Rosenhaus put the information on his Twitter account after rumors surfaced that Rice had undergone surgery for a groin injury. Rice doesn't believe the hip will require surgery, and he hopes to be fully healthy for the start of the season. While this does explain Rice's absence from Larry Fitzgerald's summer camp, it's disconcerting that the injury has lingered for six months. Rice's health is now one of the most important fantasy stories to track in training camp.

Pelissero notes that Rice wasn't slowed at all by the injury in minicamp, though there's a big difference between 7-on-7 spring drills and the regular season grind. Doctors have prescribed rest for the hip, so it will be interesting to see how much Rice practices in camp. While we wouldn't let Rice fall out of round five or so of fantasy drafts, it's a situation to monitor closely.

It's been hard to get a handle on Rice's status over the past few weeks. Agent Drew Rosenhaus said he hoped Rice would be ready for the regular season while the receiver predicted that he's participate in training camp. What's worrisome to us is that the hip is still an issue six months after originally sustaining the injury. The Vikings open training camp Friday afternoon.

He'll be joined by CB Cedric Griffin (knee), as expected. Rice saw three specialists about the hip and considered surgery, but they decided against it. Coach Brad Childress announced that Rice will begin working in conditioning drills. Asked by a reporter where Rice's hip is at -- in terms of progress -- Childress replied "it's on the side of his body." Good one, Chilly.

Rice never had it. Banks concedes that the doctors who favored surgery didn't deem it "absolutely necessary," but passes along "some building skepticism" at Vikings camp after visiting Mankato over the past few days. Banks suggests that Rice's decision to bypass surgery may be contract-related, as his agent -- Drew Rosenhaus -- is hoping to secure Rice a long-term deal.

At least Charles is moving up; Kestahn Moore got first-team reps when Jones was bothered by a minor injury early last week. Still, it's looking increasingly likely that Jones will be the Chiefs' nominal starter to open the season, presumably splitting early-down work with Charles right down the middle. Charles should dominate passing-down snaps, but he's probably not going to flirt with 300 touches if he's not used as an every-down back.

The headaches were ostensibly brought on from stress due a recent death in Harvin's family. Harvin is back in Minnesota, resting near Vikings training camp, but Chilly still has no timetable for his return. We're not yet worried about Harvin's missed practice reps, and he has a month to get past the migraines.

The letter is sent automatically when a team receives a roster exemption for a player. Harvin has five days to report to the team or potentially risk suspension and/or fines. Though he has been dealing with migraines, there's also been speculation that he and Sidney Rice are purposely avoiding the rigors of camp as long as Brett Favre stays away. At the very least, Harvin can report to team headquarters and let the Vikes' medical staff contribute to the management of his migraines.

He had been away from the team, dealing with a death in the family and ensuing migraine headaches, since July 31. The Vikes are starting to get their important offensive pieces back one-by-one. Brett Favre should be next.

This qualifies as a considerable advancement for Rice, who had been limited to straight-ahead running over the past week. He wouldn't be cutting if the hip was still a major issue. There is still no timetable for his return to practice, but at least he's turned a corner here. Rice admitted to a "couple of setbacks" but said his hip has "gotten a lot better since the beginning of camp."

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Rice was able to perform cuts Monday for the first time and said it "felt pretty good." There is still no timetable for his return from the PUP list, but the receiver would like to play some during the preseason, saying "Preseason is not all bad like everybody thinks it is. You need that rhythm, you need to get the timing right with your quarterback..." Rice should be fine for Week 1.

Bernard Berrian tweeted Thursday that "Percy's doin' fine everyone." We can't imagine he'll be fielding practice punts anytime soon -- let alone play in Sunday night's exhibition game at San Francisco -- but it sounds like Harvin avoided a migraine that could ache for several days. "It seemed like he was stable," confirmed coach Brad Childress. The issue is a career-long concern for Harvin, but he's not moving in our rankings.

Coach Brad Childress is "optimistic" that Harvin may practice next week, but the Vikings will take all necessary precautions. "This is a puzzle we have no idea when it will be solved. It's a tough deal," Chilly said. It's alarming that Harvin's migraine episodes are occurring closer together, but the injury is tricky to gauge. We still fully expect him to be in uniform on Opening Day.

Rice felt pain in his hip Friday when he pushed it to the limit in conditioning drills. That has to be categorized as a setback, and Rice's fantasy value will continue to fall as a high-risk/high-reward WR2. The Vikings, unsure of Rice's early-season status, are working out free agents Brandon Jones and Javon Walker. Bernard Berrian now looks like a more attractive late-round flier.

The Vikings can't prevent migraines, but they don't believe Harvin passed out because of a migraine on Thursday. It's believed Harvin vomited and lost consciousness due to "an adverse reaction to medication, dehydration and low blood pressure." Harvin has already resumed weightlifting and running. Sugarman indicated Harvin is doing so well that he could've played Sunday night against San Francisco. He should definitely be ready for Week 1.

"We haven’t made any determination of whether he’ll be on IR or PUP," said Childress. Rice will be placed on reserve/PUP at the very least, costing him the first six games of the season. Childress acknowledged that Rice "won't do anything" football-related for another eight weeks. The team will reevaluate Rice at that stage, but he's no sure thing to contribute this season.

It's not clear if he'll be worked into full team drills, but there's no reason to hold him back at this point. He wouldn't be returning unless doctors gave him the green light. Last week's practice scare is said to be unrelated to Harvin's ongoing migraine issues.
