Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays (+120, 9.5)

Toronto catcher John Buck got a glimpse of Jose Bautista’s potential six years ago. The two played with each other for a month on Kansas City’s roster before Bautista was dealt to the Mets.

"For some reason, they let him go," Buck said about the Royals trading Bautista in 2004. "I remember talking with Tony Pena – he was the Royals' manager at the time – and he was, like, 'We shouldn't have let that kid go. He's going to be really good.'

"I said, 'Yeah, what were we doing? That kid is going to be awesome,” Buck concluded.

Bautista blasted his major league-leading 24th home run Saturday but wasn’t invited to participate in the Home Run Derby at his first All-Star Game. While Bautista won’t be teeing off on batting practice pitching Tuesday one thing is for certain – this Blue Jays club is going to swing for the fences night in and night out.

Toronto leads MLB in long balls with 132 – 16 more than the Red Sox in second place. The Jays connected for three homers Saturday and have 10 in their last three games. The OVER is 6-0-1 in Toronto’s last seven games and the team has hit 20 jacks during that stretch.

With two pitchers with ERAs of 4.70 or higher on the bump Sunday, these two powerful offenses are licking their chops. Look for a barrage of runs in the series finale.

Pick: Over

Kansas City Royals at Chicago White Sox

It seems like just a few weeks ago we were talking about how the South Siders had completely turned the season around after it looked like hell had broken loose inside the clubhouse.

Oh wait, that was just a few weeks ago that Chicago strung together an 11-game win streak and was victorious in 15-of-16 contests. And now it’s déjà vu all over again.

The White Sox came into Saturday rolling along on a six-game streak while winning 23 of their past 28 ballgames. Chicago earned backers 19.93 units in that timeframe.

"I think if we would have said we were going to win that quick and be back in it as quick as we did, I don't think anybody would have believed us. We're starting to believe it,” Mark Buehrle said. "I think everybody knows the way we're playing, everybody is having fun right now.”

Chicago trails Detroit by just a half-game in the AL Central standings. Even with Zack Greinke on the mound Sunday, there isn’t any way the Royals can slow Chicago’s momentum heading into the break.

Pick: White Sox

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Wandy Rodriguez (6-10, 5.00 ERA), Houston Astros

This 31-year-old lefty is starting to pitch the way he did in his career season a year ago. Rodriguez, like the rest of his Houston teammates, did not get off to the best start and his numbers are still pretty ugly.

But over his last three starts, the southpaw hurler is 3-0 with a 0.90 ERA with 19 strikeouts to just four walks. This quality pitching seemed to come from nowhere. Rodriguez had allowed 14 runs in his last two starts before he turned it around.

C.J. Wilson (7-4, 3.24 ERA), Texas Rangers

You could make the case that this former closer was the Rangers’ staff ace before Texas acquired Cliff Lee. Wilson is having no trouble with the transition from the bullpen to the rotation. He’s riding a six-game stretch where he’s allowed two runs or less in each start.

The Rangers, not surprisingly, are 6-1 in Wilson’s last seven trips to the bump.

Slumping

Cole Hamels (6-7, 4.05 ERA), Philadelphia Phillies

This former World Series MVP really hasn’t been pitching that bad lately. It just seems like his team is destined to lose every time Hamels takes the mound. Philly is 1-5 in the lefty’s last six starts even though he sports a respectable 4.02 ERA over the stretch.

The Phillies average 4.8 runs per game this season but have given Hamels three or fewer runs in six of his last eight outings.

Jeff Francis (2-3, 5.12 ERA), Colorado Rockies

This Canadian left-hander has not been enjoying the 2010 campaign. It got off to a bad start when he had to sit out the first two months because of an injury and it hasn’t got much better since he returned to action.

Francis has allowed 13 runs in the last seven innings he’s tossed and the over is 4-1 in his last five starts.

Sunday Night Baseball: Cubs at Dodgers
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Cubs at Los Angeles Dodgers (-140, 8)

The final game before the 2010 MLB All-Star game takes place Sunday night at Chavez Ravine where the Dodgers host the Cubs. Let’s see how this game shapes up.

Furcal en fuego

After going 3-for-3 in the Thursday night series opener against the Cubs, shortstop Rafael Furcal was hitting .429 with a 1.201 slugging percentage since returning from his bereavement leave on June 23.

Furcal, who lost his father in a tragic equine accident, was named NL Player of the Week and is enjoying a career year. He was extremely close to his dad and is dedicating the rest of the season in his honor.

