Thursday's Afternoon Tips

It’s a busy Thursday in Major League Baseball with 12 games on the schedule, including four afternoon battles. We’ll get to see a pair of hurlers in a series finale in Denver that could start in next Tuesday’s All-Star Game. Let’s take a look at the businessman specials on the diamond.

Pirates (30-53, -696) at Astros (33-51, -529) – 2:05 p.m. EDT

Not much has gone right in Pittsburgh when it comes to baseball. Yet they do have some reason to be happy at the moment as the Pirates have won four of their last six contests. Houston hasn’t had much luck either, having dropped six of its past 10 tests.

The Pirates will task Ross Ohlendorf (1-6, 4.39) to close out this series on a high note. You can look at the right-hander’s record and think he’s garbage, but the numbers are misleading. In the nine losses the Bucs have had with Ohlendorf on the hill, he allowed three or fewer earned runs in five of those games. Adding insult to injury is a total lack of run support for him as Pittsburgh has crossed the plate three times or fewer in seven of those defeats.

Houston counters with Roy Oswalt (5-10, 3.32) on Thursday afternoon. Oswalt can’t catch a break is seems right now as he’s lost his last three starts, which were all setbacks for the Astros. He pitched well enough to win a pair of those games but his offense mustered a total of two runs in his last three appearances.

The ‘under’ was the smart wager to take on with the Pirates when on the road, evidenced by a 6-3-1 mark. Houston has watched the ‘over’ post a 4-2-1 record in its past seven games at Minute Maid Park. However, the ‘Stros have seen the ‘under’ go 8-4-1 when listed as home faves this season.

Angels (46-40, +339) at White Sox (44-38, +448) – 2:05 p.m. EDT

There are plenty of series for any team during the season that can potentially make or break their playoff hopes. This is indeed one of those battles with the White Sox sitting only a game behind Detroit for first place in the AL Central and the Halos 3 ½-games in back of Texas in the American League West.

Ervin Santana (8-6, 3.95) gets the starting nod from the Angels for the final match of this four-game set. Santana hasn’t pitched on the road since early June, but he’s made the most of it by winning three of his last four starts outside of the O.C.

Chicago will give the ball over to John Danks (7-7, 3.58) for this contest. The White Sox have failed to capture victory in his last two starts, which makes sense as he’s been a bit streaky this season. The ChiSox went 4-1 to start the year with Danks on the hill. Since then, they’ve seen him go into a 1-5 slump to along with his recent struggles. It also doesn’t help that Danks is 1-3 with a 3.16 earned run average in seven career starts against Los Angeles.

What the White Sox do have for bettors to back up their wagers is that they’ve won nine of their last 10 games at U.S. Cellular Field. The ‘under’ cashed in six of those fixtures. Los Angeles has dropped five of its past seven games this year. The Halos have watched the ‘over’ has hit in six of their past eight road contests.

Giants (43-40, -195) at Brewers (37-47, -1,087) – 2:10 p.m. EDT

Could the Giants actually be swinging big bats again? It looks like that is a possibility after scoring 26 runs in their last four games. Bettors have taken note that San Francisco has won three of those four tests.

San Fran will look to Barry Zito (7-4, 3.75) to keep the good feelings going. Zito didn’t get the win against the Rockies, but he did enough to help the Giants to win 11-8 last Saturday in Denver. It was their first victory with the southpaw on the mound since a 5-4 triumph at home against Oakland on June 12. Zito has been a bit more of a risk on the road this season (2-3, 4.86) for gamblers over his outings at AT&T Park (5-1, 2.83).

Manny Parra (3-5, 4.45) is coming off of a 12-5 win for the Brewers in St. Louis on July 3. At Miller Park, however, Parra has been forgettable with a 1-3 record and an ERA of 4.36.

Milwaukee has won its last three games as a home underdog. San Francisco has lost six of its last nine as a road favorite against left-handed pitching.

Cardinals (45-38, -834) at Rockies (45-38, +64) – 3:10 p.m. EDT

As if a battle between two possible playoff teams isn’t enough, we’re getting a pair of the better pitchers facing off in the Senior Circuit. The only problem is that they are both coming off of shaky performances.

