Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Arizona Diamondbacks (150, 10.5)

The Yankees had an eventful Subway Series with stars Derek Jeter and A-Rod suffering from injuries and pop star Lady Gaga making an surprise visit to the clubhouse.

She reportedly wore an unbuttoned Yankees jersey and a bikini bottom while fondling her breasts and drinking whiskey in the clubhouse following Friday's loss. Maybe she inspired the Bombers to win the next two over the hated Mets, but the circus ended Sunday.

Now the Yankees face a cross-country flight that more resembles an aeromedical evacuation mission. A-Rod and catcher Jorge Posada are still hindered by injuries and won't be able to play at DH. Struggling starter A.J. Burnett gets the green light despite getting hit in the foot by a liner in his last outing on Wednesday.

"I'll be ready to go Monday. Nothing hurt. It felt fine. ... It's night and day better than the last two day,." said Burnett, who stayed in the game and felt no immediate pain. "The next morning, I woke up, took my first step and almost fell down, so I'll never laugh at hitters again who foul a ball off their foot. It's not fun."

Meanwhile the Diamondbacks return home, where they actually have a winning record this season, healthier than they've been all season. Despite their recent losing slide, they are catching the Yankees at a good time and a nice price.

Pick: Diamondbacks

Cincinnati Reds at Oakland A's (-120, 8)

This 20th anniversary rematch of the 1990 World Series looks nothing like the Bash Brothers vs. the Big Red Machine. Medicated or not, the old guys could hit.

The A's have scored only 14 runs in their past five games, losing four of five. The Reds have managed only 13 in their last seven, going 1-6 during that span.

The hitting challenged teams face respectable pitchers in Cincy's Mike Leake and Oakland's Gio Gonzalez and neither lineup has seen the opposing pitcher in action before.

This has all the makings for a low-scoring snoozer, unless they bring Mark McGwire and Eric Davis out of mothballs.

Pick: Under

Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Only three games on Monday and there aren’t really any hot arms to talk about. Here’s a look at a few starting hurlers for Monday who aren’t dealing their best stuff these days.

Slumping

Rodrigo Lopez (2-6, 4.70 ERA), Arizona Diamondbacks

If Arizona had any kind of depth to their starting rotation, Lopez would have been bumped to the bullpen a long time ago. The Mexican righty has delivered quality starts in just two of his last six appearances and Arizona is 0-5 in his last five outings.

A.J. Burnett (6-5, 4.33 ERA), New York Yankees

It’s been a month to forget for this Yanks starter. Burnett is 0-3 with a 9.00 ERA in 16 innings in June. Even worse, he’s been taken out of the park six times and he has almost as many walks (9) as he does strikeouts (10).

Gio Gonzalez (6-5, 4.21 ERA), Oakland A's

It’s been a rough go for the A’s most talented pitcher. Oakland is just 1-3 in Gonzalez’s last four trips to the mound and he owes a 6.04 ERA in June. He’s given up three home runs in his last two starts and he’s only pitched six or more innings once this month.

This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On June 21 in Baseball History...

1939 - The New York Yankees announce Lou Gehrig's retirement, based on the report that he has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The 36-year-old star will remain with the team as captain.

1950 - Joe DiMaggio gets his 2,000th hit, a seventh-inning single off the Indians Chick Pieretti, as the Yanks win 8-2. DiMaggio joins Luke Appling and Wally Moses as the only active players with 2,000 or more hits.

1964 - On Father's Day at Shea Stadium, Jim Bunning pitches the first perfect game (excluding Don Larsen's 1956 World Series effort and Harvey Haddix's 1959 extra-inning loss) since Charlie Robertson's on April 30, 1922. He also becomes the first pitcher to win no-hitters in both leagues and drives in 2 runs as Philadelphia beats the Mets 6-0. Gus Triandos becomes the first catcher to catch a no-hitter in each league. The Mets don't fare much better in the nightcap as rookie Rick Wise wins his first game and gives up just 3 hits for an 8-2 win.

1970 - Detroit's Cesar Gutierrez goes seven-for-seven to tie a record set in 1892 in a 12-inning, 9-8 win over Cleveland. Mickey Stanley's home run wins it for the Tigers. Gutierrez will collect just seven hits in all of 1971, and 128 hits for his career.

1971 - Indians slugger Ken Harrelson announces his retirement from baseball to join the pro golf tour.

1986 - Bo Jackson, college football's Heisman Trophy winner in 1985 and the first pick (by Tampa Bay) in the NFL draft, stuns observers nationwide by signing with the Kansas City Royals instead.

1989 - The Yankees trade outfielder Rickey Henderson back to the A's for journeymen pitchers Eric Plunk and Greg Cadaret and outfielder Luis Polonia.