After the leadoff man’s 12-game streak of scoring a run - the longest since the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles - and 10-game hit streak ended Wednesday, he bounced right back with the big performance Thursday.

"He's made such a big difference in our ballclub," said Los Angeles manager Joe Torre.

Man power shortage

Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 30 with a strained right hamstring. He is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Class-A Inland Empire on July 10.

Barring a setback, Ramirez will likely be activated from the disabled list when he's eligible July 15, the day the Dodgers return from the All-Star break.

"To me, there's no reason to gamble. We already had lost him for six games. For the tradeoff of having him as a pinch-hitter, I thought this was safer. When the second half starts, we won't have time to nurse him," said Torre.

Clearing house

Several baseball sources have confirmed that the Cubs are ramping up their efforts in the trade market to start clearing the books of unwieldy salaries.

The problem is, who wants what the Cubs are selling?

• A sore-armed spot starter/middle reliever with more than $30 million left on his contract and a reputation as a hothead (Carlos Zambrano).

• A broken-down corner infielder due $14.6 million next season, hitting .204 with nine homers and 30 RBIs (Aramis Ramirez).

• A former All-Star first baseman who has only what's left on his $13 million contract for this season, but is hitting .230 with 10 home runs and 36 RBIs (Derrek Lee).

• A .276 hitting outfielder with 15 homers and 43 RBIs, but a major liability in any defensive position that is under contract through 2014 at $18 million per year - with a full no-trade clause (Alfonso Soriano).

"It has been very difficult for the family and the team the first half of the season," Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts told season ticket holders Thursday at Wrigley Field. "This is not where the family wanted to be in the first half of the season.”

Arms race

Chicago right-hander Carlos Silva worked 6.0 innings in his last start, snapping a four-game, team start loss skid in a 6-4 win at Arizona.

Silva left after experiencing some pain behind his knee. He has had various aches and pains for most of the season but has been able to pitch through them for the most part.

The Cubs are 11-5 in Silva’s 16 starts this season, including 5-2 on the road.

Silva, 2-5 in his last seven-team starts during July, is 2-0 with a 3.21 ERA in his career starts against the Dodgers.

After a rugged 1-5 effort in his first six-team starts for the Dodgers this season, veteran right-hander Vicente Padilla is 2-0 in his last two outings.

Padilla has been in commanding strikeout-walk ratio with 33 strikeouts and three walks in his last five starts. He has cashed in four of six-career team starts against the Cubs.

Parting thought

The Dodgers have ruled this series of late, going 12-6 the last 18 games entering the weekend, including 5-1 at home.

Chicago had won 14 of its previous17 road games in July prior to its series opening defeat to the Dodgers Thursday night.

This Day in Baseball
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On July 11 in Baseball History...

1914 - Babe Ruth breaks in with Boston, pitching a 4-3 win over Cleveland. In his first Major League at-bat, Ruth strikes out. He will be 2-1 with Boston, spending most of the year in the International League at Providence.

1939 - With another Yankees-dominated lineup, the American League defeats the National League 3-1 in the seventh All-Star Game, at Yankee Stadium. Cincinnati outfielder Ival Goodman fractures his shoulder diving for a ball.

1944 - Phil Cavarretta of the Cubs sets an All-Star Game record by reaching base five successive times on a triple, single, and three walks in a 7-1 National League romp.

1950 - Making a leaping, off-the-wall catch of a Ralph Kiner drive, Ted Williams fractures his left elbow in the All-Star game at Chicago. Remaining in the game, he puts the American League ahead, 3-2, with an RBI single. Kiner's ninth-innving home run ties the game, and Red Schoendienst's blast in the fourteenth inning wins it.

1960 - Home runs by Ernie Banks and Del Crandall pace the National League to a 5-4 win over the American League at Kansas City's Municipal Stadium in the first of two All-Star Games. Bob Friend notches his second All-Star win.

1961 - Strong winds dominate the first All-Star Game of 1961. A capacity crowd sees pitcher Stu Miller blown off the mound in the ninth inning at Candlestick Park. A balk is called, and it enables the American League to forge a 3-3 tie before losing 5-4 in ten innings.

1962 - For the first time since 1938, when the Waner brothers pulled the trick, brothers Hank and Tommie Aaron homer in the same inning. Both were hit in the last of the ninth, and Hank's grand slam provides the winning margin in a 8-6 Braves win over the Cards.

1968 - Earl Weaver, who never played in the Majors, replaces Hank Bauer as manager of the Orioles. Weaver will become famous for his boisterous temper and run-ins with umpires, but his 1,480 wins and .583 winning percentage in Baltimore will land him in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

1976 - In a pre-game promotion at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, thirty-four couples are married at home plate. The nuptials are then followed by Championship Wrestling in an evening billed as 'Headlocks and Wedlocks.' The Braves then pin a 9-8 loss on the Mets.