St. Louis’s Chris Carpenter (9-2, 3.16) has been one of the most reliable pitchers in the game with his team winning 13 of his 18 starts. But you’re only as good as your last start for some, which isn’t good for Carpenter. He lasted just three innings after allowing seven earned runs on nine hits as the Brew Crew rolled to a 12-5 road win last Saturday.

Ubaldo Jimenez (14-1, 2.27) has been on another planet when taking the mound for the Rockies this year. Colorado has won all but two of his 17 starts in 2010. But Jimenez has been vulnerable as of late by giving up 17 earned runs in his last three starts. To give you an idea how big a drop-off that is for the Rockies’ ace, he gave up 13 earned runs in his first 14 starts of the year. Gamblers can take heart in the fact that he is 5-0 with a 3.94 ERA at Coors Field this season.

Colorado has dropped four of its last six games this year as a home “chalk” against teams from the National League Central this year. The ‘under’ is 4-2 in those games.

Carpenter has only been a road ‘dog 10 times since joining the Cardinals in 2004. St. Louis has gone 7-3 in this situation.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cincinnati Reds at Philadelphia Philles (-105, 9)

It's a pitching rematch from June 28 when the Reds' Johnny Cueto outdueled the Phillies' Kyle Kendrick, but a repeat performance is not necessarily in order.

In a statistical oddity, Cueto has allowed only one earned run over his past three starts, giving him a 0.45 ERA during that span.

But he has given up 20 hits in his last 20 innings and managed to work out of some serious jams. In his last start, the Cubs stranded 17 baserunners to help salvage a no-decision for Cueto.

"(Cueto) was struggling, big time," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "He had trouble getting strike one. That was the problem. He threw a lot of near-strikes."

The Phillies have finally found their offensive rhythm and Cueto can't keep dodging bullets forever.

Pick: Phillies

Minnesota Twins at Toronto Blue Jays (-130, 9)

They say good things come in threes, so let's ride this one like a charm.

All three previous meeting this season between these teams went over the total, yielding double-digits in runs in each totalling 13, 13 and 11.

Both teams are coming off three consecutive overs, with the Twins' games tallying 14, 11 and 13 runs during the span to the Blue Jays' totals of 14, 13 and 13.

To add to the expected hit parade, both teams are sending struggling pitchers to the mound - Twins' righty Scott Baker and Jays' lefty Brett Cecil.

Both pitchers sport ERAs that are above six over their last three outings, further setting the stage for a high-scoring game.

Pick: Over

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streakers

Mat Latos (9-4, 2.62) San Diego Padres

The 6-foot-6 Latos is 4-0 in his last five starts and has allowed only one earned run in his past three outings for a total of 20 2/3 innings and an ERA of 0.44.

His last start was an eight-inning, four-hit shutout against Astros ace Roy Oswalt in which Latos did not allow a runner to advance past first base.

The key for Latos has been fastball location. He uses it to get ahead of hitters, which opens the door to his other pitches.

"Latos had his fastball moving pretty good," said Houston's Hunter Pence. "I think that late movement, I felt like I was right on it and pounded it into the ground."

Tommy Hunter (5-0, 1.98) Texas Rangers

Hunter is 5-0 in his six starts this season and seems to be getting better with age.

He threw seven-plus innings of one-run ball against the White Sox in his last outing on July 3, his 24th birthday.

"He's pounding the strike zone, not making mistakes in the middle of the plate and executing his pitches," Rangers manager Ron Washington said of Hunter. "When you do that, you get the results he's getting. Right now he's executing very well. He's throwing strikes, keeping the ball in play. He's doing everything we'd like to see a pitcher do."

Helping Hunter's winning streak and shrinking ERA is the fact that he has not allowed a home run all season.

Slumpers

Brett Cecil (7-5, 4.19) Toronto Blue Jays

Cecil is 0-3 in his last four starts and has been shelled for 29 hits and 17 earned runs in those 21 2/3 innings.

Cecil, who has a 9.20 ERA over his past three starts, held the Mets to only four hits in his last outing but issued six walks to settle for a no-decision.

"The ball just keeps drifting up a little bit," said Cecil. "I'm unbelievably frustrated, obviously. The great thing about it is you've just got to keep pitching."

Roy Oswalt (10-5, 3.72) Houston Astros

Even though he's 0-2 in his last three starts, it might not be fair to call Oswalt a slumper.

The Astros gave their ace only two runs over that stretch so he would have had to pitch shutouts to get a W.

