Do you view sports-betting as you against the bookie or you against your fellow bettors?

When I first started out I thought it was me against the bookie, now I've come to believe its me against you, and that I need to bet into good numbers before someone else does.
Who know's I may change this view again.
One thing I know for sure is that sports-betting is a constant evolution, always changing to avoid losing that vig.

The bookie is just an agent, who collects a commission, just like any other agent.
The bookie wants 10,000 dollars on the Redskins at 11:10 odds, and 10,000 dollars on the Giants at 11:10 odds.
Collects 11K on loser, pays 10K on winner, he's not your enemy, he's providing a service.

A third option in this question might be you against the "Oddsmaker" or "Linesmaker" but I guess some people would just consider that the bookie.

against the bookie since you are relying on him to pay you. An exchange is against a player.

I consider the challenge of betting to be me against "consensus opinion" since the line is consensus opinion. Thats all I've ever really felt. If that makes sense...

Almost like stocks its you vs mr market (consensus opinion)

Totally agree, that's exactly the way I see it

If it was me against another player it would be pari-mutual as in horse racing. I like the consensus opinion option.

Think it's the book, or the linesmaker. Just because you beat other people to a line doesn't guarantee you'll win or get a payout.

When you play blackjack at a table, it's you against the dealer...not you against the other players. I look at betting sports the same way. I actually get kind of psyched when I hear stories about other people beating the books...although...

Not to hijack this thread, but I would be curious about some opinions on this. A friend of mine is a bit of a degenrate gambler...she has plenty of money to play, but went on a major losing streak betting sports...dropped something like 14k in three months. She called me in tears and begs me to help her out of the hole. I told her there are no guarantees, I could just as easily hit a losing streak, etc. But she had me take over her account and start playing for her.

Wouldn't you know it...I suddenly catch fire and go on a huge roll. I end up winning back her entire 14k as well as an additional 2k in a matter of TWO WEEKS. She flips out, says thank you so much, sends me "you're the best" texts, e-mails, etc...and basically does everything except offer to give me a single penny of what I won her. We had no prior arrangement set up, but Jesus Christ...if I was in that same situation, I think the very least I could do would be let whoever won me the additional 2k just keep that for themselves. And yes she's hot, but I'm already happily spoken for...just in case some of you come in here and say "harhar, she's planning to pay you back in another way..."

Thoughts?

I've come to view it as an internal battle with myself. Very rarely does the bookie beat me with his line, but it's usually myself that causes the stress and heartache that lead to bankroll blowups. Frankly, I haven't thought about the sportsbook except if he pays or not.
