Driver killed in crash at Washington raceway

A drag racing driver died Sunday after crashing at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Wash., the Seattle Post Intelligencer said.

Mark Niver, 60, was competing at the National Hot Rod Association's (NHRA) Northwest Nationals when the parachutes ripped off his dragster after he crossed the finish line.

The dragster then hit the track netting, with its chassis buckling back into the driver cockpit, ESPN said.

Racing was shut down after the deadly crash, said King County Sheriff's spokesman Sergeant John Urquhart.
The NHRA said it was investigating the tragedy.

Niver, a longtime NHRA veteran, raced dragsters of all varieties dating back to the 1970s.

The top achievement in his career came in 2008 when he won the 2008 O'Reilly Summer Nationals in Topeka.

better a driver than a spectator !

driver knows he is doing dangerous stuff, I hate to see a spectator die at a car event, or any sporting event.