In fact, Oswalt did throw seven scoreless innings in his last outing against the Padres but settled for a no-decision when his team failed to score a run.

"I haven't seen [Oswalt] that good in a while," said San Diego's Tony Gwynn Jr. "He threw the ball lights-out today. Sometimes you've got to tip your cap to the guy on the bump -- he was throwing the ball very well. He had all four of his pitches working."

However, Oswalt's previous two starts were less than stellar, allowing 13 hits and nine earned runs in only 11.2 innings. Maybe he's saving his best stuff for his new team after the All-Star break.

This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On July 8 in Baseball History...

1902 - John McGraw, accused by Ban Johnson of trying to wreck the Baltimore and Washington clubs, negotiates his release from the Orioles and officially signs to manage the Giants at $11,000 a year. McGraw then swings the sale of the Orioles towards the Giants and the Reds.

1918 - Babe Ruth's blast over the fence in Fenway scores Amos Strunk as the Red Sox win 1-0 over Cleveland. Prevailing rules regarding the winning run scoring ahead of the home run reduce Babe's home run to a triple. He will tie for the A.L. title with 11 home runs, even though he plays just 95 games.

1935 - The A.L. continues its All-Star Game reign, winning the third event at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium, 4-1. Jimmie Foxx is the hitting star with a homer and three RBI.

1941 - At the All-Star Game at Briggs Stadium, Ted Williams, hitting .405 at the break, homers off Chicago Cubs pitcher Claude Passeau with two out and two on in the ninth inning to give the A.L. a dramatic 7-5 victory.

1947 - Clutch pinch hits by Luke Appling and Stan Spence lead the A.L. to a 2-1 win over the N.L. in the All-Star Game at Wrigley Field. Schoolboy Rowe pinch-hits for Johnny Sain, becoming the first player to appear for each side. Rowe pitched three innings for the A.L. in 1936.

1949 - Monte Irvin and Hank Thompson are the first blacks to play for the Giants. Thompson, who was also the first black to play for the St. Louis Browns (in 1947), starts at second base, and Irvin pinch-hits in the eighth. When Thompson steps in against Don Newcombe, it is the first time in Major League history that a black pitcher and a black hitter have faced off. The Dodgers win the game 4-3.

1951 - The feud between Joe DiMaggio and Casey Stengel reaches a head. In the second inning of a game, because of a misplay in the first, Stengel sends reserve Jackie Jensen out to center field to relieve the Yankee Clipper after he had already taken his position.

1952 - The N.L. defeats the A.L. 3-2 behind the pitching of the Phils' Curt Simmons and the Cubs' Bob Rush in Philadelphia. The game is ended after five innings because of rain. Hank Sauer's homer with Stan Musial aboard in the fourth proves to be the deciding run.

1957 - The owners decide to re-elect Commissioner Ford Frick to another seven-year term when his present contract is up in 1958.

1958 - The A.L. edges the N.L. 4-3 in the All-Star Game, played at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium. The Yankees Gil McDougald singles to score Boston's Frank Malzone with the deciding run.

1976 - Randy Jones beats the Cubs 6-3 for his 16th win of the year for the Padres, an N.L. record for wins at the All-Star break. He beats the Cubs 6-3. In the second half of the season, the Padres lefty will lose seven games by one run, including two 1-0 scores.

1980 - The N.L. wins its ninth consecutive All-Star Game 4-2 at Dodger Stadium. Reds outfielder Ken Griffey has two hits, including a home run, to win the game's MVP Award.

1982 - Billy Martin records his 1,000th career win as a manager as the A's beat the Yankees 6-3.

1997 - Sandy Alomar, Jr., who has a 30-game hitting streak to end the first half of the season, slams a two-run home run in front of the hometown crowd at Jacobs Field to lead the AL to a 3-1 win in the All-Star Game. Alomar is named the game's MVP for helping end the N.L.'s three-game winning streak.

