Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Braves at Chicago White Sox (+105, 8.5)

Two weeks ago we were talking about how the South Siders were looking to trade all of their players and that the manager and GM were about to step into a boxing ring.

After the dust settled, the White Sox went on to win six straight and 10 of 11 games. Chicago came into Tuesday’s game versus Atlanta with a .500 record – the first time the team’s carried the mark since it was 1-1 on April 7.

"We are playing good baseball and just happened to be playing some National League teams that aren't thought of as major powers,” pitcher John Danks said of naysayers after Chicago defeated Washington and Pittsburgh on its recent road trip.

"It would be nice if we go out and play well against Atlanta, being that they are a first-place team and we will get more credit for what we are doing,” he added. “When it's all said and done, it's just a matter of winning.”

Even if the Chi-Sox are beating up on inferior MLB teams, this is a squad the baseball world had written off earlier this month. Now, the Sox are contenders in the AL Central, sitting 5.5 games behind the division-leading Twins.

Mark Buehrle has been pretty good in his last two starts after enduring a minor slump, winning two straight decisions while yielding two runs or fewer in each. The Bravos are hitting .241 against lefties this season.

Pick: White Sox

Florida Marlins at Baltimore Orioles (+110, 9)

When you’re on a team that’s 19-50, you might start thinking in terms of “me” instead of “team.”

It appears that’s the case with Baltimore outfielder Adam Jones. It was reported that after a 9-4 loss to the Padres over the weekend, Jones approached the scorer’s table and asked for his first-inning at-bat that led to an infield error be changed to a hit.

The official scorer obliged, but this could be a sign that players in the Orioles clubhouse have given up on the season and are only concerned about personal accomplishments. An incident like this may be overlooked had Baltimore won or was playing average ball, but this just highlights the team’s season struggles.

This is a pretty fair price for a decent squad like the Fins against a pathetic team like the O’s. Grab the short favorite in this matchup.

Pick: Marlins

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

R.A. Dickey, New York Mets (5-0, 2.82 ERA)

The Mets knuckleballer has yet to taste defeat since joining the rotation in May. He’s undefeated in six starts with an ERA south of 3.00. In his most recent start, Dickey gave up two runs on seven hits while striking out seven batters in 6.0 innings of work for a 6-4 victory against the Cleveland Indians. That win was one of three victories on the road this year for the righty.

Ubaldo Jimenez, Colorado Rockies (13-1, 1.15 ERA)

Jimenez puts more distance between him and any other pitcher in the bigs, picking up win No. 13 in a one-run, eight-hit effort that equated to a 5-1 victory against the Minnesota Twins. The Rockies' right-hander has allowed two or fewer runs in all but one of his 14 starts and has blanked opposing batters in six outings this season.

Slumping

Brian Bannister, Kansas City Royals (6-5, 5.70 ERA)

Bannister’s season has taken a turn for the worse after winning five straight outings. In his last two games, the Royals righty has allowed 14 runs on 17 hits including three home runs. In his most recent trip to the bump, Bannister lasted just 4.0 innings after being knocked around for five runs on seven hits. He also has the lofty job of going up against Nationals super prospect Stephen Strasburg in DC Wednesday. Bannister is 1-4 with an 8.57 ERA on the road this season.

Kevin Correia, San Diego Padres (5-5, 5.27 ERA)

Correia is far from his red-hot start to the season. He has just one win in his last eight starts and has been inconsistent over his most recent trips to the hill. The Padres' right-hander has allowed 18 total earned runs over his last four appearances, holding a 1-1 mark in that span. In his most recent start, Correia was tagged for five runs in 5.0 innings including two home runs in a 7-1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays last Wednesday. He’s given up at least one dinger in three of his last four starts.

This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On June 23 in Baseball History...

1917 - Boston pitcher Babe Ruth starts against Washington. He walks leadoff man Eddie Foster, griping to plate umpire Brick Owens after each pitch. On ball four, Ruth plants a right to the umpire's jaw. He is ejected, and Ernie Shore relieves. Foster is caught stealing, and Shore retires all 26 men he faces in a 4-0 win, getting credit in the books for a perfect game.

