LENEXA, Kansas - A Johnson County man has been missing since Thursday afternoon.

Friday from 3:30 until almost dark, friends and family searched part of Shawnee Mission Park. The search resumed Saturday morning, as the group mapped out their next search areas.

They searched wooded areas, and swarmed across fields on the west side of the park.

They searched for clues about what happened to Larry Schnackenberg, a father of five who was last seen around 12:30pm Thursday.

He was supposed to have picked up a son for a dentist's appointment, but didn't show up.

"Larry's just a terrific family man and this just doesn't make sense, it's not right. And if it were me, he'd be the first one in line to come and look," said Ellen Norburg.
She's known Larry for 20 years.

She's gotten bloody scratches from scrambling through the thick brush.
"I was out here earlier and I thought, how would anyone ever go through this," Norburg added.

Many of the 500 searchers are students and parents from Shawnee Mission West high school, where Schnackenberg's children attended.

Friends say his youngest child is still a student there.

Lindsey ****** is among those who also helped search three summers ago when Kelsey Smith, a West student, disappeared.

She had been kidnapped and killed.

"It's just kind of heartbreaking, twice around the same time of year," said ******.
Now Kelsey's parents are helping organize this search.

Larry's car was found by shelter house number eight, near a hiking trail.
Schnackenberg's family says his car was found around 6:30 p.m. Thursday with his ID, wallet, and cell phone in the car.

Police searched the area for several hours near his car.

Then the volunteer effort took over.

"Maybe we can find something that will help the police, maybe we even find Larry. That's the bottom line. Maybe he's out here wandering around, maybe he's hurt," said Greg Smith, Kelsey's father.

Kelsey's army has become Larry's army.
Friends worry.

They say the disappearance is out of character for a stable family man who was looking forward to celebrating his daughter's wedding next weekend.
Smith says they found some cell phones, clothing and sunglasses, but have no idea whether those are helpful clues.

The items have been turned over to police.
The search starts up again Saturday morning at 9:30 at shelter house eight in Shawnee Mission Park.

Bring plenty of sunscreen, water and bug spray.
Volunteers are also being asked to bring extra ice and fruit like oranges and grapes.

Friends and family have also established a Facebook group to help spread the word about Schnackenberg's disappearance.
Schnackenberg is described as a 58-year-old white male, about 6 foot 1 and 225 pounds. He was last seen wearing a white polo shirt and tan shorts.

If you have seen him or know anything about his whereabouts, call the Lenexa Police Department at (913) 477-7301 or the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-TIPS.

Wow, that's really odd. I don't know the guy at all but sounds like a good family guy with a normal routine. Knowing that he was supposed to pick up his kid at the dentist office and since they found his car with nothing stolen I'm not sure what to think.

Two things come to mind and that's either abduction up the trail and into the woods or the guy went for a hike and fell or something.

Very strange. I don't pray but will be thinking about this.

Unfortunately, appears to be foul play. I can't imagine him leaving his phone, wallet in the car and go hiking or anything without either.

nothing yet has been found, i heard from a friend who was part of the search party that a tip came in that two hispanic males were seen in the area around the water not in any type of hiking/outdoor clothing around the time he went missing. also heard the contents of his wallet were scattered in the car, not sure if anything was missing

I don't believe in prayer since it's a byproduct of the ultimate cult called "religion." Religion is truly the best way to keep the "masses" in check.

Nevertheless, I hope your friend will get a favorable conclusion to the mystery disappearance of his father.

Unfortunately, with the facts and circumstances you have provided in this bizarre case ... I also would suspect "foul play" is involved.:smoking:

Support your friend emotionally as he goes through this ordeal. He will certainly need you.

I really hope he is found safe and sound. I lived through a distressing story myself like this once before.

always hope for the best... there's got to be a way for anyone to be located in this day and age, sure it's an invasion of privacy but anyone out alone needs to have something on them for safety... a chip in a wristwatch, whatever.

Unfortunately, agreed. He seems like a straight shooter who wouldn't have gotten involved with the wrong kinds of people, so why would he suddenly and unexpectedly take off? Especially a week before his daughter is getting married.

The only rational explanation that would make sense for suddenly pulling over and not taking anything with him from the car would be if he had to go take a leak in the woods, then fell somewhere. But how far would he have run into the woods? Wouldn't he have fallen close enough to his car to be found? And that still wouldn't explain why his wallet items were supposedly scattered throughout the car. Was he carrying any cash? Was that still among the wallet stuff scattered about? What about his credit cards? Just a few of the hundreds of questions his family and the police have, I'm sure.

Sadly, all signs point to him getting abducted in a robbery gone wrong. That's the only theory that makes sense at this point. If he was wandering about on foot, it seems unlikely he could have gotten farther than the helicopter search parties that have already taken place.

It's getting bad to the point that if you live around minorities you're better off moving far, far away.

You're out of line. Guy says a rumor is that two hispanics were seen by some water.

1) It's a rumor.
2) Who gives a shit? They may have been fishing.
3) Maybe they weren't even hispanic.

So many things wrong with this post I don't know where to start.