Tips and Trends
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Arizona Diamondbacks [10:10 PM ET]

Yankees (-170, O/U 10.5): New York enters the week with the best record in all of baseball at 43-26 SU. The Yankees were able to exact their revenge on the Mets in a battle of surging clubs. New York has had great pitching of late, and also had some timely hitting in route to the best record. The Yankees are +3.33 and +10.45 units respectively, both SU and on the RL this year. New York is 18-16 SU on the road this year, with a chance to improve on that record when facing the lowly Diamondbacks. P A.J. Burnett will get the start tonight, as he tries to rebound from his brutal form of late. For the season, Burnett is 6-5 with an ERA of 4.33 and a WHIP of 1.40. The Yankees are 12-2 in their last 14 interleague games against a right-handed starter. New York is 54-23 in their last 77 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. The Yankees are 7-1 in Burnett's last 8 starts as a favorite of -151 to -200. New York is 2-5 in Burnett's last 7 road starts against a team with a losing record. The Yankees are 1-4 in Burnett's last 5 starts as a favorite.

Yankees are 19-7 last 26 games against a team with a winning percentage below .400%.
Under is 4-0 last 4 road games with the total set between 9 and 10.5 runs.

Key injuries - LF Marcus Thames (hamstring) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 7 (Side of the Day)

Diamondbacks: Arizona has really fallen on hard times, as they currently have the 2nd worst record in the National League at 27-43 SU this year. The good news is that they have a winning record at home this year, 17-16 SU. The bad news is the fact they get to face the Yankees at home in their next series. Arizona is -14.79 and -7.34 units both SU and on the RL this year. P Rodrigo Lopez will get the start tonight, as he is 2-6 with an ERA of 4.70 and a WHIP of 1.39 this season. The Diamondbacks are 5-1 in their last 6 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. The Diamondbacks are 7-15 in their last 22 games against a right-handed starter. Arizona is 1-6 in their last 7 interleague home games against a right-handed starter. The Diamondbacks are 1-4 in Lopez's last 5 starts as a home underdog. Arizona is 0-5 in Lopez's last 5 starts against a team with a winning record.

Diamondbacks are 2-12 last 14 interleague games as a favorite of +110 to +150.
Over is 6-1 last 7 interleague games as an underdog of +110 to +150.

Key injuries - None.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Cincinnati Reds at Oakland Athletics [10:05 PM ET]

Reds: Cincinnati is happy to get out of Seattle, as they only scored 1 run in their 3 games series with the Mariners. To no surprise, the Reds were swept by the lowly Mariners. Cincinnati has now lost 6 of their last 7 games, and have fallen further behind the Cardinals in the National League Central Division. The Reds are now 37-33 SU on the year, including 14-16 SU on the road. Cincinnati is -2.53 and -1.43 units both SU and on the RL this season. Luckily for the Reds, they send their young ace to the mound tonight in P Mike Leake. Leake is 5-1 this year, with an ERA of 3.02 and a WHIP of 1.40. The Reds are 16-7 in their last 23 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. The Reds are 8-21 in their last 29 interleague road games against a left-handed starter. Cincinnati is 1-4 in their last 5 games against a left-handed starter. The Reds are 1-4 in Leake's last 5 starts with the total set between 7 and 8.5 runs.

Reds are 0-7 last 7 games as an underdog.
Under is 5-0-1 last 6 road games against a team with a losing record.

Key injuries - C Ryan Hanigan (thumb) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 2

Athletics (-120, O/U 8): Oakland has lost 7 of their last 10 games, but this team is happy after their latest game. Oakland beat the favored Cardinals yesterday in their final road game of a road trip. Back at home, Oakland will look to improve on their season long record of 34-37 SU. The Athletics trail the Rangers by 8.5 games in the American League West Division. The Athletics are -1.01 units and -7.28 units both SU and on the RL respectively this season. Lefty Gio Gonzalez will take the mound tonight, as he looks to beat the Reds. Gonazalez is 6-5 this year, with an ERA of 4.21 and a WHIP of 1.36. The Athletics are 4-1 in their last 5 home games against a right-handed starter. The Athletics are 3-7 in their last 10 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. Oakland is 6-0 in Gonzalez's last 6 starts as a home favorite. Oakland is 5-0 in Gonzalez's last 5 starts as a favorite of -110 to -150. The Athletics are 2-6 in Gonzalez's last 8 starts against a team with a winning record.

Athletics are 12-3 last 15 games as a home favorite of -110 to -150.
Under is 20-6 last 26 home games against a team with a winning record.

Key injuries - C Kurt Suzuki (rest) is questionable.

13) According to Don Best.com, if you bet $100 on Graeme McDowell on Wednesday to win US Open, you now have a ticket worth $7,095.

