Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Cubs at Seattle Mariners (-105, 6.5)

After rumors swirled about Aramis Ramirez quitting on the Cubs, the third baseman cleared the air Monday and defended his manager.

"If anybody knows how to handle the club, it's Lou (Piniella),” he said. “As players, we haven't gotten it done.

"We have to hit better, pitch better and field better. We have to get it done between the lines. We haven't done it yet."

Chicago ranks 28th in fielding percentage and have committed 55 errors this season – the third-most in MLB. The Cubbies committed two errors Saturday which led to four unearned runs in a 12-0 loss to Anaheim.

The Cubs returned the favor Sunday with a 12-1 victory but the team is still looking for answers, having dropped 12 of its last 20 games.

"It's embarrassing when you make as many mental mistakes as we have,” Ramirez continued. “We're big leaguers. That isn't supposed to happen to a veteran team. It's one thing to make physical errors, another to make mental errors. You have to be prepared mentally all the time."

Don’t look now but Seattle has quietly won four consecutive games – tying its longest streak of the season. Look for Jason Vargas to put together another strong outing as he’s only given up more than three runs in just one start this season.

Pick: Mariners

Florida Marlins at Baltimore Orioles (+115, 8.5)

The Fins’ visit to an American League ballpark couldn’t come at a better time.

Stud shortstop Hanley Ramirez has been bothered by a hamstring injury the past two games and the designated hitter spot that will be available to Florida Tuesday could be the perfect place for him.

"If that is the case, and that's the way we've got to go, it's the way we've got to go," manager Freddi Gonzalez said of using Ramirez in the DH role.

Ramirez is hitting .360 with two homers and eight RBIs in his last seven games so having him in the batting order is just as important as having him playing in the field. Bettors will want to confirm Ramirez is on the lineup card before placing a wager in this game.

The Marlins will face Baltimore’s No. 2 man, Jeremy Guthrie, who has lost four straight starts. The right hander has received five total runs of support from the hapless O’s offense during his losing streak.

Pick: Marlins

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers (8-4, 3.58 ERA)

The Tigers ace has won three straight starts since dropping back-to-back outings at the end of May. Verlander has given up just seven runs on 16 hits in that span including an eight-inning effort in his most recent trip to the bump in which he struck out 11 batters in a 8-2 win over the Washington Nationals.

Tommy Hanson, Atlanta Braves (7-3, 3.38 ERA)

The Braves young stud is rolling, winning four of his last six starts, boasting an ERA just north of 2.00 and having not tasted defeat since the middle of May. Hanson is coming off a seven-inning showing against the Tampa Bay Rays, allowing just three hits and striking out six batters in a 6-2 victory. He’s 4-1 with a 2.34 ERA away from home this season.

Slumping

Ross Ohlendorf, Pittsburgh Pirates (0-5, 5.22 ERA)

The Bucs starter is still on the hunt for his first win of 2010. The right hander has lost back-to-back starts, most recently allowing five runs on six hits in just over six innings of work in a 5-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Ohlendorf has struggled with his command and has allowed five home runs over his nine starts this season.

This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On June 22 in Baseball History...

1926 - The Cardinals pick up 39-year-old Grover Cleveland Alexander on waivers from the Cubs to help in the pennant chase. He'll go 9-7 down the stretch.

1932 - The N.L., at a meeting of club presidents, finally approves players wearing numbers. The A.L. had started in 1929.

1946 - Bill Veeck heads a syndicate that purchases the Cleveland Indians. This launches Veeck on a long career as a lively promoter.

1947 - Ewell Blackwell just misses pitching back-to-back no-hitters when Eddie Stanky of the Brooklyn Dodgers singles with one out in the ninth inning. Blackwell then gets Al Gionfriddo before Jackie Robinson bangs out a single. Blackwell wins 4-0, his ninth straight win to improve to 11-2. Stanky's hit ends Blackwell's hitless-inning skein at 19.

1976 - Randy Jones pitches the Padres to a 4-2 win over the Giants, and ties Christy Mathewson's 63-year-old N.L. record by going 68 innings without a base on balls. He receives a standing ovation from the home crowd after striking out Darrell Evans to end the seventh. His streak ends when he walks catcher Marc Hill leading off the eighth. It is Jones's 13th win of the year.

