Long Island Man Blows Off Arm Shooting Fireworks

Suffolk County, NY, United States (AHN) - A 36-year-old Long Island, N.Y. man blew his arm off while igniting illegally-bought fireworks this Fourth of July weekend.

Eric Smith remains in critical condition in the hospital, where surgeons were unable to reattach his arm. He was attempting to fire a mortar bomb out of a metal pipe, but he didn’t get out of the way in time.
Suffolk County Police told the New York Daily News that Smith was leaning over the pipe when it went off.
He could face criminal charges for possessing and igniting the fireworks

Every year, people from the east coast drive down to the south and buy illegal fireworks for the 4th. And every year, something like this happens.

I'm sorry, I have no sympathy for a fully grown, 36 year old man, who takes what amounts to a stick of dynamite, illegally bought at that, sticks it in a pipe, leans over pipe before it detinate.
Could have injured more than his sorry arm.

He has to do 18 months for that.

This isn't something you just bought at a store in SC or somewhere where it is legal to buy firecrackers.

This has to be display grade stuff for pros or some kind of homemade pipe bomb.

I wouldn't prosecute the guy though ( unless someone else was injured), an arm is enough to lose.

Are they not illegal in the south? Are they legal/illegal by region in the U.S.? Doesn't it go by state law?
