Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Mets at Florida Marlins (+105, 9.5)

The Marlins have been struggling of late, but maybe all the team needed was a change of venue.

After losing three straight to the Padres at home over the weekend, Florida is calling San Juan, Puerto Rico its new home.

"It feels like home," Hanley Ramirez said. "There are a lot of Dominican people here."

The Mets and Marlins began a three-game series at Hiram Bithorn Stadium on Monday. Florida bounced back in a big way, defeating New York 10-3. Interim manager Edwin Rodriguez, who’s only been on the job a little over the week, is a native of Puerto Rico so the victory was even more special.

"I can tell you, it feels just unbelievable," Rodriguez said. "I'm very aware of what it means for me, for my family, and really for the whole [island]. It's like a dream come true for me."

With homeland emotions undoubtedly factoring into Florida’s motivations, look for the Fins to hand the Metropolitans another loss Tuesday.

Pick: Marlins

Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox (-125, 9.5)

Within the span of three days, the Red Sox lost three key players.

Second baseman Dustin Pedroia was placed on the 15-day DL after fracturing his left foot Friday, pitcher Clay Buchholz injured his knee running the bases Saturday and catcher Victor Martinez broke his left thumb Sunday.

And did we mention that the Sox have been without leadoff hitter Jacoby Ellsbury and ace Josh Beckett for the better part of the season? Still, Boston continues to plug away and trails the Yankees by just two games in the division.

"There is no breaking point," said Bill Hall. "We're the Boston Red Sox. We expect to win. We're the Red Sox. We're supposed to win. That's the mentality we have in here. Guys know they need to step up, and we've had guys step up all year long. That's going to continue to happen."

With the state the Tampa clubhouse is in right now (Longoria/Upton fallout), nine one-armed Bostonians could defeat the Rays.

Pick: Red Sox

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Cliff Lee (6-3, 2.39), Seattle Mariners

Complete game winning efforts in three of your last four starts will always land you on this list. Lee has been dominant of late and contending teams are salivating over trade possibilities.

Seattle’s southpaw most recently silenced NL opponent Chicago in a complete game shutout. Lee positioned himself with an 0-2 count to 19 Cubs during the game.

“You just don’t see that,” manager Don Wakamatsu said. “Pretty special.”

Lee is 6-1 over his last seven starts and is 4-0 with a 1.26 ERA in his last four at Yankee Stadium.

Brandon Morrow (5-5, 4.50), Toronto Blue Jays

Morrow had a rough start to the 2010 campaign, which eventually led him to a minor-league assignment, but the hard-throwing righty has righted the ship recently.

Morrow is only 2-1 in his last five starts but didn’t yield more than two runs in any of them and went at least 6.0 innings in each. He allowed a total of five runs during that stretch (34.0 innings, 1.32 ERA) with no homers while recording 25 strikeouts.

"This kid is just going to get better all the time," manager Cito Gaston said. "We're talking No. 1 or 2 starter one of these days as far as rotation. He's got that kind of stuff."

Slumping

Dontrelle Willis (2-2, 4.90), Arizona Diamondbacks

Willis went to Arizona looking for a fresh start for his career but things have remained the same. The lefty only lasted 2.1 innings in his most recent outing after walking seven hitters.

"I can't try to be too fine," Willis said. "I just have to hit the target. Everybody's been asking, but I just have to do it. I have to be aggressive. I have to hit the target."

Willis’ control problems have equated to 18 walks in his last 21.1 innings on the mound. Neither he nor the team has won a game (0-3) since his first start with the Diamondbacks on June 5. Willis is 1-3 in five career starts versus St. Louis with a hefty 5.53 ERA.

Matt Cain (6-6, 2.72), San Francisco Giants

San Fran’s No. 2 starter is usually in the “Streaking” segment of this article but Cain has struggled over his last two starts. The right-hander was knocked out of a game last Thursday after giving up seven earned runs to the Astros in only 2.2 innings of work.

Houston touched Cain up for nine hits and two bombs in that 7-5 loss. Cain has lost both of his last starts and combined for only five strikeouts in those two games.

This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On June 29 in Baseball History...

1916 - The Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds played a nine-inning game with just one baseball.

1923 - Brooklyn's Jack Fournier went 6-for-6 with a home run, two doubles and three singles. The Dodgers beat the Philadelphia Phillies 14-5.

1937 - Chicago Cubs first baseman Rip Collins played an entire game without a putout or an assist.

