BALTIMORE (AP)

The Florida Marlins have fired manager Fredi Gonzalez and named Edwin Rodriguez to replace him on an interim basis.

The team said in a statement Wednesday that it also dismissed bench coach Carlos Tosca and hitting coach Jim Presley.

Florida moved to 34-36 following Tuesday night's win over the Orioles. Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria says he's making the change because he believes the team can "do better and be better.''

In three-plus seasons as the Marlins' manager, Gonzalez was 276-279. The Marlins began the day fourth in the NL East, 7 1/2 games behind first-place Atlanta.
Rodriguez has spent the past 1 1/2 seasons as manager of Triple-A New Orleans.

I think the Han-Ram situation played a big part.

Orioles should jump on this guy as soon as possible.

The owner fired everyone but the person at fault, and that's the pitching coach. O yeah, stop being a cheap bastard and actually get some arms in the bullpen. Totally idiotic move by a clueless organization.

their owner is a terrible owner and he is also a total idiot for thinking they are better than a .500 team. they are mediocre but Loria thinks they should be winning 90 games and in the playoffs. clueless.

i don't think the marlins are clueless. otherwise, year after year they would be like the pirates. instead, every year they seem to overachieve. never hear the marlins saying, 'poor us, we can't contend cause we don't have the payroll.'

The writing has been on the wall. Before the season the Marlins had an expectation of being a playoff team. The bullpen sucks.

I just saw the greatest Marlin reliever ever (Alfonseca) pitch last week down the road from me here in the Independent League.
Loria has some talent with Uggla, Han-Ram, etc. etc. but some talent doesn't constitute a 'team'
Zero chemistry.

They want another $23 million team that can win the World Series. It won't happen. Marlins owner is a cheap bastard.

their fans never have turned for this team, even if contending. why should the owner spend more money? nobody is in this biz to lose $$. they are getting a new stadium. an immense help for the franchise, cause the stadium they have now is the conceivably the worst in mlb.

Twenty-seven years later, Florida Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez returns to Dodger Stadium

by Joe Capozzi
Marlins rookie right-fielder Mike Stanton and catcher Brett Hayes are expecting dozens of family and friends tonight at Dodger Stadium. Both grew up in Los Angeles and graduated from Notre Dame High School.
But manager Edwin Rodriguez is back for the first time since 1983 when he played for the San Diego Padres. Rodriguez never got into any games at Dodger Stadium.
Rodriguez looked forward to chatting with two former teammates who are now Dodgers coaches: Don Mattingly was a teammate with the Yankees in 1983, and Larry Bowa managed Edwin at Class AAA Las Vegas in the Padres system in 1986

Bowa “got thrown out nine games in a row — nine games in a row,” Rodriguez said, laughing. “That’s a lot of energy.”

MARLINS PLAYING GOOD BALL, hope they are not sellers at the deadline:

===================

The Marlins' walkoff-win ritual is becoming commonplace but hardly routine. Helms hit a bases-loaded RBI single with none out in the 11th inning yesterday, and Florida earned its fourth walkoff victory of the week, beating the visiting Atlanta Braves, 5-4.
"You don't see a stretch like this very often," Helms said. "With the lead changes and the drama at the end of the games, it's just amazing to see that in one week."
The Marlins went 7-3 on their homestand, with six wins by one run. The surge left them at .500 and still in playoff contention as they begin a West Coast trip tonight.

Still 8 games back, but the wild card in the NL is getting interesting.