12) Saturday's Rays-Marlins game was especially strange; Florida batted out of order because the umpire misunderstood Fredi Gonzalez when he gave him his lineup changes. Why did they misunderstand him? Because of the noise from 15,000 free vuvuzelas given out as a promotional item by the Marlins. Florida wound up losing the game in 11 innings, 9-8.

11) Tampa Bay is batting rookie catcher Jaso leadoff; best as their people can tell, Jaso is first rookie catcher to bat leadoff since Bruce Kimm did it for one game in 1976. Kimm was Mark Fidrych's personal catcher back when the Bird was the Stephen Strasburg of his generation.

10) Pirates have a mascot race much like the Sausage Races in Milwaukee; one of the guys who mans the pierogi costume criticzed the team's moves (imagine that, criticizing the Pirates) and the team fired him. So much for free speech in the Steel City. Maybe the pierogi should be the GM, its not like he could do any worse than the meathead who is the current GM.

9) Phillies scored total of 15 runs in Roy Halladay's last 8 starts (2-6).

8) Trevor Cahill is 6-0, 2.62 in his last seven starts, and probably has a leg up on being Oakland's representative in the All-Star Game.

7) Reds lost six of last seven games, scoring one run in three games over the weekend at Safeco Field. Losing to Felix Hernandez is one thing, but getting blanked by Ryan Rowland-Smith is very bad news.

6) Some early college football spreads have been posted, one of which is Utah as a 3.5-point favorite over Pitt in a Week 1A matchup in very early September. Thats a Thursday night TV game that should be fun.

5) Remember former Florida QB Chris Leak? He's trying to make the team as a backup QB north of the border with the Montreal Alouettes.

4) Memo to Cialis; I've never taken your product, but if I did and I lost my hearing because of it, how the hell could I call my doctor? Don't you have to be able to hear to use a telephone?

3) They showed the two kids on TV Saturday who dress as umpires and sit behind the plate in various ballparks; if you watched any ball at all last year, you saw these guys, since they went to every big league park. When they showed the "umps" Saturday, Joe Buck/Tim McCarver were amazed by them, as if they had never seen them before. Guess they don't watch baseball during the week; why would they? Its only their job.

2) The person who has McCarver's job (analyst for World Series) should be one of the country's foremost experts on baseball, meaning he needs to watch games every night on the dish, to keep up with the sport. No way he does this if he hadn't seen the "umps" before. He's stealing money.

1) If the baseball playoffs started Monday, the playoff teams would be:
NL: Atlanta--St Louis--San Diego--NY Mets
AL: Bronx--Minnesota--Texas--Tampa Bay

Weather to watch

Royals at Nationals: 20 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Who's hot

Yankees have won nine of their last 13.

Who's not

Nationals have lost eight of their last nine.

A's have lost seven of their last nine.

Reds have lost six of their last seven.

Royals have lost four of their last five.

Diamondbacks have lost five of their last six.

Key stat

47 - Number of career Sprint Cup victories by four-time defending champion before notching his first win on a road course Sunday at Sonoma. Johnson's first career road-course victory may have an asterick beside it after leader Marcus Ambrose was penalized when his car stalled during a restart.

Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Portugal will be without playmaking midfielder Deco in Monday's match against North Korea. Deco hurt his left hip in training Friday and sat out training Sunday. Deco's absence could limit the effectiveness of superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal's best scoring threat.

Game of the day

Yankees at Diamondbacks

Notable quotable

"Everyone in the whole world is mocking us now. I'm gutted, because we're not playing football any more."

French winger Franck Ribery said before the World Cup team boycotted Sunday's training session.

Tips and notes

The Yankees have been using the designated hitter spot to get injured shortstop Derek Jeter, second baseman Alex Rodriguez and catcher Jorge Posada some at-bats without risking farther injury in the field. That's no longer an option now that the Yankees embark on the West Coast road trip for interleague games against the Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers. Rather than press them into service too soon, look for manager Joe Girardi to give his stars some rest during the road swing.

The struggling Astros have already started shaking up their roster, promoting three players from Triple-A Round Rock and designating three players for assignment. Among the players called up was catcher Jason Castro, the No. 10 overall draft pick in 2008, third baseman Chris Johnson and outfielder Jason Bourgeois while catcher Kevin Cash, reliever Casey Daigle and outfielder Cory Sullivan were designated for assignment. Look for the Astros to at least play harder now that management has shown it is ready to move those who don't.

Lance Armstrong finished second in the Tour of Switzerland on Sunday, proving he still has the legs to climb the mountains with the best of them. It was his final tuneup for the Tour de France, which he has won a record seven times. The oddsmakers are not sold enough to make him the favorite, but he has moved up to third-best at 12/1. Alberto Contador is the heavy favorite at 4/6 with Andy Schleck second-best at 17/2. People show know by now never to count Lance out. Might be worth a shot at a dozen-to-one
