"XXX advances to 2nd on defensive indifferance"

Does that mean the pitcher just peformed a BALK? I see that all the time in MLB gamecast and have no idea what it could be unless it is a BALK.

Just happened in the Rangers game.

Thanks

No balk...basically no one held the runner on 1st and no one covered 2nd base. Also called giving a runner 2nd base.

So its basically like a stolen base as in the base runner ran for second and no throw was made since no one was covering 2nd base?

I assume they only call it this in the 9th inning otherwise they would call it a stolen base correct?

doesn't count in the stats as a stolen base but basically the same thing.

usually only in the 9th with 2 outs when the pitcher if focused on retiring the batter for the win.

Doesn't have to be in the 9th. It can happen in the 7th or 8th if the game is a blowout too.

yes, that runner advancing into scoring position is considered meaningless because of no affect on the score (would not have tied the game). the defense is not worried about his run.
