Titans' Simms arrested in NYC for driving while stoned

NEW YORK (AP)

Police say Tennessee Titans backup quarterback Chris Simms told them he'd been smoking marijuana before he was stopped while driving Thursday - but he says he was just talking about cigarettes.

Simms, a son of former New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms, called the case against him "very weak" as he left a Manhattan courthouse after his arraignment on charges of driving while impaired by drugs.

"I think it speaks for itself," Simms, 29, said as he walked to a waiting car, with his pregnant wife on his arm. Released without bail, he's due back in court Aug. 23 on the misdemeanor and traffic-violation charges.
Police and prosecutors said Simms slurred his words, had bloodshot eyes and smelled of marijuana when stopped early Thursday at a downtown Manhattan police checkpoint, with his wife, Danielle, in the car.
According to a court complaint, Simms told an officer he'd been "smoking marijuana in the car earlier."

But Simms' lawyer, Nathan Semmel, said the quarterback didn't say that, and wouldn't do it.

"My client never admitted to smoking marijuana that night. He admitted to smoking cigarettes that night," Semmel said.
He called it "absurd" to suggest that Simms would drive impaired while his wife, eight months pregnant with their second child, was riding along.

"There's nothing in his record, whatsoever, that suggests that he would be that reckless," Semmel said.

He suggested two other unidentified passengers in the car's back seat "might be the sources of the odor" of marijuana that police reported.
The New York Police Department had no immediate comment.

If convicted, Simms could face up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine. He didn't take prosecutors up on offer to plead guilty Thursday in exchange for a $500 fine, three days of community service and a six-month license revocation.
The Titans, in a statement, said they were aware of the case and gathering more information about it.

Simms has started 16 games during his six-year NFL career and is in his second stint with the Titans. He came to Tennessee in 2008 after being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, then returned to the Titans after playing for the Denver Broncos last year as an unrestricted free agent. He was a third-round draft pick by Tampa Bay in 2003.

In 2006, Simms had emergency surgery to remove his spleen, which ruptured during a game against Carolina.

His father is now an announcer and analyst for CBS Sports and led the Giants to two Super Bowls, playing 14 seasons with the team.

Umm, the cops said he admitted it, Simms says he never admitted it.
Let's see, his daddy never got in one ounce of trouble in his life which includes his playing career, and is one of the most respected men in the NFL ever.
His kid, Chris, up until now has never gotten into an ounce of trouble before this so called incident.
Lawyer says case is weak...........
I'll give the kid the benefit of the doubt.
I'll give the kid more than the benefit of the doubt.

So what you're saying, then, is that the NYPD has some axe to grind with Chris Simms and his pregnant wife. They are stating he had bloodshot eyes, slurred speach and reeked of marijuana.

So basically, you're saying the cops are lying. What is their motive? The NYPD doesn't exactly have a storied history of harrassing professional athletes, especially the son of one the biggest icons in NY sports history.

The NYPD does have a storied history of lying and corruption in general, though. I've been around enough cops in behind-the-scene settings to know that their arrest report should never, ever be taken as the gospel. Police officers will lie their ass off to get credit for a bust, espeically when they really need one.

You guys think that because a cop said it, then he's guilty? Have some respect for the due process of law. And understand this......just because a cop said it doesn't make it true.

Especially in cases involving actors, sports stars, celebs..............
Cops love to be known as the one that busted Alec Baldwin for DUI, or Linsay Lohan for whatever, or LT.........
The cop will embellish the story so they can get the credit.

I grew up in NYC, I lived 15 feet, 4 buidings away on East 5th Street from the precinct house where they filmed NYPD Blue, I got to meet the real cops and the actors, I know the shit they pull.

Chris Simms’s Marijuana Denial Is Doobious, at Best

Tennessee Titan Chris Simms was arrested on West Houston Street for driving while under the influence of marijuana last month. In court shortly after, he claimed that when he said “I was smoking in the car,” he meant he was smoking cigarettes. But court records uncovered by the Post today tell a different story: “I took four puffs,” cops reported that Simms said during his arrest. “There's nothing in the car. I smoked everything before.” As cigarette smokers know, one doesn't tend to refer to smoking in terms of “puffs” and “everything” unless it's something a bit on the stronger side. Still, Simms claims that cops had no probable cause to pull him over and is fighting to have his comments thrown out. And we mostly just wanted to share this story for the chance to use the word “doobious” in a headline.