1982 - Pete Rose doubles off John Stuper in the third inning of a 3-2 loss to the Cardinals for his 3,772nd career hit, moving him past Hank Aaron into second place on baseball's all-time list.

1984 - In a teary home plate ceremony before the Twins-White Sox game at the Metrodome, Calvin Griffith and his sister, Thelma Haynes, sign a letter of intent to sell their 52 percent ownership of the Twins to Minneapolis banker Carl Pohlad for $32 million. Griffith and his sister had been involved with the franchise since 1922, when owner Clark Griffith of the then-Washington Senators adopted them.

1987 - Tom Seaver abandons his comeback attempt with the injury-riddled Mets and retires with a career record of 311-205, an ERA of 2.86, 3,640 strikeouts, and 61 shutouts.

1990 - The last-place Braves fire manager Russ Nixon and replace him with general manager Bobby Cox, who last managed Toronto in 1985.

1994 - Mets reliever John Franco earns his 253rd career save to break Dave Righetti's record for most saves by a lefthander.

Tips and Trends
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Francisco Giants at Houston Astros [8:05 PM ET]

Giants (-160, O/U 6.5): San Francisco is quite happy to see the Astros in this series, as they have won all 6 meetings with them this year. In total, San Francisco is 14-5 SU this year against teams in the National League Central division. The Giants are 38-30 SU overall this year, 1.5 games behind the Padres in their division. The Giants are +3.17 and +0.17 units both SU and on the RL respectively this season. The Giants have received world class pitching efforts from their starting rotation of late, as they've held 8 of their last 9 opponents to 4 runs or fewer. Offensively, the Giants have scored 6 runs or more in 3 of their last 6 outings. P Tim Lincecum will get the start tonight, as he looks to build on another impressive season. Lincecum is 7-2 this year, with an ERA of 3.11 and a WHIP of 1.22. The Giants are 20-7 in their last 27 games against a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15. Giants are 1-4 in their last 5 road games vs. a right-handed starter. The Giants are 4-0 in Lincecum's last 4 starts against the National League Central. San Francisco is 7-1 in Lincecum's last 8 starts with 5 days of rest. The Giants are 7-2 in Lincecum's last 9 starts after allowing 5 runs or more in their previous game.

Giants are 6-2 last 8 road games against a team with a home winning percentage less than .400%.

Over is 7-3 last 10 road games.

Key Injuries - LF Mark DeRosa (wrist) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3 (UNDER - Total of the Day)

Astros: Houston is in complete turmoil, as they have the 2nd worst record in the National League at 26-44 SU. Only Pittsburgh has a worse record in the National League entering today. Houston has lost 4 consecutive games, and 8 of their past 10 overall. Things aren't going to get any easier, as they face off against a team that has already beaten them all 6 times they've played this year. Offensively, the Astros have been limited to 4 runs or fewer in each of their past 5 games. P Roy Oswalt will take the mound today, as he continues to pitch well despite no run support from his teammates. Oswalt is only 5-8 this year despite a season long ERA of 3.12 and a WHIP of 1.08. The Astros are 16-43 in their last 59 games following a loss. The Astros are 21-47 in their last 68 games against a right-handed starter. Houston is 37-15 in Oswalt's last 52 home starts against a team with a winning record. The Astros are 44-18 in Oswalt's last 62 starts against the National League West. Houston is 1-6 in Oswalt's last 7 Tuesday starts overall.

Astros are 5-0 last 5 when their opponent allows 5 runs or more in their previous game.
Under is 7-3 last 10 home games against a team with a winning record.

Key Injuries - C Humberto Quintero (head) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 1

Los Angeles Dodgers at Los Angeles Angels [10:05 PM ET]

Dodgers (-115, O/U 8): The Dodgers limp into their interleague series with their crosstown rival tonight. The Dodgers have lost their past 4 games, and 7 of their last 10 overall. After leading the National League West division briefly, the Dodgers have since fallen back to 3rd place. The Dodgers are 38-31 SU overall, including 15-18 SU on the road. The Dodgers are +0.22 and -5.08 units both SU and on the RL this season. Offensively, the Dodgers are really struggling with their team batting average. The Dodgers simply aren't consistent enough offensively of late, with Manny Ramirez being one of the biggest culprits. Lefty P Clayton Kershaw will take the ball today, as he looks to lead his team to their 11th win in his 16 starts overall this year. Kershaw is 7-3 this year, with an ERA of 2.96 and a WHIP of 1.28. The Dodgers are 15-6 in their last 21 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. The Dodgers are 8-25 in their last 33 interleague road games against a right-handed starter. The Dodgers are 9-0 in Kershaw's last 9 starts against a team with a winning record. The Dodgers are 4-0 in Kershaw's last 4 road starts against a team with a winning record. The Dodgers are 1-9 in Kershaw's last 10 starts during game 1 of a series.

