Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houston Astros at Texas Rangers (-320, 9.5)

As we all are aware here in the RX community, a little bet can go a long way.

For the Texas Rangers, a friendly hairstyle wager between Elvis Andrus and General Manager Jon Daniels sparked its longest winning streak since 1991. Daniels was giving his young shortstop grief about his blonde highlights on June 12 so Andrus asked his boss how many wins in a row it would take for him to dye his hair.

"I said 10, figuring the odds of that were pretty long," said Daniels. "Talk about putting one's foot in their mouth. I was hoping he'd forget, but no such luck. It's not going to be a good look."

It sounds as if the Rangers’ clubhouse and management are having fun this season, and the team’s success reflects that. Texas has won 10 straight (+11.1 units) and 17 of its last 21 games.

Colby Lewis recorded nine strikeouts in a one-run complete game effort last Saturday against the Astros. The ace of the Texas staff is 3-0 in his last three starts and bettors should expect another shutdown performance Friday.

The Strangers were underdogs in the first five games of their win streak but were listed as no less than -135 chalk in the second handful of wins. While this game’s moneyline is too pricy for most bettors, Texas has only failed to cover the runline in three of its last 17 victories and should have no problem doing so here.

Pick: Rangers runline (-160)

San Diego Padres at Florida Marlins (-120, 8.5)

Every bettor knows it but a change of scenery, or management, can produce profitable results.

Florida fired manager Fredi Gonzalez Wednesday morning and replaced him with Triple-A coach Edwin Rodriguez. In his managerial debut, Rodriguez led the Marlins to a 7-5 comeback win over the Orioles.

"A win tonight was big, especially for Edwin because it was his first game,” said outfielder Chris Coghlan. “There were a lot of mixed emotions."

Likely the only emotion exuded by Hanley Ramirez was ecstasy. The All-Star shortstop was benched by Gonzalez earlier this year and the two never saw eye-to-eye in the former manager’s three-and-a-half seasons with the club. Ramirez went 1-for-4 with a run scored Wednesday.

After his first big league victory, Rodriguez was presented with the game ball, lineup card and a bottle of champagne to commemorate the occasion. The Fins have won three straight and should stay focused under the regime of their new skipper.

Pick: Marlins

Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Colby Lewis, Texas Rangers (7-4, 3.07 ERA)

The Rangers righty has won three straight starts heading into Friday’s outing with the Houston Astros. Lewis has allowed only four runs on nine hits in 24.0 innings of work. National League teams are hitting just .187 against him including Houston, which fell 5-1 to Texas last Saturday. Lewis pitched 9.0 innings, allowing only one run on two hits.

C.C. Sabathia, New York Yankees (8-3, 3.68 ERA)

The Yankees hefty lefty is heating up, winning four straight starts heading into Friday’s contest with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Sabathia has given up eight runs on 21 hits over 29 innings in that span. In his most recent appearance, he went 8.0 innings, allowing just four hits in a 4-0 shutout against the Mets.

Debuting

Aaron Laffey (0-1, 5.61 ERA)

The Tribe are throwing Laffey into the rotation with David Huff heading to Triple-A. The left-hander has been honing his skills as a starter in Triple-A Columbus while working out of Cleveland’s bullpen for the majority of the MLB season. Laffey hasn’t been overly sharp in 2010, allowing six runs in just 1.1 innings against the Yankees in his last relief outing on May 29. He made 19 starts in 2009, posting a 7-9 record and ERA of 4.44.

This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On June 25 in Baseball History...

1903 - Boston Beaneater Wiley Piatt becomes the only 20th-century pitcher to lose two complete games in one day, falling to Pittsburgh 1-0 and 5-3.

1968 - San Francisco rookie Bobby Bonds becomes the second player to debut with a grand slam as teammate Ray Sadecki blanks the Dodgers 9-0. Bonds does it on his third at-bat. The only other player to hit a grand slam in his first major-league game was William Duggelby of the Philadelphia Nationals in 1898.

1976 - Ranger Toby Harrah becomes the first shortstop in major-league history to go through an entire doubleheader without a fielding chance. At the plate, Harrah makes up for the inactivity, collecting six hits, including a grand slam in the opener and another round-tripper in the nightcap. The Rangers beat the White Sox in the first game 8-4, but lose the nightcap 14-9.

1986 - The Phillies give 41-year-old Steve Carlton his unconditional release and call up Bruce Ruffin to take his place in the starting rotation.

1988 - Cal Ripken, Jr. plays in his 1,000th consecutive game, a 10-3 loss to Boston. Ripken's streak is the sixth-longest in major-league history.

1989 - The Mets' defense does not record a single assist in a 5-1 win over Philadelphia, tying the major-league record set by the Indians in 1945. New York pitchers retire the Phillies on 13 strikeouts, 12 fly outs, and two ground balls to first base.

1995 - Rockies first baseman Andres Galarraga becomes the fourth player to homer in three consecutive innings in an 11-3 win over the Padres. Galarraga, who had seven RBI in the game, went deep in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings and was on deck when the Rockies were retired in the ninth.

