 2-0 half-time lead against the USA but were pegged back and had to settle for a point ahead of their last game with England.

21. Slovakia
Were just seconds away from going straight to the top of their group when New Zealand snatched a draw against them in their opener. Look short of Italy and Paraguay.

22. Greece
Bounced back from a dreadful performance in losing 2-0 against South Korea by coming from 1-0 down to beat Nigeria in their second game to keep qualifying hopes alive.

23. Algeria
Exceeded expectations with a spirited goalless draw against England which has left them with a chance of getting through to the knockout phase if they defeat the United States.

24. France
Left needing a favour after two poor performances in drawing with Uruguay and losing to Mexico. Need to beat South Africa and hope the two teams they've failed to beat don't draw.

25. New Zealand
Solid defensively but looked destined for an opening-game defeat to Slovakia before Winston Reid popped up. Still have it all to do to make it out of the group, though.

26. North Korea
Proved a tough nut to crack in their first finals appearance since 1966. Billed as the whipping boys, after a narrow 2-1 defeat to Brazil they have genuine hopes of qualifying.

27. Denmark
Played well in the first half against Holland until they were undone by a comical own goal at the start of the second half. Looked pedestrian after that and will need to improve to progress.

28. Nigeria
Only time will tell how costly Sani Kaita's red card against Greece was, but it could easily have ended their involvement in South Africa. They led 1-0 but lost 2-1 for a second straight defeat.

29. South Africa
Having drawn with Mexico, the hosts really needed to beat Uruguay but instead they slumped to a 3-0 defeat and their hopes of reaching the next round now look slim.

30. Australia
Australia are left shell-shocked after a 4-0 defeat by Germany during which Tim Cahill was sent off. Will have to raise their game against Ghana and Serbia if they are to get out of the group.

31. Cameroon
Desperately disappointing in their opening 1-0 defeat to Japan, the African heavyweights now face must-win games against Holland and Denmark.

32. Honduras
Lost their opening game 1-0 against Chile but it could easily have been a drubbing. Second best in that one and with Spain and Switzerland to come, an early exit is on the cards.