1978 - At San Diego, the National League wins the All-Star Game 7-3. Steve Garvey singles and triples to earn the game's MVP trophy. Vida Blue starts for the National League, becoming the first pitcher to start for both leagues. Blue also started in 1971 and 1975 for the American League.

1985 - Nolan Ryan becomes the first pitcher to record 4,000 strikeouts, fanning Danny Heep in the sixth inning of Houston's 4-3 win over the Mets. Ryan finishes with eleven strikeouts in seven innings, but gets no decision.

1987 - Billy Ripken, 22, joins his brother Cal in the Orioles starting lineup in Baltimore's 2-1 loss to the Twins. Orioles manager Cal Ripken, Sr., is the first to manage two sons in the Majors.

1989 - Bo Jackson and Wade Boggs lead off the bottom of the first inning with back-to-back home runs off Rick Reuschel to spark the American League to a 5-3 win in the All-Star Game at Anaheim Stadium. Jackson earns MVP honors.

Daily Sports Roundup: July 11

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Yankees take on the Mariners, F1 races at Silverstone, and the World Cup concludes in South Africa with Netherlands vs. Spain.

Chasing the World Cup . . .

The World Cup finally comes to an end on Sunday with the championship game between the Netherlands and Spain at Soccer City in Johannesburg (2:30pm ET). Spain slipped past Germany 1-0 in the tournament semifinals on Wednesday, and they're sitting as the favorites for the final at +110. The Netherlands, coming off a 3-2 victory over Uruguay, is the +240 underdog, with draw odds of +230, and the total at 2.5.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League wraps up its first-half schedule on Sunday with Minnesota at Detroit, Boston at Toronto, Cleveland at Tampa Bay, Kansas City at the White Sox, Baltimore at Texas, the Angels at Oakland, and the Yankees at Seattle. CC Sabathia (11-3, 3.19 ERA) is expected to get the ball for New York in Sunday afternoon's contest, while the Mariners send Ryan Rowland-Smith (1-8, 5.74 ERA) to the hill. Lefthander Sabathia picked up the win in each of his past seven starts, and he beat the M's on July 1 (one earned run over eight innings). Lefthander Rowland-Smith was Sabathia's opposition on July 1, picking up a no-decision while giving up two runs over six innings.

Meanwhile, the National League on Sunday has Cincinnati at Philadelphia, San Francisco at Washington, St. Louis at Houston, Pittsburgh at Milwaukee, San Diego at Colorado, Florida at Arizona, the Cubs at the Dodgers, and Atlanta at the Mets. Derek Lowe (9-7, 4.40 ERA) is the Braves' probable starter for Sunday, while New York goes with Johan Santana (6-5, 3.15 ERA). Righthander Lowe lost to the Phillies in his last trip to the mound despite giving up just two runs over his seven innings of work. Lefthander Santana blanked the Reds on three hits over nine innings in his last start; Santana took a no-decision against the Braves back on May 18, allowing two runs over seven innings.

Roaring around the track . . .

The drivers of Formula 1 will hit the track at Silverstone on Sunday for the British Grand Prix. Sebastian Vettel is coming off a win in the European Grand Prix last time out, and the oddsmakers have him pegged as the 9/4 favorite for Sunday's race. Lewis Hamilton is listed at 3/1 for Sunday, with Mark Webber at 9/2, Fernando Alonso at 13/2, and Jenson Button at 7/1. Vettel won the British Grand Prix last season, with Webber following him across the finish line just 15 seconds later. Button ended up in sixth place at that event, while Alonso was 14th, and Hamilton had to settle for a 16th-place finish.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The Canadian Football League wraps up its Week 2 slate on Sunday with Montreal at Edmonton. Montreal couldn't come up with a win in its first game of the season last week, falling 54-51 on the road to Saskatchewan. Edmonton is also 0-1 on the year after getting beaten 25-10 at home by British Columbia last week. Oddsmakers have the Alouettes listed as 6-point road favorites for Sunday's matchup, with the total at 54.

Sunday's six-pack

-- If you build it, they will come, as long as you win........
First-place Rangers had walk-up crowd of over 14,000 Saturday
Surging Rockies had a walk-up crowd of 10,362, also a big number.

-- Rajai Davis had four hits, five RBI, stole a base, first Oakland player to do that in same game since Tony Armas, thirty years ago.

