very shitty week for the yankees losing two huge members of the family. Every owner should strive to be like george and will only serve as extra motivation for the yankees in the 2h of the season. rip

Report: Steinbrenner suffers massive heart attack

New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner suffered a massive heart attack, Florida's Bay News 9 reported Tuesday.

Steinbrenner, who celebrated his 80th birthday on July 4, was listed as in extremely critical condition in a Tampa, Fla hospital.

Yankees spokesman Ian Johns told FOX News he had "no information" on the reported attack, though he conceded Steinbrenner was not in "great health" generally.

The famously cantankerous Steinbrenner, known as "The Boss," has been atop the Yankees masthead for seven World Series titles.

Though he frequently quarreled with the teams managers, in recent years he has been a rare presence at the ballpark, with most statements issued through a spokesperson.

Longtime New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner died Tuesday morning, his family confirmed in a statement.

"It is with profound sadness that the family of George M. Steinbrenner III announces his passing. He passed away this morning in Tampa, Fla., at age 80," the family said in a statement.

"He was an incredible and charitable man. First and foremost he was devoted to his entire family -- his beloved wife, Joan; his sisters, Susan Norpell and Judy Kamm, his children, Hank, Jennifer Jessica and Hal; and all of his grandchildren.

"He was a visionary and a giant in the world of sports. He took a great but struggling franchise and turned it into a champion again."

The Steinbrenner family said that funeral arrangements will be private, however details about an additional public service will be announced at a later date.
The New York Daily News reported that Steinbrenner died around 6:30 a.m. ET Tuesday in Tampa, Fla.

WABC-TV in New York reported that Steinbrenner, the Yankees' owner since 1973, suffered a massive heart attack.

Love him or hate him....he was good for the game....

I have to give Steinbrenner this, he did what was needed for his team to win. I have a lot more respect for someone like that than I do for an owner just wanting to collect revenue sharing.

George meeting the GRIM REAPER today is analagous to Darth Vader meeting his maker.:grandmais

George will be missed for his micro managing and uncanny ability to stir turmoil within the organization. Despite this, he spent hundreds of millions of dollars and produced many World Series Champions. He drove up players' salaries by overpaying so many mediocre ones. Scary character if you were employed by him.

RIP Darth. MLB won't be the same without you.

George had a profound effect on the game. I wonder if Billy Martin will be there to meet and greet George?