1997 - The Brewers scarcely even sniff a hit before Jose Valentin cues Mike Mussina's first offering of the eighth inning off the end of the bat into short right field for a single in Baltimore's 9-1 win. It marks the second time in less than a month that the Orioles ace righthander flirts with a no-hitter deep into a game. Mussina retired the first 25 Cleveland hitters at Camden Yards on May 30 before Sandy Alomar's one-out single in the ninth.

Peavy beat the Cubs on June 11, giving up only two runs over seven innings.

Also on the MLB slate for Friday: San Diego at Florida, Washington at Baltimore, Arizona at Tampa Bay, Minnesota at the Mets, Cleveland at Cincinnati, Detroit at Atlanta, Houston at Texas, Seattle at Milwaukee, St. Louis at Kansas City, Colorado at the Angels, Pittsburgh at Oakland, the Yankees at the Dodgers, Boston at San Francisco, and Toronto at Philadelphia. The Jays/Phillies series (originally scheduled for Toronto but moved due to the G20 Summit) will have former Jays ace Roy Halladay (8-6, 2.43 ERA) taking on Jesse Litsch (0-1, 6.75 ERA). Righthander Halladay has lost three straight outings, surrendering 11 runs over his past 22 innings.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there are four games on the WNBA schedule for Friday, with Phoenix at Connecticut, New York at Tulsa, Washington at Chicago, and Indiana at Seattle. The Fever (8-4 straight-up, 6-6 against-the-spread) knocked off Atlanta 94-91 at home in their last game, with Katie Douglas and Tamika Catchings each scoring 17 points. The Storm (11-2 SU, 9-4 ATS) bounced San Antonio 82-61 last time out, as Swin Cash scored 22 points. Seattle guard Sue Bird is day-to-day for Friday with a strained knee.

Friday's six-pack

Some NFL salary knowledge, pertinent to last season........knowledge is from espn.

-- Bills only spent $3,460,790 on QBs last year. It showed.

-- Rams spent NFL-low $3,270,931 on WRs and didn't get their money worth either, but part of it was their horrendous QB/OL play.

-- Jaguars spent an NFL-high $18,188,450 on running backs.

-- Miami spent $41,649,735 on their OL; no one else in the league spent more than $27.7M. Is their offensive line that good?

-- Giants spent $33,973,330 on their defensive line; the defense wasn't good enough, so coordinator Sheridan got canned. Was it his fault, or were the players who got all that money overrated to begin with?

-- Redskins spent only $3,764,805 on LBs; its just weird to see them not spending a lot in any aingle area. They'll be an interesting team to follow now that Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan are running things.

************************************************

Friday's List of 13: Odds and ends on NBA Draft night.........

13) What kind of way is this to run a business? Portland fired their GM Kevin Pritchard hours before their NBA Draft, but had him run the draft before the door hit his butt on the way out. Has to be an interesting story behind all that. Always thought Pritchard did a good job in Portland.

12) Kentucky had five guys drafted in the first 29 picks, which raises lot of questions, such as.............
-- Why did John Calipari call it a great night for the university? It might be a great night for him, but certainly not for the school.
-- Why was a guy who scored 3.4 ppg in 13 minutes a game drafted in the first round? Daniel Orton didn't start one game last year!!!!
-- At what point will Kentucky have some players who stay in school for more than a year?
-- If UK was so talented last year, how come they didn't win the national title? They didn't even get to the Final Four.

11) The capologist ESPN had on the draft claims that Miami has cleared so much cap room that they'll be able to sign three maximum free agents this summer. Heat could have as much as $46M in cap room to spend.

10) Best moment of the night for me was Da'Sean Butler getting taken in the second round by Miami. Kid's knee is still being rehabbed after being operated on this spring, but its a good investment in future for Miami.

9) Darren Rovell of espn.com quoted a figure of $16,590,240 for what John Wall will earn on his rookie contract- thats three years.

8) If FOX pushes Stephen Strasburg for the All-Star Game and he makes the team, then RA Dickey better make it, too. Dickey is pitching better than the kid, and Strasburg has started out great.

7) Total attendance for Cardinals' three-game series in Toronto: 43,301, another red flag for baseball in Ontario. Albert Pujols isn't a draw?

6) G8 Summit is in Toronto this week, so Blue Jays moved their series to Philadelphia this weekend. Jays will bat last, will be the "home team" and will draw more fans than they would've in Toronto, but Blue Jay fans also lose out on seeing Roy Halladay return to the Rogers Centre. Too bad.

5) Once had a point guard named Milos Vujanic on my NBA fantasy club for two full years; Knicks drafted him 35th in 2002 Draft, later traded him to the Suns. One small problem: apparently, he is the only really good basketball player who didn't want to play in NBA. Never made it here, as in, never came to play in this country. Supposedly, he was very good.

