Tips and Trends
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colorado Rockies at Cincinnati Reds [7:10 PM ET]

Rockies: Colorado has been brilliant of late, as they attempt to catch the San Diego Padres in the National League West division. The Rockies have gone 8-2 SU in their past 10 games to stand 49-39 SU on the year. Colorado still needs to play better on the road if they are to play in the postseason this year. The Rockies are only 18-23 SU this season away from home. Colorado is +3.47 and +5.73 units both SU and on the RL respectively this year. Lefty Jorge De La Rosa will make the road start tonight, and he's 3-1 with an ERA of 4.94 and a WHIP of 1.46 this season. The Rockies are 6-0 in their last 6 games against a right-handed starter. Colorado is 9-3 in their last 12 games against a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15. The Rockies are 20-7 in their last 27 games during game 2 of a series. The Rockies are 6-0 in De La Rosa's last 6 starts against the National League Central. Colorado is 5-1 in De La Rosa's last 6 starts against a team with a winning record. The Rockies are 22-5 in De La Rosa's last 27 starts overall. The Rockies are 8-2 in De La Rosa's last 10 road starts.

Rockies are 6-1 last 7 games against a team with a winning record.
Over is 11-3 last 14 games against a team with a winning record.

Key Injuries - SS Troy Tulowitzki (wrist) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Reds (-125, O/U 9): Cincinnati is leading the National League Central with a record of 49-41 SU. The Reds have lost their last 4 games however, and they have the worst record of any current division leader. Cincinnati has been held to 3 runs or fewer in 5 of their last 6 games overall. Perhaps the young inexperienced team is trying a bit too hard. The Reds are +7.67 and +9.09 units both SU and on the RL this year. P Edinson Volquez will make his season debut tonight, as he appears to be a vital part of this pitching staff down the stretch of this season. The Reds are 15-5 in their last 20 home games against a left-handed starter. Cincinnati is 7-3 in their last 10 Saturday games. The Reds are 1-5 in their last 6 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. The Reds are 14-6 in Volquez's last 20 starts against a team with a winning record. Cincinnati is 1-6 in Volquez's last 7 home starts against a team with a winning record.

Reds are 11-25 last 36 games against the National League West.
Under is 5-1 last 6 games against a team with a winning record.

Key Injuries - C Ramon Hernandez (knee) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (OVER - Total of the Day)

New York Mets at San Francisco Giants [9:05 PM ET]

Mets: New York is trying to keep pace with the Atlanta Braves in the National League East division, where they are currently 5 games behind. New York is struggling offensively again, as they've been held to 3 runs or fewer in each of their last 6 games. The Mets are +6.56 and +21.76 units both SU and on the RL respectively this year. The Mets have easily been one of the most profitable teams to back from a betting standpoint this season. P Michael Pelfrey will take the mound today, looking to keep up his outstanding season. Pelfrey is 10-4 with an ERA of 3.58 and a WHIP of 1.44 this season. The Mets are 5-12 in their last 17 games as a road underdog of +110 to +150. New York is 1-4 in their last 5 games against a right-handed starter. The Mets are 4-0 in Pelfrey's last 4 starts against the National League West. New York is 6-1 in Pelfrey's last 7 starts as a road underdog of +110 to +150. The Mets are 5-1 in Pelfrey's last 6 starts during game 3 of a series. New York is 12-5 in Pelfrey's last 17 starts on grass.

Mets are 7-2 last 9 games as an underdog of +110 to +150.
Under is 9-0 last 9 road games against a team with a home winning percentage greater than .600%.

Key Injuries - SS Jose Reyes (oblique) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (Side of the Day)

Giants (-145, O/U 7): San Francisco is 7 games over .500 at 48-41 SU, yet are in 4th place within their own division. Despite being in 4th place in the National League West, the Giants are only 3.5 games back thanks to 8 wins in their past 10 games overall. San Francisco is +2.18 and -0.82 units both SU and on the RL this year. P Matt Cain has been really streaky this season, and he's currently struggling a bit. Cain is 6-8 this season, with an ERA of 3.34 and a WHIP of 1.21. The Giants are 6-0 in their last 6 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. San Francisco is 4-1 in their last 5 games against the National League East. The Giants are 4-1 in their last 5 games against a right-handed starter. San Francisco is 10-4 in their last 14 during game 3 of a series. The Giants are 10-2 in Cain's last 12 starts as a home favorite of -110 to -150. The Giants are 15-6 in Cain's last 21 starts as a home favorite. San Francisco is 2-5 in Cain's last 7 home starts against a team with a winning record.