Tips and Trends
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Francisco Giants at Milwaukee Brewers [2:10 PM ET]

Giants (-115, O/U 9): San Francisco has been the listed underdog in each of their past 4 games, yet that hasn't stopped the team from winning 3 of those games. San Francisco is currently swinging hot bats, as they've scored at least 6 runs in 3 of their past 4 games overall. The Giants are 43-40 SU this season, placing them 6 games behind San Diego. San Francisco would love to get a few games closer to the Padres as they head into the All-Star break. The Giants are -1.95 and -5.42 units both SU and on the RL respectively this season. P Barry Zito will look to get back on track tonight, as he's had a few poor starts of late. Zito is 7-4 with an ERA of 3.75 and a WHIP of 1.25. The Giants are 18-7 in their last 25 games against the National League Central. San Francisco is 2-9 in their last 11 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. The Giants are 5-1 in Zito's last 6 starts against the National League Central.

Giants are 10-4 last 14 games against a team with a losing record.
Over is 9-4 last 13 games against a team with a losing record.

Key Injuries - 3B Juan Uribe (finger) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side of the Day)

Brewers: It's been 11 games since Milwaukee last won consecutive games. Milwaukee has really fallen in the standings over the past few weeks, as they are now only 37-47 SU for the season. Shockingly, Milwaukee has a losing record at home, 17-24 SU. The Brewers are -10.87 and -9.90 units both SU and on the RL overall this season. Offensively, the Brewers have scored 1 run or less in 4 of their past 5 games overall. Lefty P Manny Parra 3-5 this season, with an ERA of 4.45 and a WHIP of 1.65. The Brewers are 0-4 in their last 4 games against a left-handed starter. Milwaukee is 0-4 in their last 4 during game 4 of a series. The Brewers are 2-6 in Parra's last 8 starts against the National League West.

Brewers are 1-4 last 5 home games.
Over is 11-2 last 13 starts against the National League West.

Key Injuries - CF Jody Gerut (heel) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4

St. Louis Cardinals at Colorado Rockies [3:10 PM ET]

Cardinals: St. Louis certainly isn't playing their best baseball currently, as they keep losing games despite being the listed favorite. St. Louis has lost 4 of their last 6 games, with 5 of those games coming as the listed favorite. As a result, the Cardinals are looking up at the Reds in the National League Central. St. Louis is 45-38 SU this year, 2 games behind Cincinnati. St. Louis is -8.34 and -14.19 units both SU and on the RL respectively this season. P Chris Carpenter will take the mound today, as he is 9-2 with an ERA of 3.16 and a WHIP of 1.21 this season. The Cardinals are 3-7 in their last 10 games against the National League West. The Cardinals are 1-4 in their last 5 road games against a right-handed starter. St. Louis is 5-0 in Carpenter's last 5 starts following an outing of less than 4 innings in his last appearance. The Cardinals are 21-8 in Carpenter's last 29 starts against the National League West. St. Louis is 19-7 in Carpenter's last 26 starts with 4 days of rest.

Cardinals are 0-9 last 9 during game 3 of a series.
Over is 5-1 last 6 road games against a team with a home winning percentage greater than .600%.

Key Injuries - RF Ryan Ludwick (leg) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 2

Rockies (-150, O/U 7.5): Colorado has won 4 of their past 5 games, as they seem poised to start their typical summer push to the top of the standings. Colorado will send Jhoulys Chacin to the mound today, so they are certainly confident another win is in order. The Rockies are 45-38 SU this season, 4 games behind the Padres in the National League West standings. Colorado is +0.64 and +1.45 units both SU and on the RL this season. Chacin is 5-7 overall this year, with an ERA of 3.93 and a WHIP of 1.32. The Rockies are 4-0 in their last 4 games against a right-handed starter. The Rockies are 35-17 in their last 52 home games against a right-handed starter. Colorado is 35-17 in their last 52 games against the National League Central. Colorado is 2-5 in Chacin's last 7 starts overall.

Rockies are 9-2 last 11 home games against a team with a winning record.
Over is 8-1 last 9 games against a team with a winning record.

Key Injuries - 1B Todd Helton (back) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3 (UNDER - Total of the Day)

Daily Sports Roundup: July 8

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Golfers hit the links at TPC Deere Run and Loch Lomond, while the Yankees meet the Mariners, and the Cardinals take on the Rockies.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Thursday has the Angels at the White Sox, Minnesota at Toronto, Cleveland at Tampa Bay, Baltimore at Texas, and the Yankees at Seattle. Andy Pettitte (10-2, 2.82 ERA) is slated to take on Jason Vargas (6-4, 3.22 ERA) in that Yankees/Mariners matchup. Lefthander Pettitte beat the Blue Jays in his last trip to the mound, holding them to three runs on five hits over his six innings of work. Lefthander Vargas was knocked around by the Tigers in his most recent outing, surrendering six runs on eight hits over just 4 1-3 innings of work for Seattle that game.