1941 - Joe DiMaggio singles against Washington knuckleballer Dutch Leonard in the sixth inning in the first game of a doubleheader to tie George Sisler's A.L. consecutive-game hit record of forty-one (41). In the nightcap he collects a seventh-inning single off of Walt Masterson to set the record at forty-two (42) games.

1961 - With three home runs at Philadelphia, including a tenth-inning shot to win 8-7, Willie Mays becomes the fourth major-league player with three or more home runs twice in one season. Manager Gene Mauch's efforts to conceal his starting pitcher and force Alvin Dark's hand has a Phillies lineup including hurlers Don Ferrarese (batting leadoff, playing center field), Jim Owens (third, right field), Chris Short (seventh, catcher), and Ken Lehman (ninth, pitcher) against San Francisco. When Dark sends a lefty to the mound, Mauch replaces Ferrarese. Dark then replaces Billy O'Dell with Sam Jones. Mauch replaces Lehman with Dallas Green after two batters. All the maneuvering takes three hours and twenty (20) minutes.

1968 - Detroit's Jim Northrup hit his third grand slam in a week and the Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox 5-2.

1969 - On Billy Williams Day in Chicago, the Cubs outfielder passes Stan Musial's National League record for consecutive games played (896). The Cubs sweep the Cardinals 3-1 and 12-1 before 41,060.

1977 - Willie Stargell hits his 400th career home run, this one coming off Eric Rasmussen of the Cardinals.

1984 - Pete Rose plays in his 3,309th major-league game, surpassing Carl Yastrzemski as the all-time leader. Rose goes 0-for-5, but Montreal beats Cincinnati 7-3.

1986 - Detroit beats Milwaukee 9-5 in the first game of a doubleheader split, making Tigers manager Sparky Anderson the first manager ever to win six-hundred games in each league.

1987 - In the first game of Philadelphia's doubleheader sweep of Pittsburgh, Steve Bedrosian records his twelfth consecutive save (in twelve appearances) to break the major-league record set by Sparky Lyle in 1975.

1990 - Oakland's Dave Stewart and the Dodgers Fernando Valenzuela both throw no-hitters. Stewart blanks the Blue Jays 5-0, and a few hours later Valenzuela beats the Cardinals 6-0.

1992 - Oakland's Dennis Eckersley sets the new standard with his twenty-sixth straight save of the season.

1995 - The Dodgers' Hideo Nomo struck out thirteen Colorado Rockies in a 3-0 victory, giving him fifty (50) strikeouts in four (4) games. That broke the Los Angeles record of forty-nine (49) over four (4) games accomplished three (3) times by Sandy Koufax, the last thirty (30) years earlier.

2003 - Eric Byrnes hit for the cycle and matched a franchise record with five hits in Oakland's 5-2 win over San Francisco.

Daily Sports Roundup: June 29

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Yankees host the Mariners, the Dodgers battle with the Giants, and the Round of 16 wraps up at the World Cup in South Africa.

Chasing the World Cup . . .

The Round of 16 wraps up at the World Cup on Tuesday with Paraguay vs. Japan and Spain vs. Portugal. Paraguay took top spot in Group F with five points, and they're slight +120 favorites against Japan (+225), with draw odds of +220. Japan ended up in second place in Group E with six points. Spain is then set at EVEN in their game against Portugal (+285), with draw odds of +220. The Spaniards claimed top spot in Group H with six points, while Portugal settled for second in Group G with five points.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Tuesday has Oakland at Baltimore, Toronto at Cleveland, Tampa Bay at Boston, Detroit at Minnesota, the White Sox at Kansas City, Texas at the Angels, and Seattle at the Yankees. Cliff Lee (6-3, 2.39 ERA) is slated to go up against Phil Hughes (10-1, 3.17 ERA) in that last matchup. Lefthander Lee is coming off consecutive complete-game wins, holding the Cubs and Reds to a combined one run over those 18 innings of work. Righthander Hughes has picked up the victory in each of his last five mound trips, and New York is 9-1 in his last 10 starts.