Dodgers are 13-3 last 16 after allowing 2 runs or less in their previous game.
Under is 4-1 last 5 road games against a team with a winning home record.

Key Injuries - 3B Blake DeWitt (knee) is probable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (Side of the Day)

Angels: The Angels are excited to meet up with their crosstown rivals yet again this month, and they are hoping for a similar outcome in this series. The Angels swept the Dodgers earlier this month, scoring 20 runs in their 3 game series. Speaking of 20 runs in a series, that's exactly how many runs they scored against the Cubs in their most recent series. The Angels are 39-33 SU overall this year, 3.5 games behind the Rangers in the American League West standings. The Angels are +5.65 and +9.11 units both SU and on the RL respectively this year. P Ervin Santana will take the mound tonight, as he is 6-5 with an ERA of 3.91 and a WHIP of 1.36 this year. The Angels are 5-1 in their last 6 games against a left-handed starter. The Angels are 14-5 in their last 19 interleague games against a left-handed starter. The Angels are 4-1 in Santana's last 5 home starts against a team with a winning record. The Angels are 14-4 in Santana's last 18 starts during game 1 of a series. The Angels are 1-4 in Santana's last 5 interleague starts overall.

Angels are 6-1 last 7 games following a loss.
Over is 6-1 last 7 interleague games against a team with a winning record.

Key Injuries - SS Erick Aybar (knee) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 2

Daily Sports Roundup: June 22Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Giants and Astros send their aces to the mound for their game in Houston, while the World Cup continues with four matchups.

Chasing the World Cup . . .

The World Cup schedule expands to four games per day on Tuesday, with Mexico vs. Uruguay, France vs. South Africa, Nigeria vs. South Korea, and Greece vs. Argentina. Winless France will be looking to salvage something from the World Cup as they take on the host team as a +125 favorite; South Africa is pegged at +210, with draw odds of +230. Argentina is a -175 favorite against Greece (+550), with draw odds of +250, while South Korea is favored at +145 over Nigeria (+175), with draw odds of +225. The closest match of the day, though, is expected to be Mexico (+250) vs. Uruguay (+275), with the draw odds set at -110 for the meeting between those two 1-0-1 teams.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The NL-only matchup for Tuesday has San Francisco at Houston, with the Giants' Tim Lincecum (7-2, 3.11 ERA) slated to take on the Astros' Roy Oswalt (5-8, 3.12 ERA). Righthander Lincecum is coming off two consecutive interleague victories, holding the Orioles and Athletics to four earned runs on 15 hits over 14 innings of work (and fanning 17 batters). Righthander Oswalt has also won two straight starts, giving up four earned runs on 10 hits over his 14 innings of work against the Royals and Rockies. Oswalt fanned 16 batters in those two outings while issuing only three walks.

The interleague schedule for Tuesday then has Florida at Baltimore, Cleveland at Philadelphia, Kansas City at Washington, St. Louis at Toronto, San Diego at Tampa Bay, Detroit at the Mets, Pittsburgh at Texas, Atlanta at the White Sox, Minnesota at Milwaukee, Boston at Colorado, the Dodgers at the Angels, Cincinnati at Oakland, the Cubs at Seattle, and the Yankees at Arizona. Andy Pettitte (8-2, 2.47 ERA) will take on Dan Haren (7-5, 4.71 ERA) in that Yankees/D-Backs matchup. Lefthander Pettitte was beaten by the Phillies last time out (two earned runs in seven innings), while righthander Haren is coming off a loss to Boston (four earned runs over 5 2-3 innings)

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there are two games on the WNBA's schedule for Tuesday, with Minnesota at New York and Chicago at Connecticut. The Sky (4-8 straight-up, 6-6 against-the-spread) enter Tuesday's contest riding a four-game losing streak that has dropped them to the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings. Chicago fell 65-61 on the road in overtime to Washington last time out, despite 17 points and nine boards from Sylvia Fowles. The Sun (8-3 SU, 8-2-1 ATS) lead the Eastern standings, and edged Phoenix 96-94 last game. Tina Charles led the way with 24 points for the Sun that day.