1932 - Lou Gehrig plays his 1,103rd successive game in a Yankees uniform, equaling Joe Sewell's record with one team (Cleveland).

1961 - Ernie Banks voluntarily takes the bench as a sore knee brings his 717 consecutive-games-played streak to an end.

1962 - Larry Doby, retired from the Cleveland Indians, signs on with the Chunichi Dragons. He becomes, with Don Newcombe, the first former major league player to toil for a Japanese team. Doby's season batting average will be a mediocre .225.

1963 - Jimmy Piersall of the New York Mets hits the 100th home run of his major league career and celebrates by running around the bases backwards. Dallas Green of the Phillies, who gave up the home run, is not amused. Neither is Commissioner Ford Frick, who is in the stands.

1971 - In a spectacular performance, Phillies pitcher Rick Wise no-hits the Reds 4-0 and hits two home runs in the game. Wise gets Pete Rose for the last out.

1973 - Phillies pitcher Ken Brett beats the Expos 7-2 and hits a home run for a major-league record for a pitcher fourth consecutive game. He hit home runs on June 9, 13, and 18: he will total ten for his career.

1981 - Dave Koza scores Marty Barrett with a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 33rd inning, giving Pawtucket a 3-2 win over Rochester and ending the longest game in professional baseball history. The game had been suspended April 19 after 32 innings and eight hours, seven minutes of play, but the continuation took only eighteen minutes to complete. Bob Ojeda pitches one inning to earn the win.

1984 - Chicago's Ryne Sandberg hit two late-inning home runs off St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Bruce Sutter to tie the game twice as the Cubs went on to win 12-11 in 11 innings. Sandberg led off the ninth inning with a solo home run to tie the game 9-9 then hit a two-run, two-out homer in the 10th to tie the game 11-11.

1988 - George Steinbrenner fires Billy Martin for the fifth time, replacing him with Lou Piniella. In 1985, Piniella was fired and replaced by Martin. In 1985, Martin was fired and replaced by Piniella. New York's 40-28 record is the fourth best in the big leagues, but the Yankees had just completed a 2-7 road trip.

1994 - Replays show that A's pitcher Bobby Witt beat Kansas City's Greg Gagne to first base in the sixth inning, but umpire Gary Cedarstrom sees it differently. The infield hit is the only blemish on what otherwise would have been a perfect game.

Tips and Trends
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Tigers at New York Mets [ESPN | 7:10 PM ET]

Tigers: Detroit was rolling right along, winners of 8 of their previous 10 games. However, all didn't go well in their series opener in New York against the Mets. Detroit has an impressive record this year, 38-31 SU to be exact. However, the Tigers are only 13-20 SU on the road this season. Detroit is +5.63 and +7.24 units respectively both SU and on the RL this year. Tonight marks the 1st time in their last 10 games that the Tigers will be the listed underdog. P Jeremy Bonderman has actually pitched fairly well this season, despite minimal expectation. Bonderman is 3-4 with an ERA of 4.06 and a WHIP of 1.23 this year. The Tigers are 6-1 in their last 7 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. Detroit is 5-1 in their last 6 games against a right-handed starter. The Tigers are 48-22 in their last 70 interleague games against a right-handed starter. The Tigers are 4-0 in Bonderman's last 4 starts against the National League East. Detroit is 1-8 in Bonderman's last 9 starts against a team with a winning record.

Tigers are 19-7 last 26 games against the National League East.
Over is 5-1 last 6 interleague games.

Key Injuries - CF Austin Jackson (back) is probable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Mets (-110, O/U 8): New York had an offensive explosion last night, as they were able to snap their 2 game losing streak. The Mets are 40-20 SU this season, including an impressive 25-10 SU at home. New York is easily one of the elite teams to back from a betting standpoint, as they are up +11 and 21.72 units both SU and on the RL this season. Only 2 of their last 10 opponents have scored more than 4 runs against this Mets pitching staff. One of the biggest surprises on this Mets team has been pitcher R.A Dickey. Dickey is 5-0 with an ERA of 2.82 and a WHIP of 1.41 this season. The Mets are 9-2 in their last 11 interleague games overal. The Mets are 7-1 in their last 8 games against a right-handed starter. New York is 1-5 in their last 6 interleague home games against a right-handed starter. New York is 4-0 in Dickey's last 4 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance. The Mets are 5-0 in Dickey's last 5 starts overall.