Meanwhile the National League on Tuesday offers up the Mets at Florida, Philadelphia at Cincinnati, Washington at Atlanta, Pittsburgh at the Cubs, Arizona at St. Louis, Colorado at San Diego, Houston at Milwaukee, and the Dodgers at San Francisco. John Ely (3-5, 3.86 ERA) matches up with Matt Cain (6-6, 2.72 ERA) in that last game. Righthander Ely took a hard-luck loss last time out, surrendering just one earned run on three hits over seven innings against the Angels. Righthander Cain was pounded by the Astros in his last mound trip, giving up seven runs in just 2 2-3 innings.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

As well, the WNBA offers up five games on Tuesday, with Phoenix at Atlanta, Connecticut at Tulsa, San Antonio at Seattle, New York at Los Angeles, and Indiana at Washington. The Fever and Mystics have identical 9-5 records through 14 games, with Indiana 8-6 against-the-spread, and Washington 9-4-1 ATS. The Fever held off Chicago for a 70-64 victory last time out, with Ebony Hoffman scoring a team-high 13 points for Indiana in that contest. The Mystics got past Phoenix 95-85 last time out, as Crystal Langhorne poured in 31 points and Lindsey Harding pitched in with 24 points.

Bettor's best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

Line off the board

Pirates at Cubs – The total for the game is OTB due to the uncertainty of wind speed and direction at Wrigley Field.

Line to keep an eye on

San Antonio Silver Stars at Seattle Storm – The opening total of 151 for this game has dropped to 149 and as low as 148.5 in some markets.

Connecticut Sun at Tulsa Shock – The home squad surfaced as 6-point pups but has moved to 7.5-point underdogs.

Mariners at Yankees – New York opened as a -138 favorite but that number has risen to -160 on a few boards.

Phillies at Reds – Cincinnati was originally posted as -113 home chalk but can now be found as high as -134.

Astros at Brewers – Milwaukee is playing some good ball right now and has moved from -220 favorites to -255 chalk in some markets.

Rangers at Angels – The total for the game has dropped to 9.5 after opening at 10.

Dodgers at Giants – This total has jumped from 7 to 7.5. Two of the three games earlier this year in this series went OVER.

Weather report
(Forecasts are extracted from Weather.com the night before the game.)

Athletics at Orioles – The National Weather Service forecast projects a 17 mph wind to blow out to right-center field.

Pirates at Cubs – A 15 mph wind is expected to blow in from left-center field.

Mariners at Yankees – The forecast calls for a 17 mph wind to blow out to left field.

Nationals at Braves – There is a 40 percent chance of rain throughout the game.

Diamondbacks at Cardinals – A 15 mph wind is expected to blow out to right-center field.

Who’s hot

The Orioles have won four straight games, earning 4.18 units on the moneyline.

Going into Monday, the Padres had won three in a row and seven of their last 10 games.

Indiana (WNBA) is 4-1 SU and ATS in its last five games.

Who’s not

Pittsburgh had dropped six straight and 8-of-10 as of Monday.

Tulsa (WNBA) has dropped seven consecutive games, going 1-6 ATS during that stretch.

The Dodgers are 2-8 in their last 10 games.

Key stat

16-41 – Detroit’s record against division foe Minnesota in its last 57 meetings against the Twins.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco may return to the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Cincinnati Reds. Polanco has missed the team's last three games with a sore elbow. Polanco is batting .318 with five home runs and 27 RBIs for Philadelphia, which has won eight of its last 11 games. The Phils’ lineup is potent, but it’s even more dangerous with Polanco in it.

Notable quotable

“I was just thinking about I'm not coming out the game until I give up a hit or a home run, whichever one comes first.”

-- Diamondbacks pitcher Edwin Jackson said about his pitch count during the no-hitter.

Tips and notes

- The Yankees have begun the process of limiting innings for the young ace of their staff – Phil Hughes. The righty, with a 10-1 record and 3.17 ERA, had a start skipped last week and will be pitching Tuesday on nine days’ rest. The off-time could have been good for Hughes but it also could have thrown him out of rhythm. Most veteran starting pitchers want to work on a regular routine. Hughes will have his hands full opposing Cliff Lee and the Yankees could have him on a tight pitch count in his first game back.

- The Mets-Marlins three-game set is being played at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The only dirt present on the field at the ballpark is around the bases, the pitcher’s mound and home plate – not between the bases. The venue also recently put down artificial turf so the field plays even faster. Injuries are very possible on artificial grass but so are errors because the ball gets to fielders so quickly. A bettor might want to look at a HITS+RUNS+ERRORS total wager in the two remaining games of this series. Monday’s game went OVER.

- Portugal has historically been overshadowed by Spain, and things are no different in the realm of soccer. You may not remember, but the Portuguese finished fourth in the ’06 World Cup and this year’s team feels like Rodney Dangerfield – NO RESPECT! Winger Simao said they don’t like how, “Everybody is talking about Spain all the time.” All Portugal has done is won 19 straight matches, scored the most points of any team in the tourney and only surrendered three goals in its last 19 games. Portugal and its star striker Christiano Ronaldo have been afforded a +295 moneyline and +.5-point (-115) spread Tuesday.