Giants are 2-8 last 10 against a team with a winning record.
Over is 8-3 last 11 against the National League East.

Philadelphia Phillies at Chicago Cubs (-105)

Despite winning the first two games after the All-Star break, it appears the Cubs will remain in the seller’s market before the trade deadline.

Starting pitcher Ted Lilly met with general manager Jim Hendry on Thursday to discuss his future with the team. Lilly said that he could not divulge what was talked about in the meeting but his start Friday against the Phillies was more than likely an audition for suitors. Lilly went seven strong innings where he surrendered three earned runs and recorded 10 strikeouts.

"He wants to stay here and we'd like for him to stay here,” manager Lou Piniella said. “At the same time, you never know what's going to happen, and for a veteran pitcher like Teddy or a veteran player, just go do your job and whatever happens, happens.”

Every member of the Cubs club is looking over his shoulder right now, wondering if he will be the next trade candidate in the headlines. And when players are spooked by their own shadow, it’s difficult to find success on the field.

"I like it quiet anyway so if stuff leaks out, it doesn't come from me," Piniella said of discussing trades with Hendry. "There are always leaks, but if I don't know anything about it, it can't come from me."

While Sweet Lou pleads the fifth, there is no way Chicago is going to steal a full series from the Phillies. Cole Hamels is coming off a stellar performance against Cincinnati and a price this low (-115) is just too good to pass up.

Pick: Phillies

Toronto Blue Jays at Baltimore Orioles (+115, 9)

How about a fresh start on your betting account? A clean slate can do worlds for some people and Yunel Escobar is hoping for that type of result.

Escobar was dealt from the Braves to Toronto during the All-Star break in a five-player deal. The 27-year-old shortstop had fallen out of favor with manager Bobby Cox in Atlanta because the skipper believed Escobar gave a lackadaisical effort in the field.

"There was a problem (in Atlanta)," Escobar said. "I feel bad that I was getting a label I don't think I deserved. I was giving it my all when I was in Atlanta, so I can't say I would have played any different.

“I welcome the opportunity to play for a new team and get a fresh start for the second half. I'm really happy to get the opportunity to prove myself once again.”

Escobar joins a powerful, home run hitting lineup in Toronto. Through 75 games this season, Escobar was hitting just .238 with no homers and 19 RBIs. He hit .299 and .288 in his first two full seasons in the big leagues with a total of 24 jacks and 136 RBIs.

Look for Escobar to rebound in the second half and the Jays to rally around their newest member Saturday while cooling off the Orange Birds.

Pick: Blue Jays

Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Mark Buehrle (8-7, 4.24 ERA), Chicago White Sox

The long-time White Sox ace is rounding into form. The southpaw hurler has guided the Chi-Sox to a 6-1 record in his last seven trips to the bump. Buehrle’s delivered quality starts in each of his last six outings and the under is 4-2 over the same stretch.

Better yet, he hasn’t been priced higher than -156 in any of his last 10 starts even though the Sox are 8-2 in those games.

Trevor Cahill (9-3, 2.94 ERA), Oakland Athletics

This young righty has been money in the bank for A’s backers all season. Oakland is 9-2 in Cahill’s last 11 starts while the under is 10-3-2 in his 15 starts this season. One more mouthwatering note: The A’s are 5-0 in his last five road outings.

Slumping

Matt Cain (6-8, 3.34 ERA), San Francisco Giants

This hard-throwing righty’s stock is dropping. Sure, he can bring the heat, but San Fran never gives him any run support. The Giants are 0-5 in his last five trips to the mound and he carries a hefty 8.73 ERA over the five-game stretch.

Returning/slumping

Rick Porcello (4-7, 6.14 ERA), Detroit Tigers

Porcello ran into a major sophomore slump following his memorable 2009 campaign. His performance was so dreadful that the Tigers sent him down to the minors in June. He’s scheduled to pitch on Saturday because the team’s in a tough spot with the doubleheader.

"It's one start," manager Jim Leyland told the Detroit Free Press. "It doesn't mean he's back in the rotation. It's just one start. We'll play it by ear from that point on. As it stands right now, he's coming up to pitch a game against the Indians, and that's all it means.”

Porcello has made four starts in the minors, with two gems and two duds.