Mets are 8-1 last 9 home games against a team with a winning record.
Under is 7-0 last 7 home games against a team with a winning record.

Key Injuries - 2B Luis Castillo (foot) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)

Chicago Cubs at Seattle Mariners [WGN | 10:10 PM ET]

Cubs: Chicago is hoping their offensive woes are a thing of the past after scoring 18 runs in their previous series with the Angels. To no surprise, the Cubs have only played to the under in 1 of their previous 6 games. Chicago is 31-38 SU this year, 7 games behind the National League Central division lead. The Cubs are -16.66 and -8.42 units both SU and on the RL respectively this year. Away from home, Chicago is only 13-20 SU. P Randy Wells will get the ball tonight, as he looks to bounce back from a few bad starts recently. Wells is 3-5 overall this year, with an ERA of 4.92 and a WHIP of 1.46. The Cubs are 5-0 in their last 5 road games against a left-handed starter. Chicago is 12-26 in their last 38 games against a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15. The Cubs are 6-1 in Wells' last 7 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance. The Cubs are 1-4 in Wells' last 5 road starts against a team with a losing record.

Cubs are 3-12 last 15 interleague road games.
Over is 6-1 last 7 games with the total set at 6.5 or lower.

Key Injuries - 3B Aramis Ramirez (thumb) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Mariners (-170, O/U 6.5): Seattle is playing their best baseball of the season, as they've won their past 4 games. The Mariners can thank their pitching staff for their winning streak, as they've only allowed 2 runs in their past 4 games combined. Offensively, Seattle has only scored 9 runs in their past 4 games, yet still won all 4 games. Despite the winning streak, Seattle is still in last place in the American League West standings. The Mariners are 28-41 SU, the 3rd worst record in the American League. Seattle is -14.28 and -6.39 units both SU and on the RL this season. P Cliff Lee takes the mound tonight, as he looks to put up even more staggering numbers. Lee is only 5-3 this year, despite an ERA of 2.55 and a WHIP of 0.90. The Mariners are 4-0 in their last 4 games against the National League Central. The Mariners are 8-2 in their last 10 home games against a right-handed starter. Seattle is 6-1 in Lee's last 7 starts as a favorite. The Mariners are 4-1 in Lee's last 5 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance.

Mariners are 10-1 last 11 interleague games as a favorite of -151 to -200.
Under is 5-0 last 5 interleague games.

Key Injuries - C Josh Bard (leg) is out.

Daily Sports Roundup: June 23

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rockies play host to the Red Sox, while the United States and England look to finally break into the win column at the World Cup.

Chasing the World Cup . . .

Group C and Group D take the pitch with four games on the World Cup schedule for Wednesday. Group C action has the United States vs. Algeria and Slovenia vs. England, while in Group D it'll be Australia vs. Serbia and Ghana vs. Germany. The United States is the -140 favorite against Algeria (+375), with draw odds of +260, while England is favored at -250 over Slovenia (+650), with draw odds of +330. Slovenia leads that group with four points, while the USA and England each have two. Serbia is a -120 favorite against Australia (+300), with draw odds of +260, and Germany is favored at -250 over Ghana (+650), with draw odds of +330. Ghana is the Group D leader with four points, while Germany and Serbia have three points apiece.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Boston's John Lackey (8-3, 4.53 ERA) is set to take on Colorado's Ubaldo Jimenez (13-1, 1.15 ERA) as the Red Sox continue their road series against the Rockies on Wednesday night. Righthander Lackey has turned in three straight quality starts, holding the Phillies, Diamondbacks, and Orioles to seven earned runs on 21 hits over his last 20 innings of work; Lackey last lost on May 21. Righthander Jimenez continued his dominating campaign last time out, surrendering just a single earned run over eight innings of work versus the Twins. Jimenez has won 13 of his 14 outings.