Tuesday's six-pack

-- Steelers' starting tackle Willie Colon injured his achilles and could be out for the entire football season. Tough offseason for Pittsburgh.

-- Pirates are 8-2 against Cubs this year, 18-48 against everyone else.

-- Braves' rookie Heyward is on DL with thumb injury; VMartinez also has thumb injury for Boston, but no DL for him yet.

-- Nationals scored one run in losing Strasburg's last three starts.

-- Detroit reliever Zumaya suffered what looked to be a severe elbow injury Monday night in Minnesota. Lets hope its not that bad.

-- South Carolina won first game of best-of-3 College World Series over UCLA Monday night; Game 2 is Tuesday night in Omaha.

**********************************************

Tuesday's List of 13 (+1): Our weekly look at AL teams........

14) Orioles-- Why do umpires get all theatrical when they call a batter out on strikes? Never understood this. Todd Tichenor is umpiing home plate in Atlanta Tuesday; home team is 15-0 when he calls balls/strikes.

13) Indians-- Matt LaPorta was big prospect they got when they stupidly traded CC Sabathia to Milwaukee. In 304 career ABs, LaPorta is hitting a paltry .237, with eight HRs, 28 RBI. He's 25, so he's getting close to not being young anymore. He gets another chance with Branyan getting dealt.

12) Mariners-- 14/30 teams play the Thursday after All-Star break, other 16 play Friday. Dodgers play Sunday night before the break, then have to go to St Louis for a Thursday game. All thirty teams should just re-start the season Friday. Why should some teams gain an advantage?

11) Royals-- 2nd in AL with 34 RBI from leadoff position, but rank 9th in MLB; seven of top eight RBI spots amongst leadoff position are from NL teams, which is little weird, seeing as pitchers bat 9th in NL. Playing better since Ned Yost took over, by the way.

10) A's-- In seven games he's played this year, Coco Crisp is hitting .360 with seven runs scored; in their other 70 games, the A's leadoff hitter has scored 44 runs, with a .314 on-base %age. Think they missed Crisp?

9) Blue Jays-- Scored 17 runs in last seven games, as they slowly fade in tough AL East. Hitting .223 as a team this month, with .296 on-base %. Bright spot has been lefty starter Romero, who is 6-4, 2.83 this season.

8) White Sox-- Floyd was 2-6, 6.93 in his first 11 starts; in his last four outings, he is 1-1, 0.93, but Pale Hose scored total of only six runs as they split those four games. They're 9-1 in Freddy Garcia's last ten starts.

7) Twins-- Carl Pavano is 5th in MLB in WHIP; in his last two starts, he beat Halladay/Santana, not bad. He has a 2.82 road ERA; teams are batting .226 against him on the road, .251 at Target Field (5-3, 3.81).

6) Rays-- In their three game series at the Trop this past weekend, DBack starting pitchers threw 20.1 innings, gave up only four hits. Crawford has a bad shoulder, is hoping to DH in Boston this week. They need him, and they need to turn things around while the Red Sox are banged up. Rays are hitting .170 over their last six games.

5) Tigers-- First six guys reached base in showdown game against Liriano and Twins Monday night; Detroit scored four times, held on for 7-5 win and first place in a division that has become a three-team race.

4) Red Sox-- Ravaged by injuries right now, but lead MLB in scoring, at 5.5 runs/game. Pirates (3.3) are lowest scoring team. Six highest scoring teams in MLB all reside in the American League.

3) Angels-- Scoring 5.18 runs/road game, but only 4.34 at home; very big series with Rangers this week, as Halos try to close 4.5-game deficit out west. Texas is only 18-17 on the road, so this is an interesting series, as Vlad Guerrero returns to Orange County.

2) Rangers-- Bad news last week, as sale of team didn't go through, which will make it tougher for Texas to add salary (Oswalt, a catcher) as July 31 trade deadline approaches. Middle of lineup (Kinsler-Hamilton-Guerrero- Young) is truly fearsome though. Can the young pitchers hold up?

1) Bronx-- They have to do something about their radiocasts; they're just not at a professional level, unless you're aiming for professional comedy. Play-by-play guy John Sterling is a cartoon character, but at least he is competent, albeit a self-promoting buffoon. Sidekick Suzyn Waldman is simply terrible, and thats being nice. Bronx fans deserve a better listen.