Over in the Nationals League on Thursday it's then Pittsburgh at Houston, San Francisco at Milwaukee, Cincinnati at Philadelphia, San Diego at Washington, Florida at Arizona, the Cubs at the Dodgers, and St. Louis at Colorado. Chris Carpenter (9-3, 3.16 ERA) will match up against Ubaldo Jimenez (14-1, 2.27 ERA) in that last contest. Righthander Carpenter will be looking to bounce back from a loss to the Brewers in which he allowed seven earned runs on nine hits in three innings of work. Righthander Jimenez also lost his last start, giving up seven runs on five hits over six innings of work against the Giants. The Rockies hadn't lost a Jimenez outing since way back on May 9.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The PGA Tour will begin the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois on Thursday, with Steve Stricker set as the 14/1 Vegas favorite to repeat as the tournament champion. Tim Clark (15/1), Zach Johnson (16/1), and K.J. Choi (18/1) follow Stricker on that odds list, with Jeff Overton rounding out the top five at 22/1. Overseas, Phil Mickelson is the 9/1 favorite to win the Barclays Scottish Open at Loch Lomond, followed by Ernie Els at 11/1, Martin Kaymer at 16/1, Graeme McDowell at 20/1, and Retief Goosen at 22/1. Robert Allenby and Charl Schwartzel are listed at 28/1.

Finally, there are two games on the WNBA's schedule for Thursday, with San Antonio at Minnesota and Tulsa at Indiana. The Shock (3-13 SU, 4-12 ATS) have lost 10 straight games, falling 69-54 at home to Washington in their last contest; Scholanda Robinson tossed in 16 points for Tulsa in that defeat. The Fever (10-6 SU, 9-7 ATS) are coming off a 58-51 win over Chicago, with Tamika Catchings scoring 16 points in that road game.

Thursday's six-pack

-- Adam Dunn hit three dingers Wednesday night against San Diego, as Washington edged the Friars 7-6.

-- NBA salary cap for next year will be $58M, or about $3M more than ARod/Jeter are getting paid this season.

-- Personalized All-Star jerseys are selling on MLB.com for $120; must admit, they're nice jerseys (red or blue), but would rather have a batting practice jersey from the player's team, not the All-Star Game.

-- With one day left to go in first round of World Series of Poker, 4,928 entrants have already started play. Looks like this year's field is going to be bigger than last year's, so first place will also be more money.

-- Buster Posey was 4-4, with two HRs, six RBI last nite in Milwaukee.

-- Art Modell thinks Lebron should stay in Cleveland.

*********************************************

Thursday's List of 13: Our look at SEC football in 2010.......

Alabama-- 26-2 last two years; the QB is 30-0 as starter in HS/college, but defense has only two starters back. Covered six of last seven as a favorite on road, but going to be hard to duplicate last year's +19 TO ratio.

Arkansas-- Mallett is best QB in SEC; Hogs have 10 starters returning on offense, with OL having 90 career starts. Scored 36 ppg LY after 21.9 in '08, thanks to +15 TO ratio. Last year was first bowl win since 2003.

Auburn-- Eight starters back on defense, seven on offense. Florida transfer Newton (won JC national title LY) could be new QB; Tigers are 4-1 in last five bowls, winning last three; all four wins were by exactly 3 points.

Florida-- Post-Tebow era begins; Gators are 13-5 vs spread as home fave last three years, are +57 in turnovers last five (only +7 LY). 4-1 in bowls last five years, with average total, 59.8. Only 5 starters back on defense.

Georgia-- 10 starters back on offense, but whos the QB? Play three SEC games in September, then odd road trip to Colorado. Only 2-8 vs spread as home favorite last two years. Minus-19 in turnovers last two years.

Kentucky-- They'll miss underrated coach Brooks (3-1 in bowls last four years); only one senior starter on OL/soph QB- they'll be growing pains for team that covered seven of last nine on road. Lost half of '09 starters.

LSU-- First six games are four SEC tilts, non-league games against North Carolina/West Virginia; Miles is just 11-19-1 vs spread as home favorite. Only four starters back on defense. LSU is only 17-9 last two seasons.