Also on the MLB schedule for Wednesday: San Francisco at Houston, Cincinnati at Oakland, Florida at Baltimore, Cleveland at Philadelphia, St. Louis at Toronto, San Diego at Tampa Bay, Detroit at the Mets, Pittsburgh at Texas, Minnesota at Milwaukee, Atlanta at the White Sox, the Yankees at Arizona, the Dodgers at the Angels, the Cubs at Seattle, and Kansas City at Washington. Royals starter Brian Bannister (6-5, 5.70 ERA) will try to match up with Nationals rookie hurler Stephen Strasburg (2-0, 1.86 ERA) in that last contest. Righthander Bannister allowed 16 runs (14 earned) on 17 hits over his last seven innings of work against the Braves and Reds. Righthander Strasburg has given up four runs on 10 hits over his 19 1-3 innings so far this season.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there's one WNBA game on the schedule for Wednesday, with Tulsa at Atlanta. The Shock (3-8 straight-up, 3-8 against-the-spread) are on a five-game losing streak, falling 92-78 at home to Minnesota in their last game. Scholanda Robinson led the way with 14 points for Tulsa in that defeat. The Dream (9-4 SU, 9-3-1 ATS) were beaten 94-91 on the road by Indiana last game. Angel McCoughtry and Iziane Castro Marques each had 21 points for Atlanta that day, and Sancho Lyttle had 20 rebounds.

***********************************************

Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

13) The doctor who pioneered Tommy John (elbow) surgery should be in the Baseball Hall of Fame, as a contributor. Who has done more to help the game than that guy, whoever he is?

12) Speaking of which, Florida's Josh Johnson had Tommy John surgery in 2008; he is 30-8 since coming back from the operation, and has a streak of eight straight starts where he allowed either zero or one run.

11) Jason Kendall played in his 2,036th game Tuesday, the most by any active player who has never played in a World Series.

10) The home team is 15-0 when Todd Tichenor umpires the plate.

9) As an A's fan, I'll go on record (again) as saying I hate the black jerseys and black hats. Stick to green, gold and white, please?

8) Florida State is playing in its 20th College World Series, the most of any team that has never won it.

7) TCU's game Monday night was their 66th baseball game this season, so you can see why pro teams like drafting college players- they're just much more experienced, been through more games, and will generally take a lot less time to get to the big leagues than high school players.

6) Since the Big Dozen expanded to 11 teams in 1993 by adding Penn St., Ohio State has 12 more conference wins than any other conference team; Indiana has 11 more losses than any of its conference rivals.

5) According to the Houston Chronicle, over last two recruiting seasons, 277 of 576 players signed by Big X (formerly Big 12) schools were from Texas high schools- thats 48.1%..........106 of 226 players signed by teams from Pac-12 are from California- thats 46.2%.

4) The way the schedule was set up, every Pac-10 team played one away game in Los Angeles (USC or UCLA) every year, which really helps their recruiting (see stat in Item #5). But now, with divisional play, that won't be true anymore. Looks like Colorado/Utah would be put in the division that has the LA schools and the Arizona schools, but its not official yet.

3) With the Big X title game no longer (can't have a conference title game in a league with less than 12 teams), looks like Texas-Oklahoma are going to move the Red River Shootout away from the Texas State Fair in October and into December, with game to be played at JerryWorld in Arlington. This would appease the TV people and keep Big X in public spotlight on a very big college football Saturday.

2) Neil Best is a terrific sportswriter for Newsday on Long Island; he had an item this week on how New York's TV ratings stacked up this year, in terms of the biggest sporting events so far this year. It speaks a lot as to what New York sports fans are into, relative to the rest of America.

1) Of the top 56 TV markets in the country, here is now New York's TV ratings ranked, for each of the following events.........
-- Super Bowl-- NYC ratings ranked 51st out of 56 TV markets.
-- BCS title game-- NYC ranked 54th out of 56 markets.
-- College hoop final-- NYC ranked 48th out of 56 markets.
-- NBA Finals-- NYC ranked 29th out of the top 56 TV markets.
-- World Cup so far-- NYC ratings rank 3rd out of 56 TV markets.

Bettor's best friend: Wednesday's wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

Royals at Nationals – With phenom Stephen Strasburg on the mound the home squad opened as -245 favorites and that moneyline can now be found as high as -267.

Pirates at Rangers – The total for this matchup has dropped a half run after opening at 10.5.

Yankees at Diamondbacks – Most sportsbooks have moved the total in this game to 10.5 after opening at 11.

Weather report
(Forecasts are extracted from Weather.com the night before the game.)

Braves at White Sox – A 16 mph wind is projected to blow from first to third base and there is also a 50 percent chance of rain.

Who’s hot

Going into Tuesday, the Braves had won five straight and were 8-2 in their last 10.

The Mariners are 4-0 in their last four outings as of Tuesday.

The resurgent White Sox have won six straight games.

Who’s not

Algeria has scored only one goal in its last five matches, none in the World Cup.

Tulsa (WNBA) is 0-5 SU and ATS in its last five games.

The Dodgers had lost four consecutive games going into Tuesday.

Key stat

.279 – It might take you 20 guesses to get it right but this is the team batting average for the Kansas City Royals – the highest mark in MLB. What the Royals don’t do is hit well with runners in scoring position.

Injury/activation that shouldn’t be overlooked

Philadelphia activated shortstop Jimmy Rollins and placed catcher Carlos Ruiz on the 15-day disabled list with a head injury prior to Tuesday's game against the Cleveland Indians. Rollins has been plagued by two separate stints to the disabled list with a strained right calf. The three-time All-Star was batting .341 with two home runs, seven RBIs and 11 runs scored this season prior to his injury. Ruiz has experienced bouts of dizziness after being injured during a game on June 18, Brian Schneider will likely start in his place.

Notable quotable

"I'm kind of timid at the plate right now. I've never felt this way. Even when I've been going bad before it's like I'll squeak in a blooper here and there. Right now, though, I just have no confidence. I was always confident in the past that I was going to overcome whatever struggles I've had. Right now the confidence isn't there. I really don't know how to describe it."

-- Diamondbacks third baseman Mark Reynolds said after enduring a stretch where he struck out 16 times in 18 at-bats. Reynolds rebounded on Monday by going 1-for-2 with his 17th homer of the season.

Tips and notes

- The U.S. soccer team is in a win-and-in situation going into Wednesday’s World Cup match against Algeria. A tie could possibly advance the U.S. but if England’s game versus Slovenia ends in a draw and the Brits score two more goals than the Americans then those two teams will cast lots to see which advances. The United States definitely has the easier opponent but it always seems like offenses press in this type of situation. Midfielder Clint Dempsey expects Algeria to execute the same gameplan it has by staying “compact defensively, pick and choose their moments when they get forward.” He added that if the match is “0-0 in the 65th to 70th minute, then you're going to see the game open up." A low-scoring first half may be in store for bettors Wednesday.

- It’s been many years since Adrian Beltre was long-bombing with the LA Dodgers but he gets to revisit one of his favorite NL ballparks this week. In 55 games at Coors Field, Beltre is a career .395 hitter with 15 homers and 60 RBIs. Beltre couldn’t wait for the series versus Colorado to start Tuesday saying, “I love it here. I always have.” Boston’s three-bagger rolls into this series on fire with a 10-game hitting streak and a .338 batting average in June. A total base prop for Beltre while playing in the hitting-friendly thin air of Denver could be worth a look.

- Three tennis matches were suspended at Day 2 of Wimbledon due to darkness. Two men’s singles matches are tied at two sets apiece. John Isner and Nicolas Mahut will resume play as the second match of Day 3 while Santiago Giraldo and Thiemo de Bakker will also finish their forehand battle Wednesday. Women’s singles American participant, Vania King, was on the verge of an upset over No. 24 Daniela Hantuchova before play was halted. The two are tied at one set each. From a wagering standpoint, bettors need to be wary of a possible fatigue factor for the three players that advance from these matches. Although they will play early Wednesday, they will have less time to recuperate for their next match.