Daily Sports Roundup: July 17

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The CFL finishes off its third week, while the Red Sox play host to the Rangers, and the Marlins send their ace out to face the Nationals.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Saturday has Detroit at Cleveland (in a twin bill), Tampa Bay at the Yankees, Toronto at Baltimore, the White Sox at Minnesota, Oakland at Kansas City, Seattle at the Angels, and Texas at Boston. The Rangers are expected to send Cliff Lee (8-4, 2.64 ERA) to the mound in that last contest, while the Red Sox counter with John Lackey (9-5, 4.78 ERA). Lefthander Lee lost his first start as a member of the Rangers last time out, giving up six runs on nine hits over nine innings against the Orioles. Righthander Lackey was knocked around by the Blue Jays in his most recent outing, surrendering seven runs on eight hits over his 4 2-3 innings pitched.

The National League on Saturday then offers up Philadelphia at the Cubs, the Dodgers at St. Louis, Houston at Pittsburgh, Colorado at Cincinnati, Milwaukee at Atlanta, Arizona at San Diego, the Mets at San Francisco, and Washington at Florida. Livan Hernandez (6-5, 3.37 ERA) will take on Josh Johnson (9-3, 1.70 ERA) in that Nationals/Marlins matchup. Righthander Hernandez was tagged with a loss by the Giants in his last start, allowing five runs on five hits over his five innings of work. Righthander Johnson lowered his ERA even further in his most recent outing, blanking the Dodgers on six hits over eight innings of work to grab his ninth victory of the season.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The Canadian Football League wraps up the third week of its season on Saturday with Edmonton at Saskatchewan. The Eskimos (0-2 SU, 0-2 ATS) fell 33-23 at home to Montreal last week despite Ricky Ray's 340-yard passing game. The Roughriders (2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS) kept their unbeaten record intact with a 37-18 road win over British Columbia last week; Darian Durant passed for 252 yards for Saskatchewan in that contest. The oddsmakers have listed the Roughriders as the 7-point home favorites for Saturday's matchup, while the OVER/UNDER for the contest was pegged at 56 points.

Finally, there are three games on the WNBA's schedule for Saturday, with Atlanta at Connecticut, Tulsa at Phoenix, and Seattle at Minnesota. The Storm (17-2 SU, 13-5-1 ATS) are well ahead of the pack in the Western Conference standings, and they're coming off a 111-107 win over Phoenix last time out. Lauren Jackson picked up 31 points and 18 rebounds in that victory for Seattle, which has won eight straight games. The Lynx (7-11 SU, 9-9 ATS) are riding a modest two-game winning streak, beating Atlanta 83-81 last time out; Seimone Augustus had 22 points for the Lynx on that night.

Saturday's six-pack

Odds to win division titles in the AFC this season.......

AFC East-- Patriots 5-4, Jets 6-5, Dolphins 3-1, Bills 18-1
AFC North-- Ravens 5-7, Steelers 11-5, Bengals 3-1, Browns 8-1
AFC South-- Colts 2-3, Texans 7-2, Titans 4-1, Jaguars 8-1
AFC West-- Chargers 2-5, Broncos 9-2, Chiefs/Raiders 5-1
AFC Title-- Colts/Jets 3-1, Chargers/Ravens 4-1, Patriots 6-1
Super Bowl Title-- Colts 9-2, Jets 6-1, Chargers/Dallas/Ravens 7-1.

************************************************

Saturday's List of 13: Random thoughts from the desert.......

13) Someone remind me never to go to Scotland on vacation. Ever.

12) Bengie Molina hit for the cycle Friday, but pulled up lame on a triple and now could be on the shelf for a few days. What are the odds?

11) Nice of the Mets to come out of the gates flying in the second half-- two games, no runs. They made Barry Zito look like Steve Carlton.

10) People don't talk about Josh Johnson that much, but he has an ERA of 1.70 and a 0.96 WHIP. Those are bigtime numbers.

9) It was 110 in Las Vegas today, but I didn't know it when I was walking on the Strip; I was less comfortable last week at home, when it was 95 on a day with 80% humidity. Go figure.

8) Was back at UNLV today for more NBA Summer League; think that Detroit hit the jackpot with Georgetown's Greg Monroe. He has a lot of game, very well-rounded.

7) DeMarcus Cousins had a Summer League triple-double; 15 points, 12 rebounds and 10 fouls (you foul out here on the 10th foul). He shot 5-18 from the floor and had a much tougher time than he did the last game.

6) I think New York fans will like Landry Fields; he's undersized, but if he touches the ball, good things happen.

5) Watch out for Washington's 7-1 JaVale McGee, who went for 31 in the Wizards' 90-89 win over New Orleans. McGee made 13-16 from floor; he is the son of Pam McGee, who was a terrific player at USC. John Wall had 31 points in that game, which Washington won despite Hornets' 26-7 scoring edge in second quarter.