Ole Miss-- Snead threw 20 INTs LY, was early exit blessing in disguise? Rebels are 14-7-2 vs spread at home last four years, but with new QB and no seniors on OL, Nutt will be in his more desired role, as an underdog.

Mississippi State-- One winning season in last nine years; 0-7 vs spread as home favorite last five years. Have seven starters back on both sides of ball, scored 25.6 ppg LY in Mullen's first year, up from 15.3 ppg in '08.

South Carolina-- Nine starters back on offense, seven on defense; but -22 in turnovers last three years. Spurrier 1-3 in bowls with 'cocks, giving up 31.3 ppg, but 11-6-1 vs spread as underdog. More is expected this year.

Tennessee-- Third coach in three years, only nine returning starters, but this coach is an upgrade; back/back October road games at LSU/Georgia won't be pretty. Offensive line has only three starts-- they're very young.

Vanderbilt-- 7-1-1 vs spread as road dog last two years, but 5-13 as home favorite since '01; lost 11 starters from LY but they were 2-10, so does it matter? Jordan Rodgers is rare JC recruit; QB is Aaron Rodgers' brother.

Bettors' best friend: Thursday's wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

Cardinals at Rockies: Total opened at 7.5 but has dropped to 7.

Orioles at Rangers: Rangers opened at -290 but have been bet down as low as -245 at some books.

Marlins at Diamondbacks: Total opened at 9.5 but has climbed to 10 at most books.

Silver Stars at Lynx (WNBA): Lynx opened as 3-point favorites but slipped to 2.5. The total jumped from 152.5 at opening to 153.5.

Weather to watch

Orioles at Rangers: 70 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Angels at White Sox: 40 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Reds at Phillies: 30 percent chance of isolated thunderstorms.

Padres at Nationals: 30 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms.

Who's hot

Rays have won six of their last seven.

Yankees have won five of their last six.

White Sox have won four of their last five.

Who's not

Blue Jays have lost eight of their last nine.

Mariners have lost five of their last six.

Diamondbacks have lost four in a row.

Key stat

.5 - Difference between points scored per game last season by Chris Bosh (24.0) with the Toronto Raptors compared to former Heat big men Udonis Haslim and Jermaine O'Neal's combined (23.5). The duo did manage to pull down more rebounds than Bosh, 15.0 compared to his 10.8.

Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Colorado Rockies first baseman Todd Helton is expected to be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a back injury. Helton sat out Tuesday's and Wednesday's games against the St. Louis Cardinals, forcing recently acquired catcher Brad Eldred to move to first base. Eldred is batting .000 this season and is in the majors for the first time since 2007. He'll have a hard time replacing the veteran Helton, who is batting .246 with two home runs and 16 RBIs.

Game of the day

Reds at Phillies (-105, 9)

Notable quotable

"We all make our own decisions at the end of the day. Of course, we would love for LeBron to join Miami - who wouldn't? But at the same time, LeBron is going to make his own decision."

Dwyane Wade said of his decision to remain in Miami and play with Cris Bosh and his hopes that LeBron James will follow suit. James will announce his decision tonight on ESPN.

Tips and notes

For those hoping to get some insight from LeBron James' one-hour special on ESPN before placing a wager on which team he will choose, don't wait too long to push the button. A report in the Deseret News cites a source as saying James will announce his decision at the beginning of the 9 p.m. ET program, not at the end. The Cavs, Bulls, Knicks and Heat remain the hot choices among bettors, plus some books are offering -1000 that James will don a crown during the broadcast.

The baby drills finally have been called off for four-time Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, whose wife gave birth to a baby girl on Wednesday. Johnson had been on notice the past three weeks in case the baby came during a race weekend, with a replacement driver and helicopter standing by at all times. Now Johnson can relax and get back to the business of catching Kevin Harvick in the standings during the second half of the season, which begins at Chicago on Saturday.

Captain Colin Montgomerie says Europe will be favored over the United States in the Ryder Cup begins in October because of its players' successes on the PGA Tour this season. Among Brits, Graeme McDowell won last month's U.S. Open, Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy have tour victories this season and Justin Rose has won twice in the last three weeks. The Ryder Cup will be played at Celtic Manor, site of this weekend's Wales Open, so keep an eye on how those players fare on the course that Monty built with a home advantage in mind. Europe is currently -125 while the U.S. is +125.
