Desktop went out. I restart it and it says "restart and select proper boot device". Can't get into safe mode. BIOS settings are correct as far as boot order. It recognizes the hard drive in BIOS but it's not realizing the OS. I put in the Windows disk to either reinstall or correct any problems with the OS but it gives me the blue screen of death whenever I hit the button to do either (cds boot up fine and work fine up until that point).

Any other suggestions or is the hard drive just crap? I put in a different hard drive to check if it was some sort of cable error and the computer started up perfectly.

sounds like a bad hard drive.

you can probably still get the data off if you boot to a bootable disc.

will need an external hard drive though.

Yeah that's about the conclusion I came too. Was just hoping somebody could suggest something clever.

Is it the only drive in the machine? You could try switching the jumper from master to cable select or vise versa and see if that helps. Did you run scan disk or can you not even get that far?

You could put the drive in another machine, then run scan disk and see if that helps.

If not, do what the guy above said and buy a new computer.
