BP spill costs up to $2.65B

NEW ORLEANS – BP's mounting costs for capping and cleaning up the Gulf have reached $2.65 billion, the oil giant said Monday, but the company denied reports out of Russia that CEO Tony Hayward is resigning.
The company's expenses climbed $100 million per day over the weekend, according to an SEC filing Monday, as engineers eyed a tropical storm heading toward Mexico that was expected to miss the area but could still generate disruptive waves and winds.
It was a rocky start to the week after BP PLC stock fall 6 percent Friday in New York to a 14-year low. BP has lost more than $100 billion in market value since the deep-water drilling platform it was operating blew up April 20, killing 11 workers and starting the massive leak that has fouled the coastline in four states.
BP said it had received more than 80,000 claims and made almost 41,000 payments, totaling more than $128 million.
BP says the figure does not include a $20 billion fund for Gulf damages it created this month.

Pretty safe to say no other company could survive with these huge mounting costs. God forbid it take any longer than necessary to cap the well, but what would happen if it took a LOT longer? Could BP ever go bankrupt? And if they did, the governments would have to pay to keep this environmental disaster to the minimum as possible.

BP doesn't have enough money to clean up all the mess. When they get down to their last couple of $Billion all the top officers will get Big bonuses, they'll file for bankruptcy and let our government and tax payers pay for the rest!

I dont agree with this. Many of the stations are owned by small business owners that have nothing to do with the spill. Their days are numbered, I agree, but don't hurt the SB guys trying to make a living.

I never bought BP gas, so it isn't a concern of mine. Just a bad situatuion all the way around.
Not sure, But I No Longer buy their Gas. and Hope many more will follow ^!:

I'm with you on this one. Not buying their gas doesn't hurt them. The best way to get them would be to sell their stock if you own it

Sorry, I'm old fashion. But Not looking to hurt the small Business Owner ( my wife is one )

But if I have a choice, I will bypass a BP Station .

Not sure how other States are, but around me...there are 3-4 Gas Stations around a 1-3 block area...so I have a Choice where to get my Gas.

i never bought gas from them because their prices were always higher... even before the spill they seemed to be 7 to 10 cents higher than race trac stations.

I don't think they're going under but this is definitely going to hurt for many years to come.

If you own a gas station couldn't you simply just buy your gas from Mobil instead of BP and put up a new sign ?

Are you kidding? Have we forgotten how much money they made with the run up of gas prices, which still continues to this day? Don't feel sorry for these bastards. Worse thing to happen to them is their profits take a dip.

BP owns / has shares in a lot of companies operating all over the world. Ive worked on many wells own by BP they wont go bankrupt. Not saying that 2.65B isnt a lot or the shares they are loosing, im sure its a huge dent but it wont BR them. Plus they have a lot of natural gas projects/pipelines/gas plants just in Alberta alone that many companies would love to own if they ever needed to sell off a few

I get the point you're trying to make but you do realize that not buying their gas makes zero effect on their bottom line. Besides the fact that BP doesn't own most of the BP stations fact is you're more than likely still buying BP gas and just don't know it. Oil companies frequently buy each others gas when it is economically fesible to do so. So that Shell or Texaco station you do buy from, well there is a good chance that Shell bought that gas from BP and it just has about 1 quart of Shell "additives" in an 8000 gallon truck and then it gets called Shell gas at that point. But BP still made a majority of the profit even though it's being sold at a Shell station.

BP will be fine. Once the leak is stopped they finish the job. Their stock is down over 50% from it's 52 week high. It's a good time to buy BP....

Don't quote me but I believe they are locked into contracts with BP for a certain amount of years

I would imagine this is also the case, many of these gas stations may also be franchises, tied in with BP companies.

One thing we should remember, BP didn't cause the spill, it's the idiots that they hired to drill the well. It's a contractual thing. Blame the jerks that were drilling the well.

Worst case for BP is they'd siphon off their US business into BP America Inc or similar, and let it bankrupt whilst the worldwide operation continues under the London/other name.
