South American Sides as of Noon EDT Monday, June 21st.

Uraguay 1-0-1 Group A advances. Big strong group will not rollover in the next life.

Argentina 2-0-0 Group B Advances. ( La Albiceleste have serious chance to play for Holy Grail).

Paraguay 1-0-1 Group F Should Advance (only side in group with a win).

Brazil 2-0-0 Group G Advances. (Many predicting that The Little Canaries will take home the hardware).

Chile 2-0-0 Group H Advances. Nice surprise but one and done in Big Boy Round.

Mexico and Hounduras are from Latin America..

Now look at Europe as of Noon EDT on Monday, June 21st.:

France 0-1-1 Group A See Ya wouldn't want to be ya.

Greece 1-1-0 Group B in battle with S.Korea for 2nd spot. Winner one and done in WC Part Dos.

Slovenia 1-0-1 Group C thanks to Ref in need of cash Win MIGHT advance only to be devoured immediately in The Show.

England 0-0-2 Group C One goal in tournament to date. Time for Rooney Tunes to step up or it's Fish and Chips two weeks early for the Brits.

Germany 1-1-0 Group D already knocked off by Serbia has Show down on Wed. with Ghana.

Serbia 1-1-0 Group D beaten by Ghana in life and death stuggle with Germany to advance.

Netherlands 2-0-0 Group E Class of the Euros to date. Could they?? - Nah!!...

Denmark 1-1-0 Group E Crucial match with Japan on Thursday for shot at group of 16. Sneaky bastards in case you were wondering.

Italy 0-0-2 Group F Play Slovakia on Thursday for their meatballs. I hope they win because they draw La Oranje when it counts.

Slovakia 0-1-1 Group F A win against The Azzurri would be epic.

Portugal 1-0-1 Group G Advances behind Brazil after flexing muscles vs N. Koreans. Unless Spain wins out the only kind of geese that don't fly have an easy shot at making it to final eight.

Switzerland 1-1-0 Group H Can the little country that could send La Roja home early. Who woulda thunk it.

Spain 0-1-0 Group H Plays game 2 today vs creampuff Honduras. Has a showdown with Chile on Friday for spot in final 16 with Brazil waiting for them as opening act.

Ya gotta luv La Copa Mundial...:103631605

South American teams have been very solid. Got to give credit, where credit is due. It's still very early in the tournament. It will be very interesting to see how European vs. South American teams will match up in the playoffs.

PS: Voodoo7 - interesting information but fairly moot. Chances are very high a team from either continent will win again in 2010....

Could be some awesome matchups in the 1st round of elimination games:
Possible matchups include Spain vs Brazil , Italy vs Netherlands or maybe England vs Germany.

Netherlands kind of play like Germany did in the past: Not great offensive football which gets everyone excited, but highly successful. Vastly improved defense compared to past Dutch teams and Robben will give them a huge boost in the next rounds, esp. since he seems to play way better next to Snijder than van der Vaart does.

Oh definitely. Was trying to point out 1 will break the deadlock this year.

Given the results so far the 2nd round match ups are going to pit some very good teams against each other sooner then expected. If the confederation cup didn't prove it then the early matches have in that the conditions in South Africa are much different then expected.

Clean sweep for South America at WCup.

PRETORIA, South Africa — Chile's progress to the second round of the World Cup means that every South American team made it out of the group stage for the first time in twenty years.
Chile, despite a 2-1 defeat to Spain Friday, joined Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay in the round of 16.

That's the first time each South American representative has done so since the World Cup in Italy in 1990.

However the achievement of the class of 2010 is superior to that of 1990 when Brazil was the only team to top its group while Argentina, Colombia and Uruguay all progressed despite finishing third.

This time, all the South American sides bar Chile topped their groups.

The 1990 tournament had 24 teams in six groups, with the four best third-placed sides going into the round of 16. Since 1998 when the tournament was expanded to 32 teams, only the top two in each group go through.

It's possible that South America will make up half the quarterfinal lineup in a week's time as the only all-South American clash in the round of 16 is Brazil-Chile. Uruguay faces South Korea, while Argentina confronts Mexico in the second round for the second straight World Cup, and Paraguay takes on Japan.

Add in the United States and there's a distinct American feel to the round of 16. Honduras was the only team from the Americas not to progress from the group stage.

In stark contrast to South America's achievements, Europe has suffered its worst showing in the group stage since the World Cup was expanded to 32 teams. Only six of its 13 participants made it through the group stage, with 2006 finalists France and Italy the biggest casualties.

Europe's numbers will definitely be reduced to three by the quarterfinal stage as they all play each other. Germany takes on England, while Spain faces off against Portugal, and Slovakia confronts the Netherlands.

Though Europe's teams may not be faring as strongly as they usually do, it will be no surprise if one of them makes it to the final at Soccer City in Johannesburg on July 11.

Europe has had a finalist at every World Cup since the second tournament in 1934. In 1950 there was no final as such, though the last match between Brazil and Uruguay involved the only two teams who could win the trophy <emdash /> Uruguay shocked the footballing world and 200,000 Brazilians by winning the match and the tournament.

However, history suggest the winning team will be South American. No European side has won the World Cup outside the confines of its continent. Brazil is the only team ever to win outside its continent, in Sweden in 1958 and in Japan/South Korea in 2002.

Great start by the South Americans, but not looking so good anymore now, I guess ^<<^
Who would have thought that the worst team from South America according to their qualifying games would be the only team to reach the semis. Back to back world cups where neither ARG nor BRA reach the round of the last 4.... :ohno:
