Maybe this was discussed last night but did anyone watch this 30 for 30 last night on ESPN? For those of you not well versed in history, Pablo Escobar was probably one of the most influential and famous drug lords in history and lived in Colombia during the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. The show was about the Colombian National Soccer team and the drug money that supported them to include the rise of violence throughout the country. It ends with the Colombian run in the World Cup and the violence that ensued after their failure to get out of their group.

Great view if you didn't see it.

Saw it. Incredibly sad. Seemed like Andres was really a good guy. Also thought it was terrible that they all had to retire just to keep their sanity. Just terrible, all that bloodshed.

Did you see at the end that during that period the country had the #1 murder rate in the world? That's unreal for such a small country compared to the rest of the world.

I remember a Colombian player in WC when at Stanford Stadium accidentally kicking the ball into his own goal.

He was shot outside a night club in Columbia, all though he was partying it up with women in each arm as I remember how the story went.

I wanted to see it but forgot about it. ESPN doesn't re-air them much either because the projects cost $ to make and they're trying to sell some DVDs. Hopefully I'll be able to bootleg like I've done most of them...

Best one I saw was The U one probably
USFL one was good, Reggie Miller/Knicks was good

The film made Pablo look like a saint. Showed how he built houses and soccer fields for the poor.

It's the first 30 for 30 I've watched from beginning to end.

Wow

Great story. I was very fascinated to learn what was going on behind the scenes with the Columbian soccer team before the game with the US. They were getting death threats back home. No wonder they couldn't fully focus on the field. And with what was going on in the country at the time, death threats had to be taken seriously.

Also very sad about Andres Escobar. Seemed like a great person. So sad to see him tragically die like that.

Well treece this was kind of a point of discussion when we watched it as well. If you were poor in Colombia then Pablo was "the man." He did give a lot of his drug money to build homes and soccer fields as well as donations etc. If I were poor, I'd love him as well simply because he was helping people out.

On the other hand, I think the documentary did do a good job of showing just how violent and deep his organization really was. If you think about it, Pablo was a great businessman. He showered the poor with gifts and killed any person or drug syndicate that crossed him.

Another good thing about Pablo was he actually provided order to the country (at least that's what was portrayed). There were rules and laws and he was in charge and the Colombians didn't cross him. He was really a good and bad dude.

just watched an old movie called "Blow". What a different world and life these drug dealers live. The highs and lows are staggering, no pun intended.

I thought about that as well Willie after watching "Traffic" the other day. I think the only way to be successful as a kingpin is to be totally disciplined. No using the blow yourself, must be cautious at every turn, know who your friends are (if that's possible). It's not really a life most of us want to live but damn, it does make a lot of money.
