What's up with these 'resort fees' that Vegas hotels are charging??

Never heard of this before, are these relatively new?

Seems like all hotels have jumped on board with resort fees, typically $10-20 per day. Looks like most include internet, so at least you get something useful with it.

Sounds like they are charged in addition to room rate... Have I just never noticed this or is it new?

Anyone?

Really? I'm in AC constantly and in NJ they call it "luxury tax" about 8% of room price To me this has been a direct monthly expense since I was 21 years old

Its mostly the MGM/Mirage properties that charge the resort fees. A few others have joined in as well. But like previously mentioned, at least you get something. Usually free internet access in the room, a newspaper every morning, welcome cocktail, and free bottles of water in the room.

Surprisingly, Harrahs properties havent joined in yet. Harrahs, Planet Hollywood, Paris, Bally's, Bills, Flamingo, IP, Caesars, and Rio all do NOT charge a resort fee.

From what I read, don't know if it's true but the resort fees supposedly aren't subject to taxes so the hotel can just pocket the money without paying any taxes on it.

simply a deceptive way to allow hotel's to advertise low rates and still get revenue, in reality it has generated too much negative publicity. thus harrah's reluctance to implement the resort fee scheme.
Interesting concept charging, up to $20, for stuff that was already provided free. TI is really outrageous as a fee of 20 with rates as low as 40 is criminal.

Stratosphere: $11.99
had been the most ridiculous with rates typically around $20, the "fee" is +50% of the daily rate.

last time out there i spent $12/day on internet, so i guess these aren't that bad if they include internet. just seems funny for the hotels to say the fee gets you all the stuff that you always got without the fee. like its a privilege to be able to park your car there or use the pool.

I think it has something to do with boosting revenue for state taxes paid by casinos to the state. A year or two ago it was all over the news and it was something about funding state programs. Didn't pay much attention to it. Will ask around and get a definitive answer.

My Girlfriend works for one of the big casinos, she says not all of them do this, but some do and its supposed to pay for things like electricity and air conditioning. It's just another way for them to make money. I remember many years ago I stayed at the "Wild Wild West" in Vegas they did it and got sued I remember getting a thing in the mail asking if I wanted to participate in a class action suit for payout of like 13 bucks. I laughed and through it away.

It is so they keep their "base rate" low. I was at the trump in Febrary and had to pay 13.99 each day per computer. It was NOT included in the resort fee. Oh ya, the pool was but fitness club was extra. They are just scamming bastards.

The thing I do not understand: There are casinos in Penna, Delaware, NJ, Michigan, Ind; etc.' it seems to me Vegas ahould go for increased value and ambience; getting the money back at the casino win column; after giving the puntor a break on room rates, food, and beverages..What happened to the gambling oriented casinos in Vegas??

They added the "energy fee" or some bullshit a few years ago when California was having the rolling blackouts and gas prices were through the roof.

It's freakin' 2010; internet should be free at all of these hotels....but then to charge $10+/day is even more ridiculous. I usually get internet for one day then say "fuck it" the rest of the time and just catch up when I get home. I don't spend enough time in the hotel or on the internet when in vegas anyways.

Some of those charges are ridiculous...but if it includes internet and gym access, it may have some value...but parking? pool towels? incoming faxes? Who the fuck has incoming faxes? turn down service? daily newspaper? local phone calls? What a joke!!

well the roomrates are lower in LV than about anywhere in the US. Seems you get internet now with most of these deals....almost like they decided lets just charge everybody for internet.

If you'll notice, the Harrah's group charges no resort fees. One of the better hotels in Vegas...the "M".....doesn't charge any either and has some of the best rooms in Vegas.

I live here in Las Vegas and I have stayed at several Hotels that have the resort fees. I have no problem with them as I get usually more in ameneties than what they charge. Most of the so called freebies Hotels that don't charge a resort fee get their $$ from internet fees etc. The last time I checked the " M " charged a $ 25. resort fee BTW ! Harrahs is what it is... Their video pay schedules suck and their futures wagers are probably the worst in the State of Nevada. Just check out the future odds and video poker schedules when you are in Las Vegas for the Bash as Planet Hollywood is a harrah's Casino now !