Tuesday's six-pack

-- Gregory Havret, who finished 2nd at US Open, was ranked 391st in the world coming into the weekend. Lot of good golfers out there.

-- 47 golfers have already earned $1M+ on PGA Tour this season.

-- Panthers' WR Steve Smith broke his arm playing flag football at his camp; he'll miss start of training camp, but won't miss any real games.

-- Nationals sent Opening Day starter John Lannan down to AA; in his last four starts, Lannan was 0-3, 10.24.

-- Astros brought up catching prospect Jason Castro from AAA-- after a tough April (.229) he is hitting .278 since May 1st.

-- The strength coach at Oklahoma makes $244,000 a year; the thing is that strength coaches are the most important coaches on the staff, other than the two coordinators. They spend the most time with players.

************************************************** **

Tuesday's List of 13 (+1); Our weekly look at American League

14) Orioles-- O's are 19-50, worst record in AL; there is racehorse named Zenyatta that has won all 17 of its races, with 15 being graded stakes. At what point does the owner (who will make money hand over fist this year because he owns Nationals' (Strasburg) TV rights), just say the hell with it and go hire someone who can build a team that can win at least as many games as a damn horse wins races? I'm just askin'.......

13) Indians-- Catching prospect Santana is hitting .393 in his first nine big league games, with five doubles, two HRs in 35 PA. Lets hope the Tribe doesn't trade him before the July 31 trading deadline.

12) Mariners-- OK, I'm adding this to my list of things to do right now; go out to Phoenix and watch a Diamondbacks game from the pool in RF. I'm already heading there for spring training the first March I am retired from my day job, might as well stick around for a real ballgame.

11) Royals-- DirecTV is charging $315 this year for NFL Sunday Ticket; it was $289 LY, $179 as recently as 2003. Its still worth it, but the greed of NFL owners (and their business partners) will eventually come back to bite them. Or maybe it won't, and they'll just get a lot wealthier.......

10) A's-- Woke up in middle of night Sunday after a nightmare; dreamt in 8th inning with 1-run lead, A's pitched to Albert Pujols with two out and men on 1st/3rd. Then I realized, they actually did it.........and got him out. Even stupid ideas turn out OK now and then.

9) White Sox-- Pale Hose got back into the race by pummeling Nationals and Pirates last week; Peavy has sore shoulder, Ozzie wanted to DL him, so Jake goes out and throws 3-hit CG shutout Saturday. Go figure.

8) Blue Jays-- Did you know in the history of baseball, no 2B has won a Gold Glove and a batting title???? Not just in the same year-- EVER!!!! This is a very surprising fact. Robinson Cano has a chance to be first.

7) Tigers-- I watch Brandon Phillips play, he has just horrendous body language; after lining out to LF leading off 8th inning in 1-1 game Monday night, Phillips walked back to dugout, slammed his helmet into the rack, and generally acted like a 10-year old. Its not the first time he's done it. Too bad-- he's a good player, very productive.

6) Angels-- I'm doing a list later this week of the best 13 active coaches in any sport; one of my tougher decisions is how to place baseball skippers. Leyland-Larussa-Francona-Torre-Cox and Scioscia, the best of them all.

5) Twins-- Joe Mauer is going through same thing David Wright had last year, his power numbers shrinking because of new home ballpark that is not so hitter friendly. Advantage of playing in smaller market-- we don't hear about it every 10 minutes, and he is playing thru it, batting .304 with an on-base percentage of .382, with line drives on 27.3% of batted balls.

4) Rays-- So far this month, their pitchers have an OPS of .802, 27th out of 30 big league teams (8-9, 4.93). This franchise has stadium issues, free agent issues-- they better enjoy this season as much as they can. They've lost their last six Friday games, for what its worth.

3) Rangers-- After slow start, young 1B Smoak is hitting .318 so far this month, with 20 RBI, as he starts to establish himself in the Ranger lineup. Good for Ron Washington-- his team has now won 8 in a row on the road. Nolan Ryan could be winning Executive of the Year this season.

