Utley to undergo thumb surgery Thursday Chase Utley - 2B - PHI - Jul. 1Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports that Chase Utley will undergo surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb on Thursday.
Zolecki originally reported that the surgery had already taken place, but that doesn't appear to be the case. It's not known how long Utley will be sidelined, though Peter Gammons estimated "five or six weeks" earlier this afternoon. Either way, we can expect the Phillies to be actively looking for a second baseman or a third baseman in the next month. If healthy, Placido Polanco could possibly switch back to second base.
