The son of former Notre Dame standout Joe Montana was among 11 Fighting Irish athletes arrested on misdemeanor charges of underage drinking at a party Friday night.

A total of 44 people were arrested after city police responded to a call about a fight near a roadway and discovered the party, said St. Joseph County Police assistant chief Bill Redman.

Two non-athletes face a misdemeanor charge of providing alcohol to minors. The arrests were handled by state excise police, who didn’t immediately return a message seeking comment on Saturday.

The most recognizable athletes arrested were Nate Montana, a walk-on who was the backup to starter Dayne Crist coming out of the spring, and Tim Abromaitis, the second leading scorer on the Irish basketball team at 16.1 points a game last season.

Montana spent last season as a backup at Pasadena City (Calif.) College. Several incoming freshmen are expected to compete with him for the No. 2 spot when practice begins next month.

The other athletes arrested were wide receivers Robby Toma and Tai-ler Jones, linebacker Steve Filer, kicker Nick Tausch, cornerback Lo Wood, and offensive linemen Chris Watt and Tate Nichols; incoming freshman point guard Eric Atkins; and incoming hockey goalie Steven Summerhays.

Most of those arrested had been released on $150 bond, Redman said. They are scheduled to make court appearances July 30.

If convicted, each faces a maximum sentence of 30 days in jail.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said he was aware of the arrests and was gathering information.

“If there is any team-related discipline to be issued, it would be handled internally,” he said.

Bernie Cafarelli, Notre Dame’s sports information director, said basketball coach Mike Brey also would handle any punishment internally.

Jimmy Claussen got a pass at ND. Basically the kids were easy targets for campus police who want to make a name for themselves. Could be any college.

This is ridiculous! Who gives a shit if some 19 and 20 year olds are drinking beer! You mean to tell me there is nothing going on in that town that the police could focus more attention on?
Of course Notre Dame will probably make several millions off these kids in TV rights but they can't drink a beer. I played college lacrosse and back in the 80's we were in the NCAA tourney and one of our games was televised against Salisbury. Kutztown University made a pretty penny and we all got 50 dollars for dinner. I'm still pissed!

Couldn't have said it better myself. This is normal for high school kids. College kids? More like an everyday thing

Cujo,

So you think you should have gotten more than $50? Were you on scholarship? Who paid for your uniforms? Coaches salaries? Hotels and travel expenses?

This is OT, but since you brought it up....I don't understand the "we should pay athletes" crowd. A D1 football teams gives out 85 scholarships. What do you think the cost of that is at a school like ND? Stanford? Vanderbilt? Miami? Northwestern? (All private schools) Plus coaches salaries, uniforms, travel expenses, home football game costs, etc.... If you pay athletes at D1 football schools you will have to pay all sports (ever heard of Title IX?). It ain't happenin'! If you pay the 85 scholarship players do you pay the walk-ons?

Your scholarship and opportunity for a free education is your pay. These kids who come from poor families also get Pell Grants and other forms of free grants and scholarships....

My Dad when going to IU was in a car accident while drunk where the driver died.

He says they would of been better off in a jail cell.

But if they are on campus not behind the wheel who are they hurting?

BTW he also tells how his tuition was 2k a year.

Granted this was many moons ago but wtf is it now 60k?

I have no tolerance for this shit - these kids are underage and drinking all while having a good time - they should be expelled and serve the max of 30 days - wtf is wrong with kids these days

I'd have to drink on the reg if I were stuck in South Bend.

Ever been there?
OOOF.
Uber-boring, I have a friend in nearby Millford Indiana, and flew into SB and Fort-Wayne often.
Fort Wayne, there is another happening city also. (sarcasm)