4) John Lucas III is playing well with Chicago's summer league team; he is a point guard who has put up good numbers this week.

3) Amare Stoudemire was at the Knick-Detroit game Friday, did a stint on the MSG Network and then left. Lopez brothers were courtside for games on Wednesday, supporting former Stanford teammate Fields.

2) Miami is now the favorite to win the most games next NBA season, but really, they're an expansion team with Lebron/Wade/Bosh. To have the best team in the league, they need a lot more than that. Ilgauskus and Mike Miller are a start, but for them to be a betting favorite? Nope.

1) Safe to say no one has Louis Oosthuizen in our golf pool. Now that I look at it, no one has seven of top nine guys on the leaderboard.

Bettor's best friend: Saturday's wagering tips

Line off the board

Phillies at Cubs – The total for the game is not available due to the uncertainty of wind speed and direction at Wrigley Field. Early forecasts have the wind blowing out to center field at 11 mph.

Lines to keep an eye on

Nationals at Marlins – The home squad opened as hefty -230 favorites with Josh Johnson on the bump but a few markets have elevated that moneyline to -250.

Brewers at Braves – Atlanta was installed as a -190 home favorite in this contest but a few boards are offering as high as -215.

Weather report
(Forecasts are extracted from Weather.com the night before the game.)

Tigers at Indians – The National Weather Service projects a 16 mph wind to blow across the diamond from third to first. There is also a 30 percent chance of rain.

Brewers at Braves – A 50 percent chance of rain is called for.

Nationals at Marlins – The forecast calls for a 17 mph wind to blow in from right-center field.

Who’s hot

Going into Friday, the Giants had won three straight decisions.

Saskatchewan is 2-0 ATS this year and 5-0 ATS in its last five outings dating back to last season.

Minnesota (WNBA) is 6-2 ATS in its last eight games and 3-0 ATS in last three meetings versus Seattle.

Who’s not

As of Friday, the Reds had lost four games in a row.

Dallas (AFL) has dropped 10 consecutive games and is 2-8 ATS during the streak.

The Dream (WNBA) are just 1-6 ATS in their last seven games.

Key trend

8-0 – Tampa Bay record in Jeff Niemann’s last eight road starts. The Rays are +118 dogs in New York on Saturday.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

The Twins placed first baseman Justin Morneau on the 15-day disabled list and recalled righthander Jeff Manship. The move is retroactive to July 8; one day after Morneau suffered a concussion taking a knee to the head while sliding into second base. He worked out on an elliptical machine Thursday but experienced "fogginess." Morneau is hitting .345 with 18 homers and 56 RBIs this season.

Game of the day

Edmonton Eskimos at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-7, 56.5)

Notable quotable

“As far as Steinbrenner’s passing? Good. Trust me, if hell freezes over, he’ll be skating. He said I was an incompetent and I was bad for the game of baseball. Well, I’m not a convicted felon like George Steinbrenner, and he’ll take that to his grave.”

-- Former Red Sox pitcher Bill Lee said of George Steinbrenner’s passing during an interview with WMUR TV on Thursday.

Tips and notes

- Louis Oosthuizen’s five-stroke lead is the largest 36-hole margin at the Open Championship since Bobby Clampett held the same lead at Royal Troon in 1982. No PGA Tour player has held a five-stroke lead in an event since 2006 when Tiger Woods led by that amount at the WGC Championship. This season, the second-round leader/co-leader has gone on to win 10 of 28 events on the PGA circuit. When the British Open has been held at St. Andrews, the last four 36-hole leaders have gone on to win the major.

- Indians shortstop Jhonny Peralta was not in the starting lineup for Friday’s game because of a fever. And when illnesses start floating around clubhouses bettors should take caution. Making matters worse, Cleveland played a late game Friday and then has an early, 1:05 p.m. (ET) start Saturday which is the first leg of a doubleheader. The Tribe have lost six of their last seven games and if the fever spreads, they could be quite fatigued by Game 2 on Saturday.

- The world’s No. 3 golfer, Lee Westwood, is within striking distance at the British Open six shots off the lead but feels like he should be much closer. Westwood said after shooting 1-under on Friday, “I should really be 10-under at worst.” The Englishman has the tools to win a major, finishing just one shot out of the two-man playoff last year at Turnberry. Westwood made 17 pars and one birdie in challenging weather conditions at the Old Course Friday and is getting +500 odds to win the tournament.