-- Astros are 19-18 since June 1; their starting pitchers have 1.47 ERA in their last ten games.

-- White Sox are red-hot, going 24-5 in their last 29 games.

-- Cliff Lee got boxed around by the Orioles in his Texas debut, but he flew into Dallas and pitched on same day, which is highly unusual.

-- NBA luxury tax threshhold has been set at $70.307M for this year.

*************************************************

Sunday's Armadillo's Den: Our look at football in the Pac-10.....

Arizona-- Only Pac-10 team never to play in Rose Bowl; they've covered 10 of last 12 home games, are 9-1-1 as home dog since '05. Their top four RBs and the QB are all back, with four seniors on OL- is this the year?

Arizona State-- Lost 13 of 22 starters, have no senior starters on OL and new QB; are just 9-15 last two years, losing last six games in '09. 8-21-1 as road dog since '01; they start '10 with pair of I-AA foes. Rebuilding.

Cal-- 24-17 as home favorite under Tedford, who has rep as QB guru, but instead has put seven RBs in NFL. Bears 3-9 in last 12 as home fave, but won four of last five bowls, scoring 34.6 ppg. Finished over .500 in all of Tedford's eight years; they were 3-8/1-10 two years before he got there.

Oregon-- Five starters back on OL (85 career starts) to protect a new QB; scored 36-42-32 ppg last three years, covering 18 of last 26 as home fave. 31-13 SU in Pac-10 last five years, covered 27 of their last 41 home tilts.

Oregon State-- Beavers are 10-4 as road dog since '06, but non-conference slate of TCU/Louisville/Boise State is too hard. 19-8 vs spread in last 27 Pac-10 games; have four starters back on OL, protecting their new QB.

USC-- Total X-factor, with probation and players defecting at rapid clip. New coach, QB who threw 15 TD, 14 picks LY; Trojans scored 26.5 ppg LY, 11 ppg less than '08. USC is 3-9 vs spread in last 12 as a road fave.

Stanford-- Scored 35.5 ppg LY, 9.0 ppg more than any of the previous six seasons; 7-3 as home favorite under Harbaugh, 10-2 vs spread in last 12 at home, but just 5-8 as road dog. Who replaces departed star RB Gerhart?

UCLA-- 17-7 as home favorite, but 14-5 non-conference mark will get big test from slate of K-State/Houston/Texas. 22-9 vs spread in game after a loss. Experienced OL with 92 starts, but they've had trouble keeping QBs healthy. Soph QB averaged 308 yards/game LY when he was healthy.

Washington-- I think QB Locker wins Heisman; he's Tim Tebow without bigtime teammates. Four starters back on OL (88 starts), all the receivers are back; they were +4 in turnovers LY (minus-52 the previous six years)

Washington State-- Last two years, allowed 96 sacks, minus-32 in TOs, so not sure having four starters back on OL is good. 9-16 vs spread in last 25 games as road dog. Shut out in four of last 18 games; last bowl was '03, last time they were favored to win a game was '07. 10 of their 11 losses in '09 were by 18+ points. Being competitive weekly would be a huge step.

Sunday Tips

The final day before the All-Star Break still has plenty of drama on the table with all six second-place teams sitting less than four games behind the leader of their respective division. Three of the top four teams in the NL West play late games on Sunday, as we'll start at Coors Field with the streaking Rockies battling the first-place Padres.

Padres at Rockies - 3:10 PM EST

The cardiac kids from Colorado look to wrap up the first half on a winning note, winning eight of nine games on this current homestand. The Rockies decided that leading a game from start to finish wasn't very fun, so Colorado has rallied for a victory in three of the last four wins. The Padres try to spoil the fun, while looking to avoid a sweep after dropping the first two games of this series.

Jeff Francis (2-3, 5.12 ERA) looks to bounce back following two shaky starts against the Cardinals and Padres, allowing 13 earned runs and 13 hits in just seven innings. Francis only received a loss at San Diego in a 13-3 setback, as the Rockies rallied from a seven-run deficit to shock St. Louis, 12-9. Colorado has managed to win each of Francis' last three home starts, with each game finishing 'over' the total.

The Padres counter with southpaw Clayton Richard (6-4, 3.00 ERA), who was on the winning end of that 13-3 blowout of the Rockies on June 30. Richard turned in his best start of the season in that victory, striking out 10 and scattering five hits in seven innings of work. The left-hander has actually pitched well on the road, compiling an ERA of 2.98 away from Petco Park, but his lack of run support has resulted in San Diego going 3-4 in his seven away starts.