4) Kid from Florida State named Ryan Reid was drafted 57th by Indiana; Chad Ford had him ranked 114th, Jay Bilas said, "I didn't have him in my top 90; he got drafted 57th. Good for him." Mr Reid is already 23 years old; he scored 6.8 ppg in 22.7 mpg for FSU, grabbing four rebounds per game. Maybe he's a great defender. We'll see. Semioles were 22-10, so at least he's been part of a winning nucleus. As always, time will tell.

Reid got traded to Oklahoma City after the draft.

3) Dustin Pedroia went 5-5 with three HRs Thursday, winning the game with an 11th-inning tater, as Boston won 13-11 in Denver. Papelbon is in a funk, blowing two saves in 24 hours, allowing six runs on 24 pitches.

2) Two starting pitchers in the Dodger-Angel game combined to throw 195 pitches. In eight tortuous half-innings; thats 8.13 pitches per out.

1) Rangers have won 11 straight games, the White Sox nine; what do the two streaks have in common? They both played the Pirates during their winning streak. Now my A's host Pittsburgh this weekend. Pressure on Bob Geren's club to right their sinking ship. Its now or never.

Bettor's best friend: Friday's wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

Cubs at White Sox – The red-hot home squad opened as -150 favorites but that moneyline can now be found as low as -134. The total for the game has dropped to 8.5 at some shops after opening at 9.

Tigers at Braves – Atlanta opened as a -175 favorite but most boards are now offering -160.

Astros at Rangers – Texas surfaced as a hefty -320 favorite but that number is available as low as -297.

New York Liberty at Tulsa Shock – The home squad was released as a 1-point underdog but sharp money has moved that spread to 2.5. The total opened at 163 but that number has been bet up to 166.5.

Weather report
(Forecasts are extracted from Weather.com the night before the game.)

Astros at Rangers – A 40-50 percent chance of precipitation in is the forecast with wind blowing at 10 mph from first to third.

Cubs at White Sox – A 13 mph wind is projected to blow from left-center field.

Padres at Marlins – The National Weather Service forecast projects a strong, 19 mph wind to blow in from center field. There is also a 40 percent chance of rain throughout the game.

Tigers at Braves – There is a 30-40 percent chance of rain.

Who’s hot

Phoenix (WNBA) is 4-1 SU and ATS in its last five meetings versus Connecticut.

The White Sox have won nine straight games.

The Phillies have won three in a row and 7-of-10.

Who’s not

The BattleWings (AFL) have dropped eight of their last nine games.

Cleveland has dropped five straight and are 1-9 in its last 10 games.

The A’s had dropped three consecutive games and 7-of-10 going into Thursday.

Key stat

5-0 – Giants record while wearing their “Orange Friday” home jerseys. San Francisco has outscored its opposition 28-7 in those games.

Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

Brazil is will be without two key players for its final Group G match against Portugal on Friday. Kaka is suspended and will be replaced by Julio Baptista while Elano has an injured right ankle and Dani Alves will take his stop in the lineup. For Portugal, midfielder Deco will miss the game with a right hip injury.

Notable quotable

"I would love to go beat the Saints. I know I can still play at a high level. Last year was a great year, but it could have been better [winning the NFC Championship]."

-- Quarterback Brett Favre said, further indicating that he will make a return to the Minnesota Vikings in 2010. The Vikes play New Orleans in the NFL season’s opening game on Sept. 9. The Saints are listed as 4.5-point home favorites with a total of 51.

Tips and notes

- John Isner battled through an 11-hour, 5-minute tennis match over three days to defeat Nicolas Mahut in the second round of Wimbledon. The fifth set alone lasted eight hours and 11 minutes so there is no question Isner will be mentally and physically drained heading into Friday’s early 6 a.m. match with Thiemo de Bakker. Isner did have 24 hours to recover but the toll from the match, as well as the media storm this epic invoked, has to be factored into the odds. Oddsmakers have posted Isner as a +150 underdog versus Mahut (-200).

- In early May it was announced that the interleague series between the Phillies and Blue Jays would be moved from Canada to Philly because of security concerns at the G20 Summit which will be held in Toronto. Bettors need to be reminded that this changes some key factors for the series. Because of the move, the Jays will be the home team at Citizens Bank Park, batting last, and the designated hitter will be in effect. A ninth hitter in the lineup could equate to more OVERS. Also, instead of traveling to Canada the Phils get to relax at home after finishing a three-game sweep of the Indians Wednesday afternoon.

- The Cubs and Mariners ended a three-game set with an extra-inning affair that trickled into Thursday evening on the West Coast. Chicago used six relief pitchers in the 13-inning game and closer Carlos Marmol threw 28 pitches in 1.1 innings. The Cubs had to travel back to the Windy City later than expected for a 3 p.m. start against the red-hot White Sox on Friday. Internal clocks could be out of whack for Cubs players transitioning from the Pacific Time Zone back to the Central Time Zone and the extra-inning game doesn’t help either. The South Siders are a -140 favorite with the resurgent Peavy on the mound.