2) Red Sox-- Kevin Youkilis' on-base percentage after count on him goes to 1-0: .516....after 2-0 count, .673.....3-0 count, .773. He's only put first ball in play 12 times this year (4-12) in 237 ABs. Very excellent hitter.

1) Bronx Bombers-- Over his last four starts, AJ Burnett is 0-4, 9.85, so this #1 ranking is hardly set in stone. Nucleus of this team is getting old; where will they buy their next set of stars????

Bettor's best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

Minnesota Lynx at New York Liberty – This game’s total has escalated to 161 after opening three points lower. Eight of the last 10 meetings between these teams have gone UNDER.

Padres at Rays – A number of sportsbooks have moved the total in this game to 8.5 after opening at 8.

Pirates at Rangers – Texas is on fire right now and opened as -250 favorites but that moneyline is as low as -220 at a couple of wagering outlets.

Yankees at Diamondbacks – The total for this matchup has dropped a half run after opening at 10.

Reds at Athletics – Most shops have moved the total in this game to 7.5 after opening at 8.

Weather report
(Forecasts are extracted from Weather.com the night before the game.)

Red Sox at Rockies – A 14 mph wind is projected to blow out to right field.

Braves at White Sox – A 30 percent chance of rain is expected throughout the game.

Marlins at Orioles – The forecast calls for a 30-40 percent chance of precipitation.

Who’s hot

Argentina is 2-0 in the World Cup, outscoring opponents 5-1.

After losing four straight, the Lynx (WNBA) are 2-0 SU and ATS in their last two games.

The Rangers are winners of eight consecutive games.

The Red Sox and White Sox have each won six straight games.

Who’s not

France has yet to score a goal in this year’s World Cup.

The Nationals have dropped six games in a row.

Chicago (WNBA) is 0-4 SU and 1-3 ATS in its last four games.

Key stat

3.07 – Earned run average of the San Diego Padres – the lowest mark in MLB. The Friars rank third-to-last in runs scored but have continued to get stellar pitching efforts from starters and relievers. The first-place Pads send Mat Latos (3.19 ERA) to the bump Tuesday.

Suspensions that shouldn’t be overlooked

France is reeling amid team controversy but South Africa has a couple of suspensions that could leave the team vulnerable Tuesday. Goalie Itumeleng Khune is out of the match after receiving a red card last game and midfielder Kagiso Dikgacoi will also not play after receiving his second yellow card of the tournament. Covers Expert Ben Burns believes these suspensions will be key to France’s victory in his Free Pick selection.

Notable quotable

"First of all, I would like to specify that the punishment that was handed out to Nicolas Anelka is justified. I support the federation in this matter. No one can permit themselves to act like that, either in the dressing room or elsewhere."

-- France coach Raymond Domenech said of his decision to remove Anelka from the team after the two got into a heated argument during Saturday’s game. French players were not pleased with the move (see note below).

Tips and notes

- The French national team is in absolute chaos right now. Players walked off the field before practice Sunday in protest of the expulsion of a teammate after their coach, Raymond Domenech, kicked him off the team. Domenech said that his team was acting with “stupidity” and “imbecility” before it returned to practice Monday. Team captain Patrice Evra has not been assigned the same title for Tuesday’s match because he instigated the walkout. France is in a must-win situation versus South Africa but Domenech said his players have “expended a lot of energy” amid these events. The South Africans are +200 to win the match.

- If the Mexico-Uruguay match Tuesday ends in a draw both teams advance. The “draw” betting option is the favorite at -135 so oddsmakers are assuming both teams are content with that outcome. The total for the game is the lowest of the tournament at 1.5 which even further indicates Vegas believes this will be a low-scoring affair. Uruguay played a 0-0 match versus France and will likely use the same gameplan in this one because a draw gives them the No. 1 position coming out of the group.

- Since eliminating a toe tap in his swing, Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton has been the hottest hitter in baseball. Texas hitting coach Clint Hurdle has been trying to get Hamilton to remove the timing mechanism from his swing since spring training but the lefty wasn’t able to until June 1. Since then, Hamilton has raised his batting average from .289 to .337. He went 5-for-6 on Sunday and has 25 RBIs, seven homers and a .447 average this month. A bettor might be able to find a nice total bases matchup with Hamilton while he still is on this tear.