The Rockies have claimed eight of the 11 meetings this season, including three of four at Coors Field. The 'over' has cashed in five of the last six matchups, with double-digit runs scored between the clubs in four of those contests.

Angels at Athletics - 4:10 PM EST

A pair of eight-game winners takes the mound in Oakland as the Halos try to close the 4 ½-game gap in the AL West behind division-leading Texas. The A's have hit the skids quickly after a respectable start, but Bob Geren's squad swung the bats well in a 15-1 thrashing of the Angels last night.

The Angels put a stop to a four-game slide in Friday's extra-inning win over the A's, as ace Jered Weaver (8-4, 2.82 ERA) tries to rebound from a subpar effort at Chicago. Weaver allowed four earned runs and two homers in a 4-1 setback to the White Sox, the first non-quality start for the righty since a 10-1 loss at Oakland on June 8. In that defeat to the A's, Weaver gave up a season-high six earned runs and 12 hits in six innings, while being listed as a $1.40 road favorite. The Angels are 9-3 since last June when Weaver lost as 'chalk' in his last start.

The surprising Trevor Cahill (8-3, 3.17 ERA) suffered his first loss since May 16 when the Yankees beat the righty on Tuesday, 6-1. Cahill allowed six earned runs on only four hits in six innings, halting a five-game winning streak for Oakland in his previous five outings. The defeat Cahill endured two months ago came in a 4-0 loss in Anaheim as a $1.45 underdog, despite putting together a quality start. Cahill has turned into a great 'under' play, cashing in 10 of 13 outings.

The Angels have won six of the last nine meetings after the A's claimed two of the first three in April. Los Angeles is 6-3 the previous nine games at the Oakland Coliseum, with six of those contests finishing 'under' the total.

Yankees at Mariners- 4:10 PM EST

Two teams that have been going in completely different directions all season meet at Safeco Field as the Bombers look to keep up their winning ways heading to the break. New York has been on fire on its current West Coast swing by grabbing the five of six games, but the Yanks couldn't claim the biggest prize by losing out on the Cliff Lee sweepstakes, with the former Cy Young Award winner getting dealt to Texas.

Lee's former teammate CC Sabathia (11-3, 3.19 ERA) has the accolades to win the top pitcher's award this season, grabbing seven straight victories. Sabathia has allowed three earned runs combined in his last four outings, including a 10-strikeout effort in his native Northern California as the Yanks stomped the A's, 6-1. The southpaw is 6-1 his previous seven starts in Seattle, as New York picked up two blowout wins at Safeco last season with Sabathia starting.

Ryan Rowland-Smith (1-8, 5.74 ERA) has turned in a pair of solid starts his last two times out, but the Mariners failed to give the left-hander substantial run support in losses to the Royals and Yankees. Rowland-Smith was a $3.20 road underdog against Sabathia and the Yankees on July 1, scattering five hits and two earned runs in six innings as Seattle fell, 4-2. The Aussie hasn't beaten the Yankees in three career starts, despite all three outings being quality ones.

The road team is 4-2 this season, while the Yanks are 6-4 the last 10 meetings at Safeco Field following Seattle's 4-1 victory on Saturday. Even though it's dangerous to lay at least $2.00 on the road, New York is 17-4 in Sabathia's last 21 starts in this price range.

Cubs at Dodgers - 8:05 PM EST

The final game on the card comes from Chavez Ravine as Los Angeles and Chicago close out the first half. The Cubs knocked off the Dodgers on Saturday afternoon, 7-3, but remain 9 ½ games back of Cincinnati in the NL Central. The Dodgers have claimed eight of 12 to stay within arms-length of the Padres in the NL West race.

Carlos Silva (9-2, 2.96 ERA) has turned into the ace of the Chicago staff, as the righty ended a four-start winless streak by winning at Arizona his last time out. Silva's road numbers are superb, putting together a 5-0 mark and ERA of 3.05 on the highway. Silva hasn't faced the Dodgers since 2006, while not pitching in Los Angeles since 2005 as a member of the Twins.

Veteran Vicente Padilla (3-2, 4.72 ERA) has pitched well off the disabled list, winning his last two starts against the Giants and Marlins. Padilla struck out 14 and walked only one in those victories, as each finished 'over' the total. The 'over' is now 6-2 in Padilla's eight starts this season, as the righty sees the Cubs for the first time in three seasons.

The Dodgers are 6-2 the last eight home meetings with the Cubs, with the 'under' going 5-2-1 in that span. Chicago is 5-2 to the 'over' the previous seven games on the road, while scoring at least six runs six times in this current stretch.
