World Cup notes: Paul the octopus wraps his tentacles around Spain in Sunday's final.

The prognosticating sea creature, which correctly predicted the outcome of every game Germany played in this World Cup, including the semifinal loss to Spain, sticks with the Spaniards against the Dutch in the championship game.

By Grahame L. Jones and Kevin Baxter, Los Angeles Times

Reporting from Johannesburg, South Africa —

Paul the octopus has spoken — sort of — and he says Spain will win Sunday's World Cup final.

Paul the octopus selects Spain to win World Cup..

The mind-bending mollusk, who has yet to miss a World Cup prediction, ignored a tank marked with a Dutch flag Friday and instead descended on one with a Spanish flag, reaching in to grab a mussel and devour it as TV cameras from Germany, Great Britain, Taiwan and elsewhere looked on.

It was the first time the octopus, who lives in an aquarium in the western German city of Oberhausen, has been asked to pick a game in which Germany was not involved. But in his nearly 2½ years as an oracle, dating to the 2008 European Championship, he has called 11 of 12 matches correctly. In the World Cup he predicted Germany would beat Argentina, England, Australia and Ghana but also called losses to Serbia and Spain.

Paul's fame has earned him his own Facebook page in addition to calls to lend his special powers. A Greek reporter asked whether Paul could predict the end of his country's financial crisis, while in the Middle East commentators sought to have Paul choose the next Iraqi prime minister.
Nevertheless Paul's prestige is being questioned in the animal kingdom. In Singapore, Mani, a World Cup-forecasting parakeet, is picking the Netherlands to win Sunday.

Consolation game
It's not the way either team hoped to end its World Cup, but Saturday's game between Germany and Uruguay in Port Elizabeth will decide third place in the tournament.

For German striker Miroslav Klose, one goal would tie him with Brazilian striker Ronaldo for most World Cup goals ever with 15. And Uruguay's Diego Forlan, Klose and German teammate Thomas Mueller, with four goals each, remain in the running for the Golden Boot, which goes to the tournament's top scorer.

Spain's David Villa and Holland's Wesley Sneijder go into Sunday's final sharing the lead with five goals apiece.

Unfortunately Paul is retiring after this world cup

Just a piece of info for tonight: Every game for 3rd place since 1982 has seen 3 or more goals scored.
Forlan, Müller and Klose both will try to score as much as possible to win the title as best scorer, URU will try to help Forlan have a good game since he is also in the race for the tournaments best player and Germany might try to setup Klose, so that he can score and tie Ronaldo for the most world cup goals scored.

I like the over in this contest as well...wouldn't touch a side because motivation may not be very high for the 3rd place title. Shit who remembers who one 3rd place in the last cup.

Tabarez: We will end octopus streak.

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez said he is determined to prove Paul the octopus wrong by beating Germany in the third-place play-off on Saturday.

Paul has gained worldwide fame by successfully predicting all of Germany's six results at this World Cup by choosing between food containers which are identical apart from the opposing national team flags adorning them. If each guess was considered 50-50, the likelihood of getting six results correct is one in 64.

Now Paul has opted for Germany to beat Uruguay in the third-place play-off but Tabarez said it's time to end the psychic cephalopod's streak.

"It's not just a matter of beating Germany but also beating the octopus," Tabarez said. "(Beating Germany) would be absolutely spectacular, and I think it is possible. [It] would send a message to everyone by saying nothing is impossible in football.
"Since 1934, Germany has been participating all the time in the World Cup and Germany has written a great history in the book of the World Cups. Before the match against Spain this [German side] had been the best team of the tournament, so this is very motivating for us. We recognise this match will be difficult but we don't think it will be impossible."

Whether overcoming an impressive German outfit or proving Paul wrong is the bigger challenge, no one is sure, but Tabarez insisted that his team could hold their heads up high regardless of the outcome after a surprise run to the semi-finals.
"We have overall delivered great performances. I think overall it has been a great World Cup [for Uruguay]."

Tabarez confirmed his lethal strike pairing of Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez, who is back after a one-game suspension, will start the match. Forlan, with four goals, is one goal behind golden boot contenders David Villa and Wesley Sneijder, who will play in Sunday's final. But with third-place matches traditionally high-scoring affairs, compared to often cagey finals, Forlan still has a chance to claim the top-scorer's prize.

He's also in the running for the Golden Ball - awarded to the best player of the tournament - but Tabarez insisted he would put the team ahead of personal accolades.

"It's a matter of standing up for our country and he has done so," Tabarez said. "It would be great for Uruguayan football if he was taken into account as one of the top players ... but he is not going for that. It is a collective sport."

Shit who remembers who one 3rd place in the last cup.

I do (GER beat Portugal 3:1), since I was in attendance for the final game by Germany

Paul isretiring after this world cup, but he also was perfect for the EURO2008 until the final game: Back then he predicted GER to beat ESP, so Spain beat Germany to hand him his 1st and only loss....tomorrow he's going with a win by Spain, that will hopefully make him 0-2 in championship games @)
